Right Now Is This Year's Team Better Than Last Year's?
Icteria virens replied to Sleight's topic in General
better, although we have a tough first round match-up. Am I the only one thinking it would be better for Nashville and Dallas to win their series b/c we seem to play better against them? We don't play well on the west coast or in western Canada although it's hard not to vote against Nashville. We also wouldn't be flying across as many time zones. -
good post, right on IMO. By his shear rep. of being a poor man's Brett Hull he needs to say controversial things that he most likely doesn't always mean fully. Let's hope we stick up for our teammates, I have to feel it's going to be different this year.

Chris Chelios has played almost 3 full seasons of PO hockey in his career. Amazing
-
Am I the only one feeling like they're gonna run our goalie, b/c a. it's worked in the past b. they feel it'll work versue Hasek's temper c. that Hasek may not get the call b/c of his rep. for diving? I hope if this happens we STAND UP and do something aboot it!!!!! Let's go Red Wings!

that was an off-colour joke, or an off-color joke??
-
that's just the point, at least you have the option of seeing a game on NBC, Americans don't reg. get the CBC, plus the game WILL be broadcast on CBC in the afternoon.
-
does anybody know the percentage of corp. seats to reg. seats during the PO's as opposed to the reg season? I would hope there are less corp. seats available or bought. I wonder if the season ticket holders who've turned down tickets are the corp. type?

that's an EXCELLENT point, they have the ability to get US network channels on digital cable and we can't do the same.(ok, if I go to Windsor and buy a CDN sat.dish perhaps but you get the picture) it's far more easy for them to get US television, my only chance of seeing HNIC is to get expensive NHL center ice. I'm a little surprised the CBC didn't have some game picking as part of the rights contract.i.e. they get first choice of 7.00pm starts, second choice of 3.00pm starts whereby NBC might have first choice of 3.00pm starts etc. that's the way it works in Europe re: soccer t.v. rights.

champagne from the cup!!!!

great job, hockey names are the best! this thread is so funny I might have to Haaken up a Loob

who on the red wings over the last 4 years has really done much of anything offensevly in the PO's? The only one I can think of is Robert Lang and we all know he's lazy and he sucks.
-
not only that but the whole scouting staff, North America and Europe, the Wings have always been proactive in Euro scouting and that's helped us tremendously over the last 15 years. p.s. regarding your avatar: Go Arsenal

not to mention that during the last 3 cup winning seasons we only won the Pres trophy once so it's not vital to our success. The most important thing is to be playing well going into the PO's. but all they really have to do is win one at the Joe and there goes home ice. They could give up 7 or 14 goals or win by 1 it doesn't matter. I don't believe it weighs more on their shoulders as home ice hasn't mattered much in the NHL over the last 10 years. If anything they'd have the psychological advantage knowing the history. All it would take is for them to steal one game and there goes the President's Trophy advantage. it's one thing to look at the reg. season and then another to look at a 7 game series, the two are different. We're "grittier" than in the past and that's a good thing but I have my reservations about Cal-gar-y. I'd much rather play Colorado.
-
I strongly disagree. I've always seen him backcheck and be responsible defensively no mater what the circumstance. Does anybody remember when we played the Left Wing Lock and all the lines would play the sytem perfectly except the Larionov line? Igor would always be the "lock" on his line b/c Russian centers were taught to be responsible defensively and hold back. He was used to this and would allow his LW to stay up after talking about this with the coaching staff. I've seen this same style many times from Datsyuk. Kind of funny but when a lockerroom full of your teammates see you having fluid drained from your thigh so that you can play in the PO's you get respect, even if you don't go out and score a goal but a bunch of ppl sitting behind computer screens can mock you all day. Interesting.

did we manage to win a game all year at Calgary? We just played them on 3/20 and lost 2-1 @ Cal. I hope we can be more physical against them but I'd rather play Colorado.
-
I'm not sure where all the confindence re: Calgary comes from. We just played them on 3/20 and lost, I don't recall us winning a game at Calgary all season. Teams employ different strategies against certain teams and although we match up better with the grittier style this year I'm cautiously optomistic that we'll get through. The thing about the PO's is that it's different b/c it's a 7 game series. If we get the #1 seed I'd much rather have Colorado win the 8th spot simply because we seem to match up better against them.

Rankings: how teams have retired numbers.
Icteria virens replied to redwinger4747's topic in General
Stevie said himself that when he first recieved the 'C' he needed to grow into the role, that there were many leaders on the team and he hadn't found his voice. Maybe this is just typical humble Steve but I'm not sure. I'm NOT trying to diminish his captaincy at all but it'd be like if we gave the C to Zata now instead of down the road like many of us predict (after Lids retires and we sign Zata to a long term deal), Zata would have had to grow into the role right now a bit, don't you think? Perhaps the same situation was apparent before Delvecchio's reign? -
for most of us it's the constant chanting that we suck, they spend more time jeering "red wings suck" than they do cheering their own team. All this from a franchise that's done nothing in the league. They are right though, Detroit does suck... champagne from the Stanley Cup.
-
if it's just between russia and canada who here in the us would show it? I'd like to see it but I'm not sure it'd be televised.
-
at least they are showing more hockey next year (just trying to be positive) I think part of the reason they've extended is b/c it's a good deal for NBC, they didn't pay for rights like a broadcaster traditionally would , the deal was contingent on NBC making a profit and meeting certain economic goals, there was basically no risk for NBC but then again the league was kind of desperate.
-
I"m wondering why they couldn't show some games on USA network, which they own, kind of like they did during the Olympics? This would make if more accessable to more ppl in the US. Good that they'll have hockey on all season instead of just after the NFL season.

Fedoruk thinks "tough guys" should wear extra gloves
Icteria virens replied to Wings_Toledo's topic in General
exactly, of course players have gotten bigger over the years but there is a natural limit to it, Ivan Drago was, afterall, just a myth. The real point is why was this article of all the hockey articles published every day on the NHL's website. Here's a great "dumb jock" quote that the soccer-mom NHL loves "I think if fighting was banned the NHL would like what the all-star game looked like this year," he said. "Back and forth, goal after goal, nice play after nice play ... You going to watch that for 60 minutes? It gets a little boring."
