    Martin Brodeur Vs. Patrick Roy

Career Games/Record: Hasek..................(668 actual min.) 687 (359-211-4-T?) .523 Win % Brodeur...............(866 actual min.) 880 (487-259-7-T?) .553 Win % GAA: Hasek..................2.21 Brodeur...............2.20 Save Percentage: Hasek..................923 Brodeur...............913 Career Shutouts: Hasek..................74.................1 shutout every 9.03 games Brodeur...............92.................1 shutout every 9.41 games Career Shots Against Per Game: Hasek..............................................28.7 per game Brodeur...........................................25.3 per game These are regular season numbers for those interested, trophies are excluded since they are not a physical statistic. It's interesting to see how similar the numbers are for these two all-NHL keepers, even in winning percentage and shutouts per game where one can conjecture that if the Dom had played more games in the NHL, he would be comparable in career numbers since the pace is the same or better. edit: Hiei you are crazed. BTW Roy's worst defensive year was probably '96 while on Montreal, if you know what I mean . Oh yeah, the same year Brodeur led NJ to no playoffs on a whiffed goal against lowly Ottawa. Hmmm, also Hasek's only non-playoff year in his career.

    Martin Brodeur Vs. Patrick Roy

Roy was better than Brodeur in my book...I would take Dom over either, we're talking when these guys were in the midst of their careers obviously, since Roy is retired and DH is 41. Brodeur definitely padded his stats with the Devils clamping style of the 90s and early 2000s. That's a fact. Whether he is a superb Vezina worthy keeper this season is not the question, since people are basing their assertions on career numbers. Brodeur is having a season that statistically is similar to either of Hasek's Hart seasons in 97 or 98 or even 99 which was his best year which he ONLY won the Vezina, so he is surely doing well, but it hasn't always been this way...this is one of the few years he has been near the top in sp% b/c it is so hard to keep it high when you face so few shots as he did during most seasons in Jersey. Just look at Hasek this year; he'd have a much better save percentage if he was seeing more shots...an extra 8-10 shots a night aren't going to change his GAA much, and will increase the SP in a dramatic way. So, the door swings both ways on that, save percentage is not a waterproof barometer either. That said, it's also not really possible to rank players' greatness...what's better is a group of players that are all clearly very close in skill and results. Obviously, the top five keepers in the last twenty years are going to be, in alphabetical order: Belfour Brodeur Hasek Richter Roy Richter is arguable, but based on skill and toughness, I would have him top 5. This is the only honest way to do it since wins and GAA and save percentage or shutouts are not pure goaltender stats...all are affected hugely by the entire team and system, so in the end, they should not be used to determine if Brodeur is better than Roy or whoever. You're also going to see most people ranking modern goaltenders ahead of retired and forgotten keepers...even Roy's memory is fading in the minds of the average fan when all they hear is Brodeur-Brodeur-Brodeur. And you have old-as-all-hell Hasek leading the league in GAA for most of the season, and people still say "he was never THAT good" because they forget he was 34 once, too (and winning the Hart that season). We'll see what numbers the Marty is putting up then--let's restart this discussion in 8 years.

Free Agents to target this summer

Unless Datsyuk burns it up this year in the playoffs, DRW should let him walk. He's going to command plenty of overpayment from various teams, and if he's not going to perform in the playoffs (can anyone say Marty Turco?) the same way he does in the regular season, his time is up. One more chance, it's getting a little ridiculous. Let him go and use the money to get someone who delivers in the crunch. BTW Buffalo already had their Stevie, his name was Pat LaFontaine.

To retire or not to retire... ?

Alexei Zhamnov - yes, already has Brian Leetch - yes, hasn't played in a year, he's done Bryan Berard - maybe Chris Simon - has 25 points and 10 goals this year...will be back with NYI or someone else. Darius Kasperaitis - maybe Donald Brashear - someone will want him just for the belts he carries with him Ed Belfour - should play a year or two more (one)...he's looked great this year Eric Lindros - probably b/c of injuries Gary Roberts - should play one more year with TOR Glen Wesley - no, is still quality defender Jason Allison - someone should sign him but as you say probably not and will retire Jeremy Roenick - yes Jim Dowd - no John LeClair - I believe John still has it, but I guess I'm the only one Peter Bondra - no, Hawks won't resign but someone probably will for cheap Peter Forsberg - no, he'll be back to collect a paycheck Petr Nedved - he'll sign for less somewhere and contribute...what he will contribute (?) Pierre Turgeon - yes, gone Sandis Ozolinsh - I say he goes back to Russia/Latvia Scott Mellanby - nope, one more for the RatMan Sean Burke - Burke will be gone and Hanna Labarbera will be #1 as planned. Probably sign as a backup somewhere a la Belfour. His best this season was obviously the only time Wings fans watched him. Sergei Gonchar - Nope, back to Pittsburgh is my guess. Teppo Numminen - Repo-Man still has tons left. Well, maybe one season or so... Tony Amonte - I think he'll play another year as a checker a la his buddy Roenick. Trevor Linden - He'll be back in Van for less. Chris Chelios - Cheli is an all-time great...but he can't shoot to save his life and at times looks like a pilon out there. Gordie Howe hung around but Chelios does less with less than he. Time to hang 'em up Chel. Dominik Hasek - Dom has been good this year, but he should and I think he will pack it in after this season's kick at the playoff can. Injuries are just too much of a concern with The Czech Shutter; as much as I hate to see him go, it's probably time.

