I'm guessing he gets traded after the playoffs

News From Around the NHL *Mod warning page 75*

My philosophy is that the fans pay everyone's paycheck.....they bought tickets, they have the right to boo. -
Being groomed in the system for a LONG time doesn't mean you deserve higher picks.....teams have to want said players enough to give up more for them. They weren't valuable enough to get more than they got.

Gustav Nyquist traded to Sharks for 2019 Second Round pick and 2020 3rd round conditional pick.

In the world of professional sports...yes, it is that long ago. In fact, longer than the average NHLer's entire career. -
Oh, I get that, just thought it is hefty for a guy they only have for the rest of the season. Perhaps they worked out an extension, perhaps they feel he puts them over the top this year, or perhaps that’s the price tag for this type of player, even though a UFA

What am I missing on the Kevin Hayes trade? Why was return so high? I know the first rounder will be a late first rounder, but seems like a lot to give up for Hayes. Did he sign extension?

Honestly, more than I was expecting. I figured 2nd rounder at best. I get that a 3rd rounder doesn’t have good odds at amounting to much, but it’s still more than I thought they’d get. -
Echo this comment. Suggesting Nyquist is a better player is debatable, suggesting he's much better? No way. Combine the other factors already noted, age, term, center, size.....I don't see Nyquist getting the same return, but could be wrong. What is going in the other direction on this deal?

Steve Yzerman to step down as GM for TBL. Will serve in "Advisory Role".

But what is a "successful strategy"? What is a "bad one"? There isn't "one" right strategy. Several different ways to win games. -
If it was me, I'd had giving up a 1st to get a player that is a UFA in 2 months, but teams do it sometimes. There is value in having that brief time to try and work out a longer term deal with the player and have time to see if that is something you want as well. The other route is to agree to extension at time of trade as well.
-
I'm sure I'm missreading this, but are you suggesting Nyquist would be worth more to a team trying to trade for him than Stone or Duchene? Maybe you are referring to cap hit, but all are UFA's. Both Stone and Duchene are quite a bit better than Nyquist and they are both younger as well.

BEST view of a hockey brawl ever (NSFW language)

Interesting....I was going to say that I used to watch a ton of games with these teams participating. I knew lots of guys that play for both of these teams and other teams in the AUS. Games were never that crazy like this, but now I see it is something out of the ordinary that sparked it. Junior games are normally more rough, whether it's Major Junior, Junior A or Junior B (or at least used to be). -
Just for fun where are we at the All Star break

I totally get that it's a negotiation and he's giving that out in return for something, but I think it's completely fair to criticize how often he gives these out, especially considering that it doesn't appear that he's getting value in return. For example, there are several cases when I see him sign someone that I think the cap hit is too high...ok, maybe it's a shorter term...no......term looks too long as well.....then on top of that, he gives the NTC as well. -

Ummm....there are something like 9 or 10 players on the team with NTC's and a lot of those contracts are for longer terms and for more money than most would like, so I'm not sure what you are suggesting makes sense. Edit: I checked just to see if Detroit truly had more than most teams and they certainly do. - 22 teams have 6 or less - 4 teams have 7 (1 is ARI though, so I wouldn't count them as they picked up those contracts to get to cap floor, aren't really paying anything...5 of the 7 are on IR) - 2 teams have 8 - CHI has 9 - DET and TBL have 10 -

Wings have 45 points, not 43 and 17 ROW, not 16. -
Pretty sure this nothing to do with Torts, he was simply being asked because he’s the coach and the guy that would comment on lineup for upcoming game

Not sure what you mean

Concussion are scary. I see Hornqvist on PIT is concussed again....not sure how many times he's been out with a concussion, but it seems like a lot.
-
With Philly, its mostly goaltending, but also some underperformance / lack of depth. With LA, it's mostly age and bad goaltending.

Perhaps it's just how I look at what makes a player "Elite", but I fundamentally have a problem with your statement. You're either elite or your not. If you need certain players to play with to boost your stats, then you are not elite in my mind. Doesn't mean Larkin won't get to elite status, but if he gets there in my mind, it will be regardless of who he plays with.

My position on Green was to not have him back. Do I think he's the best Dman when healthy, yes? I think he makes the team better, but I didn't think it made sense to have him back because the team isn't good enough to go anywhere, what's the point of keeping him? He won't be around when we project the team to be good enough, so it didn't make much sense to me.

Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but I thought the voting was for captains only and it took place in December.
-
He's currently 61st in the league in PPG, so be careful at looking his projected point totals in isolation.
-
Not sure if anyone has ever done an analysis on it, but I'm sure size has nothing to do with it as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see more big guys though, because I'm guessing those guys are expected to play more physical, so put themselves in that position more often, even in initiating contact themselves. Scott Stevens, while true, retired ultimately due to post-concussion syndrome, probably misleading to suggest his career was cut short.....he played until he was 40 and has played more games than any other defenseman in the history of the NHL (8th overall).

I can't remember the rules with the latest CBA, but with the last one, if the player was under 35 when signing the contract, player and team could walk away from the contract and not have cap implications (i.e. it went away). This protected from a team signing a 35 year old to an 8 year deal to lower the cap, knowing he wouldn't play the full 8 years.
