Whatever. My main point is that there are still WAY better options at this point than Williams and Sykora. Pyatt? Grier? Even Bertuzzi.
-
Perhaps Sykora's situation is merely rumored, but the Williams offer has been confirmed. Also, if we would have traded away a bit of salary, I think we could have re-signed Hossa and then wouldn't be worrying about our current situation. I do believe we're in a real mess.

Lol, the two worst free agents available and Kenny decides to go for them. He's made some really "questionable" decisions this off-season.....
-
I just can't get this out of my head. Jason Useless Williams? This had to be a joke right? If Holland signs this guy for any more then the league minimum, he will have officially lost his mind and I'd want him OUT of the GM chair.

OH GOD, YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! BOOOOOOOO!!!!! :ranting:

Mike Grier's agent says he's 'interested' in Red Wings

Who would have guessed we'd be at the end of July, s***tin ourselves over a potential signing of Mike Grier. -
He had 36 points a few seasons ago and then 40 this season (with a seven goal drop from 19 to 12), and now you think he's just gonna jump to 65 points? Wishful thinking. Plus, he's probably going to be stuck with less talented linemates than before, which will really limit his production. This goes right along with everyone's strange assumption that Leino with put up 20 goals, Helm will put up 25, and Abs will put up at least 15. I just don't get it.

LOL. First people here thought Sundin might come, followed by Heatley, and now Kessel. Come on, seriously? There tons of teams that can afford to pony up a lot more dough then we can. There is absolutely no way Kessel will come. Enjoy your pipedream folks! Realistically, I still see Bertuzzi, Grier or Pyatt as our MAIN potential signings. I'll take any except Grier.

My ass. This would never happen. We got rid of this loser for a reason.
-
Which means we can't sign ANYONE in the market until all this stuff is over and done with. LAME

Agreed. We're pretty much guaranteed little to no offense from the bottom six.
-
Would like to have him, but it would never happen.

Though I REALLY think we need to sign someone, I don't think Holland will. At the most, maybe have free agent try outs at camp.
-
Oh s***, 3 mil? I retract my statement
-
holy s***, one million per year? We could have done that. Disappointing to say the least
-
Dude, the deal is done. Hudler is gone.
-
NOOOO!!!! Man, really wanted him.
-
This just made my day. Holland is actually searching for a bargain price forward who will provide grit and offense, exactly what I think we need. Look for a signing around mid-July. MLive

LOL, all I've been saying is "what if they don't?". Why didn't you just respond like that in the first place? Before you acted like the possibility was unreal and now you acknowledge it. I don't get it.
-
Well, first off, I think thats with Lilja counting against the cap which he probably won't due to injury. Even if he's okay, he's still first up for trade bait. So essentially, we have about 3 million in cap space. I think we can get a solid scorer to sign a multi-year with bonuses for 2-2.25 per year. Then, we sign a grit guy for 500-700 for a one year. It can be done. Worse case scenario, do some free agent try outs at camp and maybe we'll find another gem like we did with Cleary and get them to sign for cheap. There are ways. You quote "theory" like the turn around in defense is such a sure thing. It's not. Even if you believe the Wings decided to slack off in defense last season and turn it on in the playoffs, the same thing might happen next season. Except next season, the consequences will be a lot more dire.
-
While I hope thats the case, these are simply theories. The fact is most of the guys we relied on for defense last season, will have to be relied on again the next. They may turn things around, or they may put up an encore performance. We won't know until the season starts. THIS is why I believe its essential to get SOME scorers in there in case our defense fails once again. If we don't, unlike last season, we'll have nothing to back them up.

I'm a bit conflicted about that. Sure it seems kinda greedy, but he obviously would have received a way larger offer through arbitration and would have gotten at least 3 million if he signed with another NHL team. The fact is, because the only way to receive more money was to sign with another NHL team, he decided just to leave, as he only wants to play for Detroit....