3/11 GDT: Bruins @ Red Wings

Probably when he's not focused his reaction time goes down. Also like you mention he's just coming back. It's not crazy to be worrying about him wearing down, he probably doesn't think it'll happen to him b/c he hasn't made it this many games in a season in so long.

3/11 GDT: Bruins @ Red Wings

Here you go people...check my posts, I am a big Hasek fan, but I can certainly watch his play objectively. He had a bad game today, period. Everybody has bad games, it's OK to acknowledge it, and he wasn't alone. Probably the early start time that had something to do with it, I would've thought Ozzie would've played this afternoon. But, regardless, Dom showed shades of Jan. 3 vs. SJ today. He was especially slow at times today and it cost him dearly on some goals, most notably the one with him out of the net which he moved too slowly getting back in (he could've moved a little faster, seriously), and the other notable ones being the Datsyuk "own-goal" and the one that just slithered by his stick for the tap-in (I think it was #5/6). These are plays he usually makes with ease but he just wasn't in the game today. Maybe he'll be better next time. Not his fault they lost but he should've been a lot better. edit: They'll probably be in some matinees for the playoffs if any games fall on the weekends for suck NBC.

Just go here. The best goalie board there is: GSBB

Brodeur sucks, he should be in the minors.

    Game announcers for the Predators

Pete Weber is a novice play-by-play man...he's a wannabe Rick Jeanneret, plain and simple. Terry Crisp sucks, too...he's way too wacky to be an analyst. IMO there are two kinds of analysts, the kind of people who are objective and realistic, and those that exaggerate and are unrealistic. Crisp is definitely the latter.

Homer out a few games, Hasek back this weekend

Did anyone really think that when they said "Hasek out 2 games to rest" it didn't mean "Hasek out 4-8-who knows? games with an injury"? I just don't understand why they don't just say he's on the shelf indefinitely rather than "2 games" when it's obviously a lie.

Why I Wish The Wings Got Belfour Instead of Hasek

I think what is arguable is whether he MAINTAINED possession before shooting. Does someone have to take the puck away from you for possession to be ended? A good comparison would be the offside rule, i.e. being able to precede the puck into the zone as long as you have control/possession. Players get whistled all the time as not having control/possession for showing more than Hull had at the time before the second shot. That is why the goal shouldn't have counted, and why the rule was hurriedly changed that offseason.

Hasek Out 2 Games With Thigh Injury

It should be noted that last season the Senators originally said Dom "might miss a couple games (after Torino)", and we know what that became. Also note that Dom noted "tightness", meaning it's a muscle pull or strain, not a bone bruise or anything else--have you guys seen some of the moves he's been making in the last two games? Falling back on his pad and such...most goalies would blow a knee doing that, but it's no surprise that it's put stress on him. Also note the proximity to the wrist issue. Let's face it, Babcock has made the same mistake Murray made last year, overplaying him. Who cares if he's facing twenty shots per game, he's still going up and down on forty including blocked and wide shots, not to mention warmups. Dom's an old guy with a body that is more age-riddled than his mind. He's just asking for trouble being in this many games. He'll probably be back, but they could've avoided this by not playing him so much.

More importantly, who's the 15-year-old hanging on TD?

    Nabokov save on Kariya

I usually criticize people who say exactly what I am about to say, but if Nabokov hadn't slid into the stack (and instead had slid across semi-upright), that shot probably would've hit him in the chest (or flew over his shoulder and in). Not saying it was not an excellent play by Nabby, or that the stack wasn't the right move to make, but I guess I'm just measuring the quality of the save on the difficulty of the shot. It was a great looking save, but certainly not the "greatest save I've ever seen" (did Randy Hahn say something like that ). Pretty sure The Dom/Brodeur/et al have made saves like that repeatedly.

Anyone Else Concerned About # Of Hasek's Starts?

In case anyone wondered, his equipment got lost in the airline baggage and he needed to pratice before the first game if he was to start (and at the time Vokoun was 1b keeper and they were going to play one game each to start and then see who looked better and go from there), so he borrowed some assorted gear from local Italians to practice, and then he got his stuff the next day, which was the pre-11" era 12" leg pads, because he said he wanted to wear the bigger gear if they let him. On a sidenote, Vokoun said the day he borrowed the gear that HE would never do such a thing, since he was afraid of being injured. Inevitably, Vokoun also stuck with his 11" pads.

