Dude! All those points I can completely agree with. Basketball and Baseball are totally more of "pick up and play" sports and the lack of programs to get kids interested does take its toll. Your original argument though was that of attendance rates! I do have to disagree about Michigan being a BB state. Unless times have REALLY changed for the worse.

The Lions lack of attendance has only been of recent. I mean, when you haven't won a single game all season, eventually, people are gonna stop showing up. I can almost guarantee you this would be the case whether the team was situated in a struggling city or not. There wasn't a lack of attendance problem at the beginning of the season. As for the Pistons, they sold out every game from 2004-2008. Lull in attendance huh? Last season, the Tigers set a single-season attendance record with 3 million. They finished 8th in the league and ended with an average of 98.6% of full capacity attendance rate per game. Still care to argue with me? The question now is what the Stars will do. Honestly though, this whole thing feels soooo blown out of proportion. He said a crude and rude (but still funny) comment that has attracted a great deal of publicity to the NHL (and remember, theres no such thing as bad publicity. Marketing 101) and Bettman suspends him. Another great move by Bettman (cough ********cough). I've seen horrible, injury intended hits get far less then six games.....is this fair? While the NFL is dealing with players robbing, shooting, and beating and the MLB dealing with players shooting themselves up with god knows what, we have a player here who make an over the edge comment and now he is public enemy number 1. Then you got the Dallas organization completely using him as an excuse for the trouble the Stars are in this season. How lame is that. Watching Tippett speak out about how "his behavior reflects our organization and now we look bad because we were painted with a bad brush" is such a crock of s***. First off, NO ONE thinks Avery is the god damn Stars mascot, so for them to make the argument that now THEY looks bad because of him is utter nonsense. No one is going to think to themself, "wow, that Avery is quite the bad guy, that means that whole organization is like him". The fact of the matter is, the Stars needed an excuse, and now they have found one in Avery. Shame on Bettman, shame on the Stars.

I understand that times are tough in Michigan right now, but I really don't know how far that can argument go anymore when the Pistons/Lions/Tigers still consistently sell out almost every game. Are Michiganers just giving less and less a s*** about a hockey? Specifically the Wings? In all honestly, this lack of fan dilemma we have at the Joe started almost immediately after Stevie Y retired. Seems like hockey left Detroit with Steve stepped off the ice. On a plus side, I do notice that Friday and especially Saturday games still get many fans at the Joe.
