    playoff concerns

Just like to point out a couple stats on Roenick, he is tied for seventh on the team in points with 9 goals and 22 points in 54 games, however he LEADS THE TEAM with 6 game-winning goals (technically tied w/ Michalek) and is second in shooting percentage. Anytime I watch SJ he plays tough, plays hard, plays like every game is his last, I guess that's the sort of attitude you gain when you are so close to being edged out of doing what you love. The other night against New Jersey Brodeur gave him some bull about bumping him and Roenick got right in his face and gave him a hard chest bump, the Devs all jumped him, 'twas great, loved it...it'll be too bad when he's out of the game. This is the sort of guy you love on your team.

    playoff concerns

Guyz and galz, Roenick isn't cutting Cheli, he's just saying that if HE Roenick sticks around to shoot him...it's basically self-deprecation. Also, for those who say 'Hmm didn't know JR was playing this year' etc. he has been a force for the Sharks with something to prove and wears his heart on his sleeve every game, he has proved everyone wrong and is one of SJ's MVPs from a leadership and heart standpoint, Detroit could use a little of that some games.

Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

Detroit needs Havlat, Peca, Foote and McCarty...the Wings have been standing pat for a few seasons, being careful to give up as little as possible, it'd be nice to see them 'go for it' once in awhile and take a chance.

2/15 GDT: Blue Jackets 5, Red Wings 1

Buddy, you don't give up 7 goals on 20 shots over 2 games in under 40 minutes and be anything less than crap, OK? I'm pretty sure there's no one here suggesting Osgood has been "outstanding" this month. And your suggestion the Hasek's and Osgood's play has been comparable is an absolute joke, "he has still lost games just like Oz has been." Wrong. In February Hasek is 2-0-1 allowing 5 goals with a shutout. Osgood is 1-4-0 in allowing 16 goals (yes 16 GA in less than 4 total games) against and pulled twice. And you are pretending they are comparable?! Edit: But yeah, Hasek def needs to "pick it up"...btw this is a completely unbiased post as anyone can see, this is not a case of fandom, more a case of reality.

Unfortunately there's more to goaltending than just looks, that's why these slick butterflyers aren't leading the league in goals against like some. hint hint

Last 3 games for each: Osgood 9 GA Hasek 5 GA Neither of those are bad, defense is a team sport, five goals up in the LA game but it happens.

2/9 GDT: Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)

Great, OK, I just meant 'man' as in 'person', as in a conversational address such as 'dude' or 'you', and I didn't miss the point, your point was 'why not go straight to the playoffs' and I said, 'yes, let's do that, so long as the Wings are there' as it is a rite of spring for them to nab first spot at least in conference. When that stops being a regularity people can start worrying about the regular season again and recognizing it as anything more than a period in which to minimize injuries and exertion.

2/9 GDT: Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)

God man, the games aren't meaningless for Washington or Boston, but for Detroit they are. They play 82 games to suck the dollars out of blue collar fans wallets, that is it. It really doesn't matter how many games, maybe after a 150 game season, the Caps would make the playoffs. Maybe after a 40 game season, the Islanders would. It's completely trivial, the owners want as many games to make as much $$ as possible, clearly. Detroit is going to make the playoffs, they are going to win the division, probably the conference. They would likely do this in a 20 game season, just as they would in a 200 game season, therefore the games are meaningless. Is all I meant. Bring on the post!

2/9 GDT: Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)

Facts for clarification's sake: 1. The first goal was just a lucky pinball goal. Those are unstoppable. 2. Only this second goal against Hasek was garbage. He butterflied on a soft Sundin fan and it slid under his right pad, he fell back in an attempt to smother it. However this goal cannot be attributed to Hasek's flopping. 3. On the OT winner, Hasek regained his feet after sprawling on Antropov, check the replay. He was ready for the point shot and initiated a pad stack movement and the shot was tipped over him. This is clear by looking at the camera behind the net, the side action cam makes it look like never got up but he did in fact. Give the guy a break, huh? Edit: BTW I've said it many times, these regular season games are MEANINGLESS.

Best Current Era Red Wing Team

The skate with Konstantinov in 97-98 is an immortal moment in sports, that said, my pick is 01-02. Almost the perfect season. 02 vs. 97(prob. better than 98) for comparison: ...............96-97.........................................01-02 Shanahan-Yzerman-Lapointe.....Shanahan-Yzerman-Holmstrom Kozlov-Larionov-Fedorov............Robitaille-Larionov-Fedorov Maltby-Draper-McCarty..................Maltby-Draper-McCarty Kocur-Brown-Sandstrom...............Devereaux-Datsyuk-Hull Lidstrom-Murphy............................ Lidstrom-Olausson Fetisov-Konstantinov......................Chelios-Duchesne Ward-Rouse..................................Fischer-Dandenault ..................................................................Slegr Vernon-Osgood...................................Hasek-Legace The only diff. for the 98 team is Macoun, Eriksson, Gilchrist and Holmstrom replacing Konstantinov, Sandstrom, Brown (who split time with Gilchrist), Ward, and of course Vernon gone.