    New Canucks Uniforms Next Season

Johnny Canuck was a Canadian cartoon hero and superhero who was created as a political cartoon in 1869 and was later re-invented, first in 1942, then in 1975. Johnny Canuck was created as a national personification of Canada. He first appeared in early political cartoons dating to 1869 where he was portrayed as a younger cousin of the United States' Uncle Sam and Britain's John Bull. Depicted as a wholesome, if simple-minded, fellow in the garb of a habitant, farmer, logger, rancher or soldier, he often resisted the bullying of John Bull or Uncle Sam. For thirty years, he was a staple of editorial cartoonists. Then, in the early twentieth century, he faded from view. The character re-emerged during World War II in the February 1942 issue of Bell's Dime Comics No.1. Cartoonist Leo Bachle created the character as a teenager, apparently on a challenge from a Bell executive. Initially, Johnny Canuck had no superpowers. Bachle explained: I drew Johnny Canuck and he had my face, and everybody at my school (Danforth Tech) read it, and I was popular. I drew the teachers, and all the kids read the books to see whose name I was going to mention. Johnny Canuck's cartoon exploits helped Canada fight against Nazism. Like Captain America, he met Adolf Hitler and almost single-handedly ended the war. The use of such stock figures diminished in popularity after World War II. However, in 1975, a new comic book character, Captain Canuck, emerged. Created by Richard Comely (who was unaware of the earlier Johnny Canuck character) Captain Canuck was a superhero rather than just a hero, he wore red tights, and bore a red maple leaf emblazoned on his forehead. In 1995, Canada Post issued a series of Canadian postage stamps celebrating Canada’s comic-book superheroes.1 Johnny Canuck is depicted as he appeared in the comic books, dressed in flight jacket, goggles, leather headgear and boots. Johnny Canuck is linked to a tradition of stalwart, honest, upstanding Canadian heroes. In January 2006, "Johnny Canuck and the Last Burlesque," a musical comedy, premiered at the Mainline Theatre in Montreal. The play, created by Jeremy Hechtman and Patrick Goddard, concerned the post-World War II life of Johnny Canuck and his adventures as a burlesque star. The play starred Aarron Turner as the sexually naive Johnny Canuck. So, as you can see, he was a pretty cool guy The colors are fine but the JC logo is a pathetic attempt at looking vintage and now likely becomes the worst logo in the NHL next to the Ducks "Tiny Word" logo (if they would just change it to the duck foot alone). Seriously guys, it sucks...it looks like a Tom and Jerry cartoon. And the jerseys are very generic striping, as though RBK sent a template and they just plugged in the colors. The NHL is headed downhill fast. edit: Is that the HNIC logo around the Tom and Jerry, or what?

Official: Blues trade Tkachuk to Thrashers

This reminds me of what everybody in Ottawa was crying about last year (including the posting fans)...waaaaaah, the prices are too high, won't they just take a third round conditional draft pick for the player I want? No. Because to get something you want of value, you must surrender something of value. And if you don't, someone else will. Sacrifices in the past have at times not panned out, but if you truly believe Detroit needs help then it is a chance you must take. Don't half-ass it like Ottawa last season (Tyler Arnasson was a healthy scratch after the trade after coming in as a hopeful no-2 center)...Muckler waited too long, didn't want to give away enough, and ended up with nothing, while a team called Carolina scooped up the player he was Weighting for. Kenny needs to make a decisive move while there are still worthwhile players on the market... 1.Guerin is the best choice obviously, Shanahan-type right-shooting player who still has wheels and is having a good offensive year which chances are would continue in Detroit, 2.Bertuzzi -- a chance but so much upside and is a warrior of a player, would be great come playoff time... 3.Owen Nolan has got the juices flowing again and is another right-shooter for the power play, a heavy shot and he would come cheaper than Guerin. Making a meaningful addition would all have an impact, statistically and emotionally as far as morale goes. The other players see that the GM has made a move to help the team win it all. Ottawa last season picks up Arnasson, I would imagine the locker room sagged a bit, like, WTF, this is THE MOVE we've waited all season for? The same will happen here unless KH pulls the trigger, which as discussed may or may not happen, but would be good if he did

    Deadline deal for goalie?

Holland has said he could resign the Dom...if Hasek makes it through the season without hurting his groin and the Wings win at least one round of the playoffs, after the season they had, my guess is they will sign him another year.

Sens' Emery suspended for three games

Emery sucks...that was a vicious swing that connected...had he not been wearing a visor that would've been on par with McSorley vs. Brashear. Three games is sufficient but five would've been better. Edit: Puckloo, I believe we posted at the same time here. Glad to know we're on the same page with this one.

    Hasek - The 3rd Defenseman?

Haven't people been watching the games this year...DH does a "death-charge" like every five games or so since the beginning of the year. I have watched and recorded every game this year and it didn't start with the Nash one, nor the one vs. New Jersey. Obviously lately he's done it about five times over two games, which obviously means he's been using it more because it's been working. Now that it has been yielding some goals, he probably won't do it quite as often. He's a smart guy, that's been his thing for his whole career, watching what works and doesn't work and adjusting. However, for the naysayers, it's clear we haven't seen the last "Hasek Death Charge". :!:
