To the first point, yes he was. But instead of phoning it in and doing nothing like todays team would, Downey went after Lappy and sparked the team to a victory. That is team toughness, a guy sparking the team to keep playing hard and WIN for the guy who was injured through a dirty (ish) hit. Especially when it's our captain. To your second point, fair enough. I feel the same way, I'd rather have the Lucic type then the Downey type especially for the Wings. If we could have both, well happy days, but I think we both know that won't happen for quite a while. Thirdly, I think Downey had an impact on the mentality of the 2008 team, but definitely it's a stretch to say he was the reason we won. And definitely McCarty, Shanny and Kocur had more impact during those runs. But Don isn't totally out to lunch (and I'm not saying your saying that because clearly I think we're on the same page here) I think we do need some type of physical presence up front if we wanna make a run again this year.

Was reading a Puck Daddy article today and it got me thinking, it is about drafting the tough players that can play nowadays. Holland and Andersson should be given all the credit in the world for finding the guys they've found in later rounds, but lately they haven't been getting the kinda guys we need to put us over the top (ie the big scoring winger and complimentary bottom line/pairing guys who are big and tough) From the 2006 draft on, and before people jump on me these are just guys are had a shot at and missed: 2006 Milan Lucic Jamie McBain Ryan White Brad Marchand (yuck) Cal Clutterbuck Theo Peckham 2007 Matt Frattin Keith Aulie Jamie Benn 2008 Travis Hamonic Marco Scandella Zach Smith Dale Weise Zach Rinaldo Jason Demers (yuck) 2009 Ryan O'Reilly Kyle Clifford Marcus Foligno 2010 Quinton Howden Devante Smith-Pelley We've drafted some good players, and by going through the drafts we have had quite a few steals. But the fact remains all of the players I listed we had shots at, hindsight is 20/20 and I think Sheahan could develop into a pretty good bottom liner for us but it is too bad we couldn't land just one of these guys.

Hope Commodore is back in so at least we can play a little chippy, I have faith in Conks... that he'll be sitting on the bench by the midway point of the 2nd period. But stranger things have happened, f*** the Hawks

The Wings haven't won a Cup without an enforcer. We haven't had playoff sucess the last 2 seasons and haven't made many changes, I haven't seen the video yet but it doesn't seem to me as though Don is saying anything but true things. If he is sarcastically mocking Kenny then he can go on, but the toughness issue cannot be argued against.

Wilson seems like a good pick to me. If only we could sneak into the top 5, Matthew Dumba may be a bit undersized but the kid hits like a tank and wears his heart on his sleeve.

I love the WJHC, but until Canada get there heads out of there asses and start putting more talented kids who deserve to play on the ice, I don't mind seeing a hard working team like Sweden win. I love Roger Ronnberg, that's a hockey coach. Oh and why are you surprised by the fans reactions? The games were played in Calgary and Edmonton afterall! Oh and Eric Francis is actually a funny guy and a good radio host (listen to him every morning on the way to work) but he doesn't know s*** about hockey because, you guessed it, he's a Flames reporter (and closet fan )

Serves Canada right, enough trying to build these "NHL" style teams. Get the most talented players on the team like the Swedes and Russians do. Of the top 10 scorers in the QMJHL, only one had an invite to camp and was cut (Zach Phillips). Of the top 10 scorers in the OHL, only 2 were invited to camp and Tyler Toffoli was cut for some reason..obviously 30 goals in 34 games isn't good enough for Team Canada. Of the top 10 scorers in the WHL only 3 were invited and Ty Rattie (the LEADING) point getter was cut 37 goals in 37 games. Give me a ******* break, there's a reason the Canadian teams were so good from 2001-2009 because we always had top end offensive talent leading the team. I won't even get started on the goaltending because once again they picked the wrong 2 guys and it cost them. Maybe they'll learn next year. As far as Russia, I hate to say it but they deserved that win, they were the better team.