    Hasek and Chelios

If you're going to make a joke about it, at least quote him right. He doesn't say, "That doesn't mean I have 1 or 2 or 3 beers with dinner," he says, "Before I could eat chicken wings and pizza and cheeseburgers as much as I could, and now I care what I eat. I don't go to McDonald's. It doesn't mean I don't ever have pizza or have one or two or three beers for dinner, but I always am careful. I think what I am doing and try not to eat too late in the evening. These are the things what you have to change if you want to stay in shape at my age." Meaning, yes, he does have three beers with dinner...

By Osgood?!? 3 goals against on 24 shots...I think not, Legace had a pretty marvelous outing. If I were Kenny Holland, I would be looking around for what I could get for Osgood while his market value is at its highest. Did someone say, Ryan Malone?
  17. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2007...nhls-star-week/ I wonder if the people who choose these look at shot totals...I think the Dom had about 50 total in 3 games.

    Hasek Challenges, Gaborik goes Airborn

Some of the uproar into this stems from the fact that Lemaire and others have suggested an "intent" to injure. That would indicate this being an isolated occurrence, which of course has been disproven by the recollections of any fans who witnessed last season for Dom and beyond, an occurrence in which Hasek saw Gaborik bearing down and thought, I am going to hurt this guy by taking out his legs. Mmmmmmhm. I was randomly viewing some games from my Hasek gametape archive, hundreds of games worth. This particular afternoon I took in three games from Dominik's 2005-06 season with Ottawa. The games were early December 2005 vs. Los Angeles, Florida, and Vancouver. Keep in mind this was random viewing. In the LA game, Hasek came out and used the Gaborik play to foil a King, which player I can't recall, saving a goal on the breakaway. In the next game 6 days later, Hasek used the Gaborik play to prevent a Joe Nieuwendyk breakaway goal. He almost missed, but disrupted Nieuwendyk enough for Joe to miss the net on the backhand. In the next game against Vancouver, he came sliding out on a Sedin breakaway, dropped his stick accidentally while skating, knocked the puck away but the other Sedin twin picked it up and scored. Later in the game, Hasek came out the same way to successfully this time break up a Todd Bertuzzi breakaway. Bertuzzi and Hasek both were shaken up after this collision, although both returned to play immediately. Late in that game, another long breakaway pass had Hasek racing out, but the pass missed the receiver and went deep into the zone behind the net, with Hasek 3/4 of the way to the blueline. That is 5 attempts on 5 breakaways in 3 consecutive games, stopping 4/5 breakaways. Just thought people would be interested.

    Hasek Challenges, Gaborik goes Airborn

Anyone see these quotes on the play by Dom...? They almost seem misquoted as it doesn't seem like Dom to tout himself on anything: -------------------------------------------------- Over his career, Dominik Hasek has made hundreds of similar saves on opposing players coming in on a breakaway. But the one me made on Minnesota' Marian Gaborik admittedly was his best. "This one was definitely the best I've ever made," Hasek said after Saturday's practice. With the Wings leading 5-0 and less than three minutes to play, Gaborik found himself on a breakaway. Hasek met Gaborik a few strides over the blue line, slid on his side and took the Wild's leading scorer's feet out, flipping him in the air and onto his back. After the game, Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire felt Hasek deserved an attempt-to-injury match penalty. "I don't know what he is talking about," Hasek said. "It was the cleanest check. I got the puck first. (Gaborik) has to be aware that I can come after him and poke check him. I'm glad nothing happened to him. "This one was probably, no not probably, this was the best one I've ever made," Hasek said. "It was his fault. He kept his head down. He's got to be aware. I didn't go after him. I wen after the puck and then after he tripped over me and made a summersault." --------------------- Weird...it was a good play Dom but you've done just as nice a slide tackle other times. So weird.

