    Really the only loss to this line-up is Nick Lidstrom, which is a huge loss and not replaced, but really you are never going to replace Lidstrom. As many in the front office have stated, Lidstrom's departure will need to be filled by other players stepping up.

    Hudler --> He is gone and replaced with Samuelsson, who is a Right Handed Shot for the PP point and was on pace for 47 points despite the injury. Sammy has similar offensive potential to Hudler and he is better defensively and a much better skater. Additionally he is a Righty, which our line-up is lacking.

    Holmstrom --> Replaced by Tootoo...At this point in his career Homer is a novelty player for the PP and a liability 5 on 5. Tootoo will be a solid Dallas Drake like presence that the Wings have lacked since they won the cup. Homers net front presence has been replaced by Franzen, Cleary, Bertuzzi, etc. on the PP already. Nobody does it quite like Holmstrom, but I think Tootoo is a better use of that roster spot.

    No other losses occurred up front but the Wings still add Brunner or Nyquist or both to the line-up moving Emmerton/Mursak out of the line-up. If either Brunner or Nyquist hits and has a decent rookie season, that is a huge addition to the Wings line-up offensively.

    Thus the case can be made that the Wings are an equal if not better team up front.

    On the point: The Wings acquired Quincey as a 2-fold move last year. To make a cup run and to replace Stuart if he leaves. So Quincey is Stuart's replacement. Lidstrom is gone...He is not replaceable. Suter or Weber would have been nice, but it was never a guarantee we would get either. So our Defensive circumstance has a lot to do with a poor FA market the year Lids retired.

    Hopefully guys like Kronwall, Ericsson and Quincey can step up and hopefully Smith is as good as we all hope.

    Looking Forward:

    Many teams have spent up to the current cap now. When the CBA is resolved many of those teams will need to ditch cap space, and they will not want to lose guys for nothing, though they will not have the negotiating strength they have now when teams know they need to move money...So I guess my whole point is, I am comfortable with this team that it is a playoff team. When the cap issue is resolved I bet Holland can grab a decent D-Man to supplement the depth when it comes time for teams to move money.

    This is an odd off-season, I will not judge until October starts. (Or Later if there is a delay)

    ...And if Nashville doesn't match, the Pred's top defense pairing is... Someguy and Someotherguy.

    And we whine about Holland. Imagine how we'd howl about Poile if we were Preds fans.

    *Just for the record- had to look it up- if the Preds don't match/sign Weber, their D consists of Gill, Blum, Ellis, Josi, and Klein.

    Ellis and Josi are solid young D-Men, Klein is a good Top 4 Penalty Killer as is Gill. other than their top pair problem (Which ours is just as bad) they have a pretty solid Defense. Better than ours possibly.

    We all know that Preds will match this offer sheet, so that is not the point. But Weber would easily be worth 4 first round picks in my opinion. It is not like the Red Wings have a fantastic draft record for defensemen taken in the first round the past 20 years -and it is not like they aren't trying. Detroit used 8 of 10 possible picks on defensemen and traded ten 1st picks (in 97, 99, 01, 02, 03, 04, 06, 09, 11 and 12). The exceptions are McCollum in 08 and Sheahan in 10.

    1993 Anders Eriksson

    1994 Yan Golubovsky

    1995 Maxim Kuznetsov

    1996 Jesse Wallin

    1998 Jiri Fischer

    2000 Niklas Kronwall

    2005 Jakub Kindl

    2007 Brendan Smith

    Kronwall is a top pair d-man and Fischer likely would have been had he been able to continue playing. Smith still could be. I'd say with the little 1st rd picks (All being High 1st rounders) we've done a pretty good job.

    Wings say that they stood pat because price for depth forward was too high per Ansar Kahn.

    It isn't like Kenny sat there claiming he didn't need anything. He actively shopped and decided that the price for a depth forward wasn't worth it.

    Keep in mind Jurco, Tatar, Nyquist, Jarnkrok, Tatar all came in the 2nd round of the draft. So that pick is one Detroit has had much success with in terms of bringing in prospects that we all expect to make an impact on this team.

    So not wanting to trade mulitple seconds or a second consecutive year of a 1st for a depth forward is nothing I fault KH on.

    So why keep all the cap space for? Why trade Commodore for nothing?

    Kenny messed up this deadline. Sorry folks, say whatever you want, standing pat is a mistake.

    Do I wish he had added some depth at forward. Yes I do.

    But to say he stood pat and messed up the deadline...no. He got Quincey in to help for this season as well as long term. I think he did pretty well.

    This deadline is enough to bring me out of the shadows.....

    Ken Holland has got to be the luckiest GM in the NHL. Don't flame it before you read on. Hakan Andersson is the scout who found the core of the late draft steals--Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Datsyuk, Franzen, Zetterberg, etc.

    With arguably the greatest defenseman of all-time, Ken has been content to just let years slide away. So what if the asking price for Parenteau is a 1st. Oh no! Hold onto that so we can get another Jakub Kindl! Hey, maybe we can grab a guy that Kenny waived for a first....is Matt Ellis on the block?

    Last I checked, Mike Illitch paid the bills and the players played. Ken Holland has been more of a hindrance to this dynasty than an asset.

    That said, if he pulls off a deal for a 3rd liner, I take this all back.

    When the 2012 1st rounder was already traded can you fault KH for not wanting to trade 2 years of 1st overalls in a row which hurts his bargain chips in the future as well. Its not like he sat on the pick. The 2012 1st round pick is already in TB...

    Also the rumor on Parenteau was a 1st rounder and a prospect, not just a 1st rounder.

    No one is saying that. What people like myself and others are saying, is that we have some needs, we have cap space and assets and there are deals to be made. I don't want Kenny to trade our 2013 1st rounder for Paul Gaustad. Would be I excited if the deal was Emmerton+3rd for Gaustad? Sure would. Or a similar deal for a David Jones type? Also yes.

    The trade deadline is more about the cheeky moves, the smaller ones, that pay big dividends.

    That said the asking price for Gaustad was rumored to be a 1st rounder and never said to be any less.

    I regret not getting Pahlsson since 2 4th rounders is practically nothing. But just because Pahlsson went for that doesn't mean Regier will lower his asking price. You can lament missing Pahlsson for 2 4ths but without knowing what COL or BUF were willing to settle on for Jones or Gaustad you cannot say he missed the boat. Colorado and Buffalo may have had set requests they wouldn't budge on.

    I thought the Wings D was solid before that trade. Wings D > Wings offense. That is the problem when the only offense is coming from your 3rd line your team has issues. This team desperately needs scoring. 6 shots on net in the first period against the Avs is pretty embarrassing.

    What players traded today really do much for offense though. Jeff Carter, Steve Downie, Andrei Kostitsyn were the only top 6 guys traded. The rest of the forwards moved would fill the bottom 6. Its not like the Wings are missing out on tons of scoring forwards that have been moved.

    How are those desperate moves? They paid decent prices on this kind of day, things we could've done. Fact is, teams were competing with are filling there needs going forward and as of now, we haven't. There's still lots of time, but those moves are good for the Canucks and Sharks, and that is bad for us.

    I thought a physical D-man who could play the PK was a pretty big need. That is filled by a 26 year old 6'2" 207 lbs defenseman who wasn't on Detroit a week ago...
