Yes, I'm sure. And if he was born 7 months earlier, he would have been eligible for the 2016 draft as well. I know that's a stretch, but just showing to note that it's not that he was eligible for the 2017 draft by a hair and would have been one of the youngest.....if he was drafted in 2017, he actually would have been of average age to the older end perhaps.
-
I think Leason is a long-shot. He was eligible to be drafted in 2017....so he went undrafted twice. Looking at the stats, you can probably see why...pretty underwhelming. This year his stats are great, but most will likely chalk it up as an older guy playing against younger competition.

I don't know if all the rosters are finalized yet. I've seen Canada's roster, it looks final and includes Leason (2019 eligible) and Lafreniere (2020 eligible). The roster I've seen for the US looks like it's missing a few, but currently includes Hughes and Knight (both 2019 eligible). Not sure about the other countries as the only rosters I've seen are clearly not final.

No, I'm in Canada, from Nova Scotia, but live in Toronto now. Perhaps there is more buzz in eastern Canada or perhaps its because I don't tend to pay much attention to junior hockey anymore outside of the World Juniors. I just figured if there was that much hype, I would have heard more about him (e.g. I heard a lot about McDavid coming up...from when he was about 15). As someone mentioned, I think a lot of the comparison seems to come from him joining the same junior team.
-
I honestly hadn't really heard much about Lafreniere until now, so I certainly haven't heard about him being compared to Crosby.....where is that coming from? I watched the video above and the only real link they made was the fact that he's a potential 1st overall pick coming from the QMJHL, then a comment that he has a desire to always get better. There was no indication at all that they thought he could be as good of a player as Crosby (they didn't suggest otherwise, but never got into that conversation). I checked the highlights and nothing stood out too much (if you compare that to Crosby's highlights from junior) and if you just look at stats, it's not even close.

Can't say it wasn't deserving...what was he thinking? I get grabbing the guys stick, it's hard for guys to resist doing that....but to take your glove off and uppercut the guy to the head from the bench? To those suggesting the league is getting soft.....come on....this was never and should never be ok. I'll save the arguments about league going soft for another day, but it's a very easy comment for someone that only watches the games and doesn't have to worry about being crippled later in life from the game.

Who Do You Want To Play First In The Playoffs?

After they get their first win against a team currently in a theoretical playoff position....then, and only then, will I start appropriate street measurements for the parade route. -
Why does the NHL sort teams by points and not percentage or games behind like in the NBA or MLB?
toby91_ca replied to kalaco's topic in General
The current standings format is helping to keep the Wings out of last place overall...so it has that going for it -
He played centre with Toronto, but he also played forward with the Wings during some stretches.

Curious as to what you think makes them a contender and then favorite in 4 years? Hope for what will come between now and then or based on young players and prospects in the system?

What do you have against Tom Hanks?

I'm not sure what you are not understanding. For fun, I'll respond to your two questions anyway: - For determining what goalie performed better, I have no idea, not enough information....looking at a team's win/loss doesn't help that much....takes a team to win or lose. I get what you are trying to do, but it makes ZERO sense. I think you are looking at standings and saying whoever is ahead of another team is "performing better" - that's not the point of standings, the point is who finishes ahead of the other (which only happens at end of year)......see my response below to your next question. - The rationale for the 20-21 team being ahead of the 19-18 in the standings is because they have earned more points. The logic is that a team hasn't earned any points until they've earned them. You can't assume the 19-18 team is going to win games they haven't played yet. That's the logic of the way they do the standings. I tend to agree with that way, but I totally get the other side of the argument, but at I've said many, many times, I don't care...no one really does as it's meaningless for the reasons already suggested. -

Exactly, by "standings" I'm referring to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Take make it even more clear though, the whole point of this thread was questioning why the league inputs the various records of each team in teh standings. The question was clearly linking to how teams show up as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. NO ONE should care about that during the season. You can argue different ways to present it all you want, there are valid arguments on both sides, but at the end of the day, my point is that it doesn't matter....AT ALL. -

Dead serious. The only reason teams (players, coaches, management, etc.) look at standings during the year is to see their record and everyone else's in their division and against the conference. They look at the standings because that's where the info exists.....but the "standings" that shows who is 1st, 2nd, etc.....they don't look at that because it is absolutely meaningless other than on the final day of the season when all teams have played all 82 games. -
Anyone heard of him? If not, I guess you will soon. He just turned 16 a few days ago and has 5 pts in his first 2 games in Major Junior. He's getting quite a bit of hype out in Eastern Canada (he was selected 1st overall in the draft earlier this year). He's getting comparisons to Crosby as well. Now, I think the comparisons to Crosby and all the hype have a lot to do with where's he's from and where he has played. He's from Cole Harbour, NS, played Bantam AAA for the Cole Harbour Red Wings (same as Crosby) and went to Shattuck Saint Mary's boarding school (Same as Crosby). So, he looks to be a good player so far, but he's probably geeting more hype than deserved just because of all of that. Let's see what happens in the next two years though.

This exactly. Why does anyone care what the standings look like at any point during the season other than after every team has played 82 games? It has to the be the way it in a points system standings though. If a team has more points than another team, they have to be ahead of them in the standings....doesn't matter of their winning record is currently worse. They've earned points that the other team hasn't earned yet....winning record is just as meaningless at looking at mid-year standings. I challenge anyone to provide a logical reason for "in season" standings to have any meaning or use. -

Interesting comment, which I assume comes along with no reasonable back up. -
Steve Yzerman to step down as GM for TBL. Will serve in "Advisory Role".
toby91_ca replied to kliq's topic in General
I generally agree with this, but some might suggest spending so much on salaries will drive up ticket prices and no one is interested in paying big dollars to watch a bad team play. That logic is somewhat flawed though because ticket prices should simply be driven by the market and nothing else....not sure if it always works that way though. -

Yzerman was born in BC, but grew up in Ontario. -

I'm guessing there is more to this, but I don't think there is any Wings' connection. That doesn't mean he doesn't end up back on the Wings' payroll at some point. 8 years did go by very quickly, reading that it surprised me that it's been that long. -
Probably referring to the playoff years during Fedorov's time with the Wings. Fedorov : 162gp, 163pts. Yzerman: 149gp, 135pts.
-
The players earn what they deserve, unless you think more should go to the owners of course....which I don't. They earn what they should earn because of the revenues they bring in. Ticket prices aren't high because of player salaries, it's more the other way around. Ticket prices are priced at market....if the market suggests the prices are too high, then prices would come down...simple as that.

The Yzerman stats above are not as great as they look when you compare to the rest of the league at the time. Still extremely good, just not as good as you think when you are considering today's scoring totals. As an example, those numbers looks better than Crosby's, but Crosby seems to be in the top 1-3 scorers every single year (barring injury).....that's not the case with the numbers above. It's somewhat due to Wayne and Mario....however, he was a long way off those two most years as well....his best year at 155pts was good for 3rd and 44pts behind the leader, 13pts behind #2

He hasn't played a single game yet in the NHL, so yeah, I'm guessing most will still need convincing.