    Hasek Challenges, Gaborik goes Airborn

No two ways about it? You're apparently clueless when it comes to what actually occurs on the ice...I can tell you from experience if you do this move with just your arm, not only are you chickening out from body contact (not giving a full save effort), you are far far far more likely to miss the player altogether, miss the puck, etc. resulting in a goal. When you are charging the shooter, you run straight at him and then dive with your hands whichever way he tries to deke around you. If he doesn't change course you just go right into him/the puck. So you see, it is physically inconvenient to plot an indirect course to the puckcarrier purely for the goal of "sliding with your arm" and not your whole body. Keep in mind the importance of a shutout in the mental aspect, Hasek has been maligned by the fans and media and even one goal allowed in a 19 shot game is enough for people to write off his performance. It becomes a matter of pride and confidence when you can boast a shutout, b/c then who knows how many shots it would've taken to score. Give up one and it's, "Who knows how few shots it would've taken for 2?" This isn't pee wee hockey, Gaborik is a 200 lb man barreling to the net at 20mph, Hasek coming out at a comparable speed...there is going to be a collision, you need to hit the guy with your pads or at least your chest pad or stick...hitting him with your arm will just result in a bruise or injury. Make up your minds people! You skewer Hasek for risking injury, but he tries to protect himself. He tries to protect himself, he should've given Gaborik a break. This is a legitimate play that has been used by DH for 15 years time and time again to almost universal success, what is the problem?

    Hasek Challenges, Gaborik goes Airborn

    1. An old measuring stick still used today? The ref just blew the call...the way Gaborik flew through the air spooked him and he though he'd better make a call just in case the league "felt something" about the "hit". The way players are getting hit today, anytime someone is injured there is a major penalty called whether the play was legal or not, first Bettman and the higher ups think goalscoring is the reason no one cares about hockey, and then it has slowly become because it is too violent. Certainly the respect issue is one thing but this play by Hasek is color for the sport and trying to curtail it is just another step in making hockey, to put it mildly, boring. Although could anything have been more boring than the first two periods plus of this stupid game? Nope. 2. I was just comparing it to a pokecheck. Once you start drawing lines all the creativity is taken out of the game. See: trapezoid behind the net. If you say the goalie can pokecheck, BUT NOT TOO MUCH, then there will be problems. The way the game has always been is, a goalie does what he can to stop the puck, anything that happens as a result is moot. Players fall over him, oh well. Gaborik dies from a broken neck, oh well. This is hockey, not ping pong, it is a contact sport occuring at breakneck (literally) speed and the result is collisions. Sometimes concussions result...other times players just fly through the air. There is no debate. Edit: BTW, yes, you should be afraid to play against me...I have used this play before to great success.

Hasek to Dominate 'Canes...Ozzie will own Preds

OK, stay with me here. If the goalie prevents a goal on a breakaway, with a pokecheck, save, whatever, does it really matter? The goalie has "stopped" the breakaway goal chance, whether he actually had to stop a shot or just prevented a shot being taken. The only rules are the rules made by the players, there's no rule that says the goalie must face the shot if he can personally prevent the shot being taken. Hasek got the puck first, so it doesn't matter. It wasn't a hipcheck, or even a check, he slid into the puck, like a slide tackle in soccer. Or...gasp...a pokecheck in hockey. This is still a contact sport, correct? That allows for some incidental contact or otherwise? Why don't you take a look at some highlights from the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals, you can see Hasek doing this same move on Kevin Stevens. That's 15 years ago for you math experts.

    Hasek Challenges, Gaborik goes Airborn

Puck first is the rule...whether it be stick or body. What happens to the player after isn't supposed to matter. Anyone on this board ever hear of a freakin' pokecheck? You know, where the goalie shoots out his stick/blocker, knocks the puck/player away? This thread is so dumb.

    Best players ever?

Aside from the fact that it is silly and impossible to compare players of vastly different eras (due to the disparity in systems, fitness, equipment, etc.), I'm pretty sure there are precious few people posting lists that have actually seen the players they are ranking play. Sure, proclaim Terry Sawchuk the best goaltender ever, you've seen five clips and some golden oldies cling to the belief that the keeper of their era bests those from their kids', that's all you need, right? I think it's so absurd to rank players you're not familiar with on reputation alone, no doubt SOMEONE on here has seen some of these greats of the past, but come on...how many 60-70 year olds browse LGW.com? Not many I'd guess. Here's my lists of players I've actually seen and been familiar with: Forwards: 1. Lemieux 2. Yzerman 3. Messier 4. Neely 5. Gretz 6. Jagr 7. Hull 8. Selanne 9. Bure D: 1. Niklas 2. Bourque 3. Cheli 4. Craig Ludwig G: 1. Hasek 2. Roy 3. Marty 4. Richter

    12/4 GDT: Red Wings 4, Canadiens 1

3-2 Canadiens victory, you heard it hear first, I took my time machine for a spin tonight and it was not a pretty sight. The Wings scored first, Montreal got all their goals in the second period, shots were 31-22 in favor of Detroit. And Hasek stopped a breakaway! But they still lost. Let the inappropriate Hasek premature retirement urging begin.
