    Nick Lidstrom

    1) You don't know (I'm assuming) how he paid for his house. He didn't necessarily buy it outright with cash. You hear stories all the time about so and so mega rich person that owes $X million on a property. 2) Assuming he paid for cash and owes $0 on the house, it doesn't mean everything is profit in a sale. If he spent $4 million on the house and ends up selling it for $3 million, there is no profit....obviously.

    Lapierre at it Again

I don't normally watch a lot of Montreal games, but after theym playing Washington in the first round and watching their game tonight, I've seen more than I've seen all year. Lapierre is a crazy diver/faker...hadn't really seen from him before. He took 2 diving penalties the other day against Washington (2 of the 3 calls all year where it was the only penalty on the play)....unbelievable, 3 all year and 2 of those took place in the same game by the same guy. Anyway, did anyone watch the game tonight? He pulled a Carcillo/Ovechkin. He took a slash across the waist and proceeded to grab his neck in pain....got away with it though and got the call. Can't beat Carcillo though, who proceeded to go crazy when no call was made on his fake out.

    Lapierre at it Again

Guys have gotten fined for diving...at least they started doing that a couple years ago...not sure if they still do. They used to do it and make it public, I remember a few....Avery being one of the them. The idea was to shame the guy.

    Schedule

Why did you bold the "7"? Are you trying to imply somehow that the Wings should get even more of a break because they had to play 7 games vs. some of the other teams that only played 6 games? Those that finish off their opponents early get rewarded with more rest, simple as that. Anyone thinkign there is some sort of scheduling conspiracy really needs to sit down, take 10 deep breaths and clear your minds. After a game 7 is finished, the next round is going to start ASAP and the only thing delaying that would be scheduling conflicts with the arenas and perhaps TV scheduling. In case no one else noticed, Detroit had a bit of break in the 1st round where they didn't play every 2nd night like most other teams.

    Hart Trophy Nominees

Crosby missed one game this year, which I believe they lost, so I don't understand your logic. Awards are handed out on a yearly basis, it's about 2009/10, not how his team might have done without Crosby vs. Malkin in 2008, for example, that makes no sense.

    Ovi's postgame

I didn't watch the post games of either, but generally speaking, most people don't handle losing well, so I don't hold it against him too much. I wasn't a big fan at how he handled the media at the Olympics though (i.e. refusing to speak....even before losing). I understand the rationale, but I think he has a bit of an obligation there. With respect to losing the series, especially game 7, you can try and point a finger at Green or Ovechkin or whoever, but I buy into more of the thought that there is a coaching problem. Ovechkin did try to do too much last night and does so on occassion, he tried to do everything himself, which he does tend to do. His shifts are too long, leaving him unable to back check at the end of shifts (part of the problem on the Moore goal). I don't fault him too much on that though, he's an extremely competitive guy and he's trying to do everything he can to win....I think the coach needs to reign him in better. Trying to do everything yourself simply does not work in the NHL. It might in the NBA, but not the NHL. I also think you are not giving enough credit to some of his teammates. Backstrom is one hell of a hockey player, he didn't score 100+ points because he was riding Ovechkin's coattails. If you watch him play, you can clearly see how good he is. He definately benefits by playing with Ovechkin, but Ovechkin also benefits by playing with Backstrom....a lot.

    History was Made? (says Cleary)

Regardless of trying to substantiate the Wild, etc., Montreal did it last night (they won games 1, 5 and 7 on the road).
  8. Okay, I may be in the minority here, but I decided to have a quick look at the number of a powerplays each team has had so far in the playoffs (after reading about Washington going 1 for 30 so far). Here are the results: DET - 28 PHX - 28 VAN - 24 LAK - 26 COL - 15 SJS - 26 CHI - 23 NSH - 27 WSH - 30 MON - 27 PIT - 28 OTT - 22 NJD - 32 PHI - 29 BOS - 22 BUF - 19 Funny all the series have had relatively the same number of penalties called (24-30 range). The NJD-PHI is a bit out of wack as they only played 5 games, but that's not entirely surprising as PHI is a bit of chippy team. So, my concern is as follows: If you look at each series, the powerplay opportunities for each team are very, very similar, with the exception of SJS-COL, not sure why that is so out of wack, but I suspect it is probably from a particular game or something and not even across the entire series (could be though). You may be asking....so what, looks relatively even for all the teams...what's the beef? Well, I look at it like this: do we really think each team is committing the same number of infractions? I guess on average is should make some sense, but I think it is too even. There is no conspiracy here or anything, I'm just not a fan of the way the officials operate and have been operating for years, and it goes like this: - Team A has taken 3 penalties in a row....you know there is no way they are getting the next penalty and the slightest thing Team B does will result in a call (even up). My philosphy: I don't care if one team gets 15 penalties in a row, if they are deserved, they should be called. A game can result in 15 powerplays for one team and 2 for the other, doesn't mean the reffing was bad, but more often than not, the number of PP for each team will tend to even up.

TSN Play of the Year - Pool C

This was included as well. There were 19 plays already set and the video you showed was one of 10 I believe that was also presented as the possible 20th play in the showdown. Those 10 plays were voted on and to be honest, I can't remember the result.

TSN Play of the Year - Pool C

I refuse to vote for a shootout goal as play of the year......just based on principle.

    No suspension for Hossa

I think there has to be a difference between playoffs and regular season. A 2 game suspension in the playoffs is significantly different than a 2 game suspension in the regular season. In the regular season, you are guaranteed 82 games, in the playoffs, you could be out in 4 games, maybe 7 games, maybe 10, 14.....total maximum is 28.

