LIdstrom sells 2.9 Million dollar home

Report suggested it sold for less than the $2.9 million value after being on the market for 21 days.

    Most overrated player.

Yes, that's true, after this summer. Before that, not really.

    Most overrated player.

I think Lucic is overrated. He's a great player, no doubt and I would love to have him on the team......but I hear so many gush about him like he's a god. I disagree on the Ovechkin thing, I think maybe in the past because he was pretty one-dimensional, but a lot of guys are down on him lately, for good reason (the ratings are probably going too far in the other direction now). What I find is that a certain player may have a great season or post-season (happens a lot when a team goes deep into the playoffs....there is a guy that sticks out big time). They get so much hype for that period of time, but then never really live up to it. Franzen is a good example of a guy that has had some good spurts (especially in playoffs), but has never really blossomed beyond that. Then again, maybe he's not getting that much hype either, so no biggie.

    winter classic question...

Why would you think anything would be impacted beyond the NHL? Original question....if the NHL is not operating, the Alumni game at the WC won't be happening.

    New Commissioner?

The counter to that is that it is very difficult to negotiate something unless you are really up against a dealine...a real deadline. Also, it's tough to do during the season as well anyway for obvious reasons.

    2012 Lockout Watch

Safe to say not much of that has truth to it....considering some of it isn't even legally possible (i.e. lockout before Sep. 15th). No more negotiations? Ummm, they are negotiating today.

Taylor Hall gets $42m 7 year deal with Oilers

He's also never been in this situation (extending a 1st overall draft pick). They are definately paying for some potential here and there is some risk, especially due to health.

Datsyuk leaving after contract is up?

I think people may read too much into the article. I see it simply as saying that he'll be 36 at the end of his current contract and we are not sure whether he'll stay or not. Since he'll be 36, there is a real chance he'll choose to leave, there aren't a ton of guys that stick around to 40 and it would be unrealistic to think he will. Not saying he won't, but he'd be one of the rare players in history that do, if he does. I think very few people realize how rare it actually is to have players stick around to 40 in the NHL.

    2012 Lockout Watch

Actually, if there is a lockout, Bettman and the owners would be 100% responsible. The same would be said about the players if there was a strike, they'd be 100% responsbile. Funny thing is, a lot of people don't necessarily see the difference between the two. I know that's not where you are coming from, you are seeing it as two sides needing to come to an agreement or there will be no hockey come October. Therefore, if there is no hockey...both sides to blame. There is some truth to that, but to be perfectly accurate, the players are willing to start the season as usual and continue to negotiate and reach a deal. There is no reason they can't continue to operate under the existing deal until a new one is reached. The thing is, the owners have said, they have no interest in starting the season under the existing deal, therefore, they will lockout the players if there is no agreement by September 15th. It's really a negotiation tool, if they don't lockout the players, they don't hold a lot of power to get a good deal done for them. If the owners don't lockout the players (which Bettman already said they would), the players could choose to strike, but that wouldnt' happen.

    2012 Lockout Watch

Agreed. It would be silly to suggest the players or owners are not greedy. To be successful, you probably need to develop some form of greed. But it is clear the owners are looking for more money, I don't see that yet from the players. In fact, didn't their proposal reduce the amount of money currently coming their way? They are just trying to keep as much money as possible. They aren't trying to get more. I have no problem with professional athletes making as much as they do. There are very, very, very few people in the world capable of doing what the do. If you look at almost any other profession, the very top people in their field are making millions. Fact is, the players generate billions in revenues, therefore, they should get a good chunk of that money....question is, how much? I think the system needs to change. The current proposal from the league is fine, it will help the struggling franchises, but what happens when revenues increase dramatically again (largely driven by the good market teams)....increasing the cap floor again and putting those teams in trouble. The problem with the linkage to league revenues is that it assumes as league revenues grow, each teams' revenues grow at the same rate....which is definately not true. Some might say the solution to that would be to eliminate the floor, but that has 2 problems: 1) players won't like it because less money for them, but more importantly, 2) removes partity which the league was trying to get to as well. The only solution that makes sense to me is revenue sharing, anything other solution that would help the smaller market teams would simply mean large chunks of money would come out of the players pockets and going into the pockets of the rich teams. The richest teams in the league are much richer these days than they were 7 years ago, becuase their revenues grew a lot. The poor teams are in the same spot they were 7 years ago because the league revenues grew dramatically, but their didn't. If revenue was shared, there wouldn't be this problem.

