I miss Downey. Thats all im gonna say about tonight. Howard was never going to be the messiah. His stats in GR this season have been very incosistant with the team having a higher win % with Larsson in goal. Howard is the Osgood of GR

It just shows how much of a liability enforcers are and how one dimensional they are...especially compared to the likes of Draper, Maltby and Kopecky. Errr....

Theyre not just missing Downey. Theyre missing Drake as well. And those two tough physical guys gave the wings a fearless physical mindset. Ive hardly seen any scrums this season, last year you could easily get a couple a game. The Dallas game where Downey played is a testament to the energy the team can gain just by having him in the line-up.

Also, the way the instigator rule is used has changed as well. You rarely see a 2+5+10 being handed out when a fight is instigated. Usually the instigator will get an extra 2 for roughing (see Davison v Downey last season). So not only are fights rising, but the refs are finding ways around the rule. And so long as hitting is allowed in hockey, there will always be a need for enforcers. Whether its Donald Brashear or a strong powerplay. Just a Donald Brashear is a much more effective enforcer when your 6-2 up with 10 mins to go in the 3rd.

I don't see why we need Kopecky on this team taking up a roster spot. I don't see why we need Chelios on this team taking up a roster spot. It happens. At least with Downey it would be someone who brings an extra dimension to the team taking up a spot.

To be fair Downey has sucked in GR this season. When hes fought hes been good, but hes hardly done it enough to be considered a top HW in the AHL.
