2008-2009 NBA Season Thread (Pistons trade for Allen Iverson)
Cruiser008 replied to timothy1997's topic in Other Sports
Ironic? Hardly surprizing IMO. Teams play better than they share the ball and guys have each other's back on D. Iverson has always been a cancer to any team he's been on, and is EASILY the most overrated player in the league. Consider Detroit's current season: Record without AI (pre-trade and the games he's missed): 5-1 Record with AI: 23-28 Hopefully Iverson misses practise again and get suspended indefinitely 'cause the Pistons are a lottery team with him but are an Eastern Conference darkhouse when he doesn't play. -
We need to pick up another solid defensive d-man (doesn't have to be physical but must have NHL-caliber puck skills) at the trading deadline. I fully expect Kenny to address this.
-
It's clear we need another solid defensive D-man. Meech should NOT be playing in the playoffs while Kronner and Stu need to get their heads (and asses) in order.
-
Those of you who think Cherry is over the top (or not) NEED to watch his post-game rant tonight on (and I'm paraphrasing here) the sissies that play on Detroit and their boring Euro-hockey that no one like, 'cause Ron MacLean's wife said so.

Yeah I just saw this.... I'm speechless. How is this guy still on TV?

QFT. If there was an award for Least Valuable Player in the NBA AI would surely win it. -
Is it time to make some major moves for this year's playoff run?

Another reason why we should trade for Niklas Havelid. The guy was an important cog in Anaheim's run to the finals in 2003.... got to within a whisker of the cup but came up just short in game 7 of the SCF. During the Detroit series he was part of the D-corps that shut down the likes of Shanahan, Fedorov, Hull et al which is no small feat. Morever he's familiar with Babcock who coached him in Anaheim. -
Pretty much.... his D has taken step back this year for some reason.
-
Neil would be an EXCELLENT pickup.... not to mention if we get him that means SJ doesn't get him.

The Hockey News' proposed Red Wing trade The second proposal in the link above says that we trade Cory Emmerton and a 5th round pick for ATL D-man Niclas Havelid. Niclas Havelid's states GP 60 G 2 A 11 Pts 13 +/- 0 PIM 42 SOG 39 TOI/G 20:55 HITS 35 BLK 160 I like this proposal a lot as Havelid is a solid defensive D-man (ideal for the 2nd pairing) who blocks a ton of shots and Emmerton is rated as only our 10th best prospect by www.redwingscentral.com and 13th best prospect on Hockey's Future. -
Awesome read; definitely some great quips in there.

Great thread! Thanks for sharing guys!

Franzen has been AWESOME but let's not forget that he's 30 years old, so this may be his last chance at a big long-term contract. Moreover he's already won the cup, so I dunno.... I don't really see him taking a significant home-town discount. If we can sign Hossa for 6 mil. I say do it.

That game was freakin' awesome

After thinking about it I like this deal a bit more. If Z retires in 10 years his contract comes off the books so then it becomes a 10 year 60 million contract which is great. If he remains healthy and well-conditioned (conditioning is a given), then he could well be productive into his late 30s a la Sundin and Alfredsson. In this scenario a cap hit of 6 million for a 37-38 year old Zetterberg (which assuming 3% inflation would be equivalent to a cap hit of 4.5 million right now) is OK. The only risk is his chronic back problems but for a top 10 forward in the NHL that's a big risk that you HAVE to be willing to take.
-
12 years?!? Love the deal right now but a 38 year-old Zetterberg is NOT worth a 6 million cap hit. I would have preferred something like 9 years @ 7 million per year. Again great deal right now not so good for the long term future even if the cap goes up to like $80 million in 10 years (btw @ 3% annual inflation the cap SHOULD be at 76 million in 10 years)

Does regular season really matter to the wings?

I'm gonna go against the grain and say hardly. The 1st round exits of 2001, 2003 and 2006 are my evidence. -
Tough game to call. Sharks are unbelievable at home but the Wings have come to play.
-
to Mule and Sammy! (and yours truly ) Here's hoping we can resign both of 'em next year

This thread needs to be read from the (predictions at the beginning) for full effect...

The Iverson experiment is looking like an epic fail right now.... it's brutal to watch. -
I agree.... let's replace Osgood with Joey MacDonald! Just look at the stats through the first 2 months: MacDonald has more wins, a better save percentage and a better GAA despite playing for like the worst team ever! So in conclusion: MacDonald >> Ozzie

So there you have it; 'Dice is coming back. Dumars does it AGAIN! Agent: Antonio McDyess will re-sign with Pistons Edit: Beat me to it! -
The reffing is a joke whenever the Wings take a lead. And that play late where the puck hit Vinny..... how the **** is the faceoff still in the Red Wing zone? Absolutely ridiculous. Excellent hockey for 40 min. though.