IF there is a lockout, where will our players likely end up?

Hard to say. If there is a lockout, do you jump the gun and go play somewhere or do you wait, thinking the lockout will end sooner rather than later. The other thing to think about is that guys like Datsyuk and Zetterberg are older now. They were in their mid-late 20's the last time, but being older now, would they prefer the rest? Or is it more important to play in order to stay in shape....if they don't play, might be harder to get in shape than younger guys.

    2012 Lockout Watch

Yes, he does a lot and has a lot of control, but that can easily be taken away if the owners are not happy with the job he is doing. He's like the president of a corporation....if the Board doesn't like the direction the president is taking, he will be fired by the Board. Bettman doesn't have the ultimate control over things, the board of govenors do. They are happy with him and what he is doing, that's why he is around and being compensated nicely. As soon as the owners feel he is damaging their product or doing something they don't like, he's gone. It's pretty simple.

claude giroux had 2 wrist surgeries this off season

Yes, the game he guaranteed a win was game 6, same game he scored the hattrick. They went to win game 7 to move to the finals where they beat Vancouver.

    Your thoughts on Sergei Fedorov

To me, there is no question - Hall of Famer - Yes, # retired in Detroit - No Hall of Fame? How many forwards in the HOF with less than 500 goals and 1,200 points? Quite a few actually. Ask yourself this: how many players that have very close to 500 goals and very close to 1,200 points + Hart + Pearson + 2 Selkes + 3 Cups aren't in the Hall? I'm guessing you won't find any at all. Add to that.....he's the all time leading scorer for Russian born players (healthy enough lead right now). Only 4 US born players have scored more points and his ppg stat is better than all 4 I think. # Retirement? I think he had all the potential to one day end up with his number retired by the Wings, but no chance now, not after he left in 2003. You can make very good arguments as to why he should have his number retired and they would likely all be valid arguments, but there is no pre-determined formula for number retirements that all teams follow. It is a personal preference by each team's ownership and managment and based on the precedent set with Detroit to date, no one would fit their criteria except Lidstrom (Yzerman is already there). I don't see any other potentials at this point. Some might suggest Datsyuk or Zetterberg might get there, but I don't see that happening at all. There is no rule prohibiting a goalie from becoming a captain. What you suggest is logical though, you normally wouldn't have a goalie as captain because of the the big on ice responsibilities of the captain is communication with officials...which requires moving around the ice quite a bit. No rule though....Luongo comes to mind as a goalie who has recently served as team captain.

claude giroux had 2 wrist surgeries this off season

It's almost commical how the article about Giroux turns into a Crosby bashing thread. I'd be willing to bet my live savings on this board overflowing with people commenting about Crosby being a whiny ***** if Giroux's name was replaced with Crosby's and Crosby's name was replaced with player "X".......i.e. Crosby whining about another playing slashing him or something.

    NHL Investigation

The most interesting part I took from the article is the suggestion that they are investigating everything, including whether it is possible for the clock to stop like that. I took from that.... a suggestion that they are considering the possibility that the timekeeper paused the clock purposely to allow the Kings some extra time to get that goal. I haven't heard any such allegations, I'm just making my own assumption here on the possibility. TSN Edit..I messed up my edit, hopefully this doesn't appear twice. The funniest thing is that even if Columbus wins their next 32 straight games, they probably still miss the playoffs. If the Kings make it in by 1pt, that will be interesting.

Predators match offer sheet to Shea Weber

If Weber truly wanted out of Nashville, you would have to think he wouldn't have signed a 14-year offer sheet with another team. Rationale being that it woudl be close to 100% that Nashville woudl match and he'd then have a 14 year contract with Nashville (doens't mean he's stuck there for 14 years, but you know....). If Weber thought he'd be getting out of Nashville by signing an offer sheet, he got bad advice. From everything I've heard though, he has no issues with Nashville.

