Devils fined and have 2 draft picks taken

I don't understand, they did break the rules, they tried to circumvent the cap, which is against the rules of the CBA. There is no black and white rules regarding length of contract, etc., but lawyers will always find loopholes, etc., which is why the general rule regarding circumvention was added. It's not black and white because it can't be. You can close the Kovy contract issue with a black and white rule, but another lawyer will come up with another way.
  2. Who knows.....at least Hossa didn't go to the Flyers, but I'm not sure what's worse since the Hossa situation was completely different. I'm sure most Pens fans would be more upset with Hossa leaving than Guerin. I think they are just waiting for an elite winger to come to their team and they thought they probably were excited about the prospect of having Hossa fill that huge hole in their line up. I'm guessing most don't care much about losing Guerin.

Dustin Byfuglien will move to defense

    Don't think he'd be a top 6 forward though.

Dustin Byfuglien will move to defense

He's not that good of a player, the value he did have was his size and the ability to stand in front of the net, this decision basically removes that value.

    Mario Lemieux- Order Of Canada

With respect to Bobby Orr, this may be the reason many would not consider any defenseman better than him: - played in 9 full seasons in the NHL and won the Norris every single season, except his rookie year, but he did win the Calder that year. - 3 Hart trophies - I think he's the only defenseman to ever win the Art Ross, which he did 2 times - 2 Conn Smythe trophies - 1 Pearson. He did all that when essentially being forced out of the game due to injuries at the age of 27. After that, he only played 36 more games over 3 seasons. So if you want to compare Lidstrom and Orr both after their 27th birthdays, here is what you would get: Orr - 8 Norris, 3 Hart, 2 Art Ross, 2 Conn Smythe, 2 Stanley Cups, 1 Pearson, 1 Calder +579 Lidstrom - 1 Stanley Cup +141 What if Orr had a long healthy career? Haven't you always been one of those guys that played the what if game and pro rated stats to fill in gaps where players where hurt, etc. Or do you only do that when you want to support your view? Seriously though, it doesn't matter with Orr, he accomplished enough in his short time in the NHL. Edit - I added the +/- stats, which you should also note that Orr's did not include his rookie year when the stat was not being recorded. However, Orr does include more years here since he started at 18 vs. Lidstrom at 21

    Mario Lemieux- Order Of Canada

I know you have brought this up several times in the past and I really don't agree here. I've been watching hockey since the early 80's, so I've seen Yzerman's entire career and I don't remember anyone considering him to be a top defensive player until the mid-90s. Getting 2 votes for the Selke does not make you a great defensive player. Some comparisons: Gretzky: - 1 vote in 1985 when scoring 208pts - 1 vote in 1986 when scoring 215pts Is the magic number of votes 2? He never challenged for the Selke in the 80s, not even close.

NHL.com ranks Hockey's best by their numbers.

I guess he just used a poor choice of words then. When I read it, it looked like he was saying Satan, by far, scored more than anyone that ever wore #81. I think that's what he said, but what he probably meant was by scoring during the time a player was wearing #81.

Modano has never stepped foot on the ice to play in the NHL wearing #90, that probably has something to do with it.

    Mario Lemieux- Order Of Canada

Yes, I'm a "Robie High" grad! Haven't heard that joke, but it may be better applied to St. FX. I'm guessing if you started making a list, you'll find it difficult to fit him in the top 15.

    Mario Lemieux- Order Of Canada

I don't have Yzerman in my top 15 and I don't consider myself to be insane, or an idiot. Fact of the matter is, I think most would not include him in the top 15...maybe that means most are idiots....I guess that's possible. To be honest, I have never seen him listed in the top 20 even, on any all-time list I have ever seen. Obviously, no one is right or wrong, but when the vast majority rate him lower than 20, I think it is unfair say someone is an idiot or insane for not including him in the top 15. I have seen him at #24 on a list. Motown sports did a list a couple years ago and had him at #25 (and they are biased). For fun, the Hockey News had him at #78 back in 1998. For reference, all these lists that I have seen all had Lemieux somewhere around #4.

I have no idea how they picked Satan over Hossa. And this comment is strange "by far the highest scoring player ever to wear number 81." by far? Really? He and Hossa actually have the same number of goals and Hossa actually has more points. Hossa has also played over 200 fewer games.

I love Yzerman and I'm not a fan of Lemieux, but I have to disagree, in terms of offensive, it is not close. Again, I love Yzerman, but top 5? I'd be interested in seeing your top 5...actually, your top 10 so I can see the players 6-10 that you put behind Yzerman.

    NHL Rejects Kovalchuk's Contract

You're right, there has been a handful of players over the years that have played to that age....who cares if it's only been 4 or 5 guys out of the thousands that have played in the NHL, who cares that there has only been 1 guy in the past 30+ years to play to that age....

By October 2nd, I would expect the teams to be icing what is pretty close to the regular season roster.

    The Hockey News Top50 List

When I saw the title, I was thinking top 50 all time, which would have been more interesting, but anyway. Any list like this can be picked apart and scrutinized forever, I won't do that, just want to point out a few things that caught my eye: - I'm fine with 1 and 2, regardless of order - Not sure I'd have Miller as 3 - Toews at 5 is uncomprehensible - I don't like calling a player like Toews overrated because he is an awesome player, but if you are going to rate him that high, then yes, he's overrated. - I don't understand how Datsyuk keeps his high spot and Zetterberg drops dramatically. I'd be more apt to keep them both relatively similar to last year. The explanation for Zetterberg's drop must be because of his poor offensive season, but his offensive stats were better than Datsyuk's (ppg basis), why wasn't Datsyuk impacted by his poor offensive season? They probably kept him up there because of his Selke, but I'm not sure that's fair to Zetterberg (not that the list matters or anything though). - I'm not going to throw a hissy fit about Lidstrom being 17. He is declining, there is no question, I would have excpected a drop.

    The Hockey News Top50 List

Firstly, the Hart trophy is supposed to go to the MVP, no the best player, so it doesn't really compare, but ignorning that for a minute, let's assume it goes to the best player. Here is how your question gets answered: - Did Sedin have a better year than Crosby last year? Some or most might answer yes = why he won the Hart. - Is Sedin the better hockey player? I would think most would answer no = why Crosby is higher on this list.

    Hawks sign Fernando Pisani, $500k

I don't see a signficant difference between these players and Pisani's contract is cheaper.

    Hawks sign Fernando Pisani, $500k

To be fair, you should remove the guys that played 5 games and had a better +/-. If you take all the players on the team that played in at least 37 games (gotta get Souray in there), there are 21 players, with Pisani finishing right in the middle. His +/- was worse than 10 guys and better than 10 guys. There is no question that this guy's value has plummeted do to his bad luck in the health department, but there is also no question that there is potential for the contract to be an absolute bargain. Seriously, he couldn't have signed for any less than he did, so how can it be anything other than a potential bargain.

    Pavel Datsyuk

He's pretty slick too, but I found him more shifty as a whole, rather than pure stickhandling.
