As discussed before, an enforcer does usually make everyone play a little bit tougher and might inspire everyone to stick up for their teammates/selfs more often and give them all a testosterone kick up the backside. Tatar has dropped the gloves twice this season sticking up for himself. If little Tatar can with the AHL bullies, why can't all our big strong players? In Grand Rapids if anyone touches the goalie he gets an absolute beat down, usually by Exelby or Smith. There's a rumour going around that we're actively looking for a tough guy, from hockeyfights.com. It's probably true, last time there was that rumour we tried to sign Colton Orr, failed and signed Brad May instead. Colton Orr is available, I believe.

I feel bad for Commodore. He's never really had a chance due to his preseason injury coupled with never playing more than the odd game so far. Unless there's an injury on defence it doesn't seem like he's gonna play. What's the plan then? Waive him? Minors? Conditioning stint? Personally, I'd like to throw the idea out of rotating him in as a 4th line forward every now and then. Get him to use his size, bang some bodies and crash the net. It might not be ideal, but it'll at least help get him into game shape so he's able to play some games on D if needed. Rotating him with Miller/Emmerton/Connor until Mursak returns would be a possible solution. Just think it's a shame seeing him as a healthy scratch every game without getting a proper chance. I think if he was waived someone would claim him. Detroit wasn't the only offer he had in the offseason. Just seems a waste.

Give them all double roughing minors.

You can't have a guy not playing for weeks and weeks on end. He's gonna be so out of shape and then when we get an injury on defense he's not gonna be the most ideal replacement is he? At the very least he needs a conditioning stint.

I agree there is a correlation between having a tougher guy on the roster and everyone else playing with a couple of extra inches of height. Players feed off each others energy and physicality and gives the team a mental attitude of giving that extra bit of toughness which goes hand in hand with a general increased work ethic. The same can be said about a team with no toughness. If no one consistently sticks up for their teammates, the idea of backing someone up will seem almost foreign and players will be hesitant. Same goes for playing with a physical edge. Winning the mental side of the game is essential to being a consistent regular season team and a successful post season team. Physicality comes under that, for sure. Don't get me started on Franzen's pathetic display last night. Hudler fights back and shows more balls than he does and he should take a long look at himself. edit: grammar

I agree, actually. It's not like he's eating up loads of salary and we're close to the cap. He's made the odd mistake, but so has everyone else this year. Especially on D. I wouldn't be getting mad at him for costing the odd goal every now and then, I'd get mad at the Bertuzzi's, Hudler's, Abdelkader's and Zetterberg's for having an impressive 11 goals combined between them in 97 combined games played. I'm also not that high on Emmerton and his offensive contributions, but as 4th liner rookie I'll let it slide for now.

Krys Barch is one of those tough guys who actually gets some points in a season and can play. I don't think he's that overpaid at $850k.

Looks like Chicago are gooning it up tonight! I actually liked Dan Carcillo...when he was at Phoenix. Lost his way at Philly. Agree that Callahan should be playing. He's playing in Grand Rapids, so surely some experience playing against bigger, older players is essential? Just my thoughts (also stating the obvious).