    Bouwmeester opinions? Potential trades? *merged*

If you talk to people in Calgary, they'll tell you that he just had an MVP worthy season this past year. Stats may not have been great, but without the way he played, Calgary would have been near the bottom of the standings.
  20. I think the general consensus is that he's getting the $52M or 56M, whatever the bonus money is regardless (i.e. no way it could be reduced via rollback, etc.), but I'm guessing it is theoretically possible that something is negotiated in the new CBA such that those bonus amounts could be reduced. Anything is possible of both sides agree to it I would assume.
  21. It's probably possible, but the Flyers would have to continuing paying him for the next 5 years if he's kept on the active roster. I fully expect Nashville to match though, so it probably doens't matter.

Sal Galatioto Predicts NHL Cap & Floor Dropping

I guess we are probably looking at it differently. I don't necessarily see revenue sharing as a "fix" to a temporary issue for which the smaller market team will come out of. I see it more of a permanant thing whereby teams share revenue since overall revenues are driven by the league, not necessarily individual teams. I'm not suggesting you take all the revenues and divide it evenly amongst all the teams in the league (though I'm sure there are people out there that might suggest that), I just think there shoudl be sharing of revenues that are not necessarily team specific. A team can't make money if they aren't playing another team. To use an extreme example, if the league was made up of 2 teams and they just played each other all the time and the only revenues being generated were from the gate, if one team was in a different geographic region, different economic factors, etc., they might be bringing in significantly more revenue than the other team. In that model, it would make sense for one team to be bringing in more money, but it wouldn't make sense if there was an enormous disparity between the two. Look, I think the ultimate solution is to get rid of the teams in struggling markets, but I think we need to forget about that, it is not an available option.

Sal Galatioto Predicts NHL Cap & Floor Dropping

Won't make the players very happy at all, for every team that is eliminated, there would be "x" number of players out of a job. I think revenue sharing needs to exist to some exit. I agree with the notion that if a market simply isn't working, you need to deal with it (move to a better market), but I think sharing needs to exist because the generation of revenues by each individual team are not solely do to their individual efforts. I think elimination of franchises is the absolute last resort and would be avoided at all costs (both sides, players and owners, probably agree with that).

Sal Galatioto Predicts NHL Cap & Floor Dropping

I think the biggest issue is that the floor has increased so much. My guess from your comments are that you don't understanding why their needs to be a rollback because revenues have obviously increased dramatically, that's why the cap has gone up, what's the problem? Well, revenues have gone up signficantly, but those revenues are being generated by the rich teams. The current system simply caused the rich teams to get richer (i.e. profits have increased because player salaries have gone down). The poorer teams are really struggling now to afford paying our salaries to get to the floor. I'm not sure what the best solution is though as rolling salaries back and reducing the % that players will get to 50% of league revenues let's say will help a bit, but at league revenues grow (because of the rich teams bringing in all the revenues, the poorer teams are still going to struggle as the floor keeps riding up. I think it would be tough to not raise the floor as you would then lose competitiveness as some teams would be spending WAY MORE than others (as it used to be). I think the only logical solution is to add in some form of revenue sharing (I think they already have something, but it needs to be more signficant). Some will argue that rich teams shoudln't have to support poor teams, but the counter to that is that the teams are earning money off the league, not simply their own operations, therefore, those league revenues should be shared in some way.

Sal Galatioto Predicts NHL Cap & Floor Dropping

I don't see what the big deal is. If the cap drops, player salaries will drop accordingly, there should be no issues with having to drop players to get under the cap. It is completely different than last time. Last time around, player salaries were cut by 24% (existing contracts) and yes, some teams had to cut players to get under the cap, but that is because they were operating under a pre-cap world and they may have been paying way over the cap in salaries. Going from one cap world to another shouldn't not impact anything, reduction in salaries across the board should take care of any issues. How would it screw over the GMs? The players agreed to a 24% rollback last time and players salaries are a lot higher now then they were pre-rollback, so a small rollback doesn't seem completely illogical.
