The cross check took a Caps defenseman out of position to block the shot. I mean he probably wouldn't have anyway, but what's to stop a team who needs one goal to tie it up from just taking 4 players our as a shot is released if they don't call them like that?

I realize fully what the awards say. It says player deemed most valuable to his team blah blah blah. What it does not say, however, is "Given to the most important player on a team where the difference in importance between numbers 1 and 2 is the greatest." In my mind, the best player in the league is the most valuable to his team (and vice-versa). Playing on a lesser team does not make a player's absolute worth/value any greater (although it may make their value relative to their teammates' increase).

That's not quite true. Picks 1-14 are according to a weighted lottery. Picks 15-30 are set after the playoffs. And you don't automatically get the 1st overall for finishing 30th. You actually only have a 48.2% chance of getting it.

I disagree with the staged fight penalty. One big reason to fight is to give your team some momentum, and I don't see anything wrong with doing it right off a faceoff. But I actually agree with Burke (and I feel dirty about it) about the retaliation for clean hits. That's got to stop.

That's pretty much what happens in lacrosse. If you get called for a stick check and pull your strings or slam the head on the ground or step on it, it's an automatic minute, full time.

Great call to have his stick checked. Those last 2 minutes were one of the only times I've ever wanted to Leafs to win I think.
