Not sure what the big deal is. Actually, I probably do. I think some of the reaction here is because he was talking about Ovechkin. I do think there is a bit of Ovechkin can do no wrong with a lot of people on here. His over the board celebrations don't bother me that much, it annoys me a little, but I certainly don't make too much of it. I will admit, when he does it scoring a 5-0 goal, it annoys me a little more. Whoever mentioned that Stevie celebrated quite a bit after scoring in 2OT, well, I think that's a little different. Ovechkin has never scored a goal in that situation....let's not forget that this was a goal that won a playoff series instantly. Anyway, do I have a huge problem with it...not really, but I know there are quite a few that do, so I'm not sure what the big deal is about Cherry's comments. I must admit though, I didn't see Coach's corner tonight, so I may not have fully appreciated the comments.

I think it's because the hit wasn't all that bad, might not have been a suspension for someone else. It's a suspension because he simply went for the hit, not the puck...on an icing.

Hasek was great, no doubt, but to think he always knew exactly what he was doing and wasn't at all lucky is pretty far fetched. I'm not saying that he was anymore lucky than any other goalie, but there was certainly some luck in there (a la saves like we just saw Turco make).....the same luck that any other goalie gets now and then.

You cannot make this comparison, it is not fair at all. The only reason they have similar games played is because Luongo was injured for almost half the season. Luongo's games played are night in night out. Conklin gets the benefit of being able to rest and prepare for each and every games he plays. Not all goalies are cut out to start basically every game.
-
If this is the case, then I think only about 30% of Hasek's career saves were actual "saves"

I know these are supposed to be top 10 in recent memory, but they did go back quite a ways, so I'm not sure how that is the top 10. The Savard goal has been my all time favortie for awhile...the replay there didn't even show the whole time he held on to the puck. Bure has some great goals that are better than some of these. Crosby's goal was nice, but no business on this list....he scored a handful of goals himself better than that one.
-
I agree, nowhere near #1 in my opinion. I didn't watch the list recently, but when I first saw it, I think #6, #5 and #3 were better, probably others as well. They seem to have a bias towards guys falling down and still scoring. Personally, I prefer "cleaner" goals. Regarding the Ovechkin goal, it wouldn't even be in my top 10 if it wasn't for the move in the neutral zone.

You seriously thought that was a good showing by Hossa?

Not sure about production actually suffering, but I would certainly not expect points per minute to be the same, which is why I always laugh when people throw those stats around. A person will not automatically double their points if you doubled their ice-time, it simply doesn't work that way. That said, if Hulder is getting 1 ppg playing 12 min per game, I certainly wouldn't expect him to get less than 1ppg if you increase his ice time to 20 min per game.

Fleury on Blake on Saturday was pretty good too.

Why are we so obsessed with what the media has to say about the Pens? Seriously? If it was any other team, who had just fired their coach the day before, that team and that game would be a headline as well.....but no one here would say a word about it because there is nothing in it for them, there is nobody like Crosby that could take a chance at bashing...etc., etc. It's also now come down to people bashing Crosby because he's not really scoring much...even though he is top 3 in the league? What is wrong with you people? We get it, a lot of people here don't like the guy, but it's really getting annoying to see thread after thread complaining about him and the Pens.....on a Wings board. I know, I know, if I don't like it, don't read it, but it's hard to ignore when the threads are all clogging up the front page. Oh....here's a good FYI as well, the Pens game was in the afternoon yesterday, so their game finished before any other games even started last night, so for awhile, there was nothing else to write about....did anyone even stop for half a second to give that some thought?

Pretty sure it would be the average of the 3 years in your example. Shouldn't make a difference whether they played in the AHL in prior years or not, the cap hit should always be the average yearly salary of your contract. Edit: if you are worrying about the small details of these types of contracts, you are probably putting yourself too close to the cap anyway (i.e. no wiggle room for injuries, etc.). Also, presumably you are trying to figure something out for 2009, which we do not know what the cap will be.

I alwasy thought Crosby looks like the guy from Smallville
-
This makes zero sense for the Wings. Why on earth would they trade for Smith when he comes with a $2.2 million cap hit for the next two years....this would just cause them to have to dump more salary to re-sign the players they want to keep. It might be able to work for this year, but seems to make little sense to me post 2009.
-
I'm basing this post on reading the title of the thread only, so pardon my ignorance for points that might have already been made in the 4 pages of replies (seriously, what is there to discuss here?) I'm being 100% honest here when I say "I think I have just as good of a chance at getting my number sent to the rafters as any of the players mentioned"

Hossa signed for a small discount, probably $0.5-1 million range, but it's not a very good comparison at all, seeing as it was only a one year deal and also due to the point in his career. That said, he's probably a better example than most. It will be interesting to see what Hossa signs as his next contract. To stay a Wing, he'll need to take a discount, but I doubt it would be that signficant, getting his cap hit down might be accomplished similar to a Zetterberg type contract, in which case, I wouldn't really see it as a discount and I'm now starting to wonder if the Wings would really do that.....committ to such a long term contract to a guy that's only been here for half a year so far....but he's got a good track record, so they just might do it.
-
The Wings looking to trade a mid-paid player makes perfect sense, but only if they are doing it to dump some salary, or only get a player back who will be an UFA at year's end. They will need to dump some salary if they are serious about singing Hossa.
-
What you are referring to is probably, "being caught flat-footed" - which means you are caught standing still, feet are not moving, flat on the ice, etc. When a player you are trying to beat to puck or who you are trying to defend against is moving their feet and coming with speed, you can't simply turn and catch up, you need to be moving your feet as well.
-
Ummm, Crosby has already done that, he took $1-1.5 million less than he could have gotten. I don't even think the Wings have many examples of players taking that type of a discount even in later stages of their career. For example, some may look at Zetterberg's contract and suggest he could be getting $8 million, therefore, he took close to a $1.9 million discount, but I don't see that at all due to the crazy long contract he signed to get the cap hit down. The only real close example I can think of is Lidstrom....but going back to my original point, he's at the other end of his career.
-
Still waiting for just one example....can't be that difficult can it?
-
Okay, I just typed a long reply to this absurd, BS post, but I wasn't logged in properly. I'll keep this version short. Please provide me with a single, just one, example of a Wing, scratch that, any player in league history that signed for about $1-1.5 million less than he could of when they were a similar situation to Crosby. Not only did he take a discount, he's getting blamed for taking too much now? I thought the bashing of Crosby on here was somewhat funny, but this is getting a little weird.
-
Ummm, he's 23, what the hell are you talking about? A lot of defenseman have trouble even getting into the line up that young. Did you forget the 18 goals and 56 pts he put on the board last year? Seriously.
-
Green has another 2 goals and is +3 so far tonight.....I think that puts him at 21 goals (way ahead of 2nd place defenseman) and 47pts (also 1st) and his +24 would tie him for 3rd.
-
Try crunching the numbers. Hossa at $6 million means the Wings need to lose a lot more than just Franzen.
-
Help me understand why Hudler only gets $1.5 million? He'll likely put up 60+ points this year and if so, would be a fool to sign for that amount. I understand players would want to take less to play in Detroit, but not when your salary is that low and when this is really his chance to earn some money. Him taking less and Hossa taking less or completely different situations. Also, I think it would be a pretty big mistake to only carry 12 forwards on the roster. At that cap hit, you are really leaving no room to account for injuries and the need to call any players up.