    Re-alignment

How so? Average one-way distance to Van/Edm/Cgy/SJ = 4,213km, average one-way to Atl, Fla, Tb and Car = 2,110km.

    Jacques Lemaire to retire

His stats with NJ in the regular season and playoffs were good, but not for the type of money he wants.

    Should Lindy Ruff be Fired?

Completely random, but kinda funny that the longest serving head coach in the NHL is only 2 years older than Chris Chelios. He's been the Sabres coach for the past 13 years, perhaps it is time for a change. Although, I think he has done a great job. I know most would say that he hasn't been able to get them over the hump, but I'm not sure they'd even get near that hump if they didn't have a great coach.

    4/26 OOT Playoff Gameday

That diving penalty on Lapierre was brutal...by brutal, I mean the dive was brutal, I agree with the call. Guys embelish, but that was way beyond embelishing.
  16. NHL 2010 Playoffs Leading scorers through April 25th: 1 Sidney Crosby 5g 9a 14pts 2 Mikael Samuelsson 7g 4a 11pts 3 Nicklas Backstrom 5g 4a 9pts 4 Alex Ovechkin 5g 4a 9pts 5 Henrik Zetterberg 6g 2a 8pts I gave a little hint.

    No suspension for Hossa

What's the difference between being kicked out of the game and a 5 minute penalty with less than 2 minutes to go in the game? To those complaining Ovechkin got 2 games and Hossa nothing, what are you thinking? There is absolutely no similarities to the incidents other than a player ending up going awkwardly into the end boards. Let's assume the hits were identical though, there would still be plenty of reason for no suspension, as follows: 1 - Ovechkin's was in the regular season, you can argue that shouldn't matter, but it has historically had a huge difference, see Pronger incidents for recent examples; 2 - Ovechkin was a repeat offender, Hossa not, again, historically a big difference; and 3 - Extent of injury...again, you can argue whether it should matter or not, but the NHL has had a history of punishing more if there is more serious injury. But of course, none of that matters because there was no similarity in the hits. I'm not even sure if Hossa really did much, he barely touched him, looks like he put his hand on him, but he didn't even push.

    Goal Reviews after the game

Serious question here, I know they review goals after the games to make sure the scoring was accurate (see Crosby's supposed 50th changed to Guerin), but do they also review for if they got the assists right? This relates to Crosby as well, love him or hate him (I'm in between), I had to pick him for my pool as I felt PIT would go to the conference finals, so I figured he'd pick up some points. In any event, last night, he should have had an assist on a goal, but assists went to Guerin and Malkin. Crosby passed to Malkin and Malkin passed across, went through Guerin's legs (whiffed on a shot....didn't touch the puck at all) and Letang got it and shot it in. I suspect they only review to make sure they got the goal scorer correct and if that changes, obviously those getting assists will change, but they don't specifically make sure the assists are correct. If I lose my pool by 1pt, I'll be pissed (I'm currently tied for the lead.....I know, way too early to be looking at the standings).

    Interesting Thought...

It isn't ideal, obviously, which is why they are trying to sell the team off as quickly as they can, it's not a long term holding for the NHL. However, it's not like Bettman runs the NHL and owns the Coyotes. I think too many people think Bettman has ultimate powers in terms of doing whatever he wants with respect to the NHL, how games are called, etc. In terms of the NHL owning the Coyotes, if you want to get technical, each owner in the NHL owns an NHL team and 1/29th of the Coyotes.

    Ovechkin snows a child

He does look like a bit of an ass here, which he has starting developing a rep of being, but I don't think it was that big of a deal. Had it been Crosby, as others said, he would be considered the biggest loser on the planet (by some and most around here). If it had of been some random dude, not Ovechkin and not Crosby, it probably wouldn't have even been caught on tape and if it was, it might get mentioned, but no one would remember who did it or talk about it too much.

    Jimmy Howard among Calder Finalists

There are no nominees.....bit of a pet peeve of mine as I constantly see people suggest so and so is nominated for the Hart or some other award, or good 3 guys to pick to be nominated. As someone already stated, sort of, there are no nominees, they don't nominated 3 guys who then get voted on, voters simply vote for whoever they want, as long as they are eligible, and these "finalists" being announced over this week and next are simply those 3 that finished with the most points (based on voting, so many points for each 1st place vote, 2nd place vote, etc.). The voting for ALL of the awards already took place...early last week, before the playoffs started.

    Too Many Men

So, there has been some discussion last night and this morning amongst various media outlets regarding the number of too many men calls so far in the playoffs. Aparently there has been 14 so far. Questions coming up asking why guys can't count, etc. In the Wsh v. Mon game last night, Wash had a powerplay and they had 6 guys out there for what seemed to be about 20 seconds before anyone noticed, it was kinda funny. Aparently LA got caught with 9 guys on the ice last night....yes, 9. I didn't see it, but I'm assuming it must have been 4 guys changing at the same time and the change was not great, but even then, 9 guys is a lot. So I guess the real question is: is the media making a bigger deal out of this than it is? There have been 31 games played so far, so that woudl be a little less than 1 call in every 2nd game. Is that signficantly more than usual? I don't see this penalty as being all that unusual, perhaps in the playoffs I guess?

    Lidstrom

Here's the scary thing: Lidstrom won his first Norris trophy at the age of 31, Orr was essentially done at the age of 27 (when most players are just hitting their prime). At the age of 27, he had accumulated 8 Norris trophies. He played a handful of games over the next few years (36) before officially retiring at the age of 30. I think the fact that Orr's career was cut short is a bit of a knock against him in terms of best ever, but he is still clearly the best defenseman of all time in my eyes.

    The Sens are terrible.

I'd much rather Philly than Boston at this point considering they just lost Gange and Carter for the rest of the year.
