They could have kept Nylander (who's a lot better than Gomez), and still signed Drury. Gomez got more money then Nylander ended up getting from Washington anyways. As for their defense: Tyutin is the Rags best defenseman. He also has the most potential of being a top defenseman out of anyone on their current roster. Rozsival is pretty good. Mara is good offensivly, but terrible defensivily. Malik is a dinosaur. He's what you'd call an "old NHL" type defenseman. He played a lot of his game based on clutching and grabbing because he's a bad skater. Strudwick is a good, physical veteran. Girardi has potential. So does Pock. In short, the Rags defense isn't plain awful, but it still is something to be desired. Right now their top defenseman are either Tyutin, Rozsival, or Mara. None of those three guys are top defenseman calibre: their good #3-4 guys, but that's it. The rest of their defense either consists of #5-6 guys like Strudwick, or rookies like Girardi and Pock. And of course, there's still Marek Malik. Their problem is that they don't have a true top defenseman. Some of those guys are capable, like Tyutin. But right now they are not at that level. Who's to say that they can't be? They probably can. We'll wait and see what happens when the season starts.

Everyone, I have an announcement to make. motorcitykid is a ranting ******* who's full of s***. I don't mind bashing Holland, since I do it all the time myself. But when the guy comes on here and ******* like he can do a better job, yet still hasn't named any players that should be signed, then anything he says shouldn't even be looked at. And, you still haven't answered my question that I've asked you about 5 different times earlier in this topic: Since you know so much, who do you feel is a person the Wings should sign? Note here that I don't expect an answer out of this at all, just like before. I'm just proving my point that motorcitykid is only here to *****, and not provide suggestions himself. You can say "top 6 forward" all day long until you turn blue, but until you actually provide a reasonable answer for the problem (and not some stupid s*** like Hudler, Meech, and Lilja for Iginla), everything you say will mean absolutely nothing, and just shows what an ass bag you are. edited for grammar

If you're implying that Quincey will fight people, please don't. I've never seen him drop the gloves.
-
Actually, he wouldn't. Depending on the so called "interest" of some Russian teams, he could have the opportunity to make more money in Russia. I suggest that he thinks along those lines, and get's the hell out of here. Then there will be no chance of him playing for the Wings. There was no actual free agent signing that did that though, was there? I thought it all blew up because Hitchcock and Robert Esche didn't like each other, and Hitchcock left Esche in goal for all 9 goals scored against the Flyers in their 9-1 loss to Buffalo. But I see what you mean though. Yashin could ruin the whole thing single-handedly. Better off not taking the risk and just forget he even ever existed. edited for spelling

Good idea. Sigh... that's only wishful thinking though. Not to turn this into a "Bettman sucks" topic, but seeing as though he's the one who initially changed the format to begin with, it's pretty strange to think he would be the one to change it back. These divisional matchups will be as boring as they are every year. I almost shudder to think how dead the Joe will be in March, with these Tuesday night matchups against Columbus and Nashville. Ugh.

Visnovsky is a good player. Good deal for the Kings. Their still not a playoff team yet, though. For some reason they still seem to believe that Beachball is going to be the one to backstop them to a Stanley Cup.
-
That's funny. Someone called him a loser. Hopefully it was Holland. Then we know there is no chance of him coming here.
-
Show me. If it's true, then that's good news. The Wings will then be able to sign another defenseman, and not give Lilja the #6 spot.
-
I'd rather play McCarty before Kopecky. Regardless, McCarty can't play anymore. He's been having a hard run in with injuries the past few years. He'll probably just decide to hang up the skates next year.
-
How would Orr get a roster spot before Hossa? Talk about a dinosaur on skates. Still one of my personal favorite fighters though!
-
His agent is probably one of the biggest losers in hockey.
-
So Scott Gomez gets a 7 year deal, while Lundqvist (who's cleary better and more important to that team) gets only a 1 year deal? I don't forsee the Rags even making the playoffs. Sure, they made a bunch of high priced signings. But they also opted to choose Gomez over Micheal Nylander. The real problem with that is Nylander and Jagr were good friends and had chemistry. Now Jagr is upset that Nylander is gone (he even went public about his displeasure). An unhappy Jagr is only the first step for bad things to come. It'll all come crashing down from there.

Unless he really has a great training camp (and do emphasize the word "great"), Quincey is headed back down to GR. Since he can go to the minors without clearing waivers, that is where he'll go. Derek Meech will be the 7th defenseman. As in that case, his 4 career NHL games don't warrant him a spot over anyone in the current lineup. Since the real situation here is Lebda vs. Meech, I'd much rather keep Lebda.

That depends on how these teams are doing at that point. You know, St. Louis or Columbus could (very unlikely though) pull a Pittsburgh and really turn themselves around next season. Like I said, it's unlikely. But for the sake of having some competition in the divsion, let's hope one of them does.

I liked them both too. Ysebaert was one of my favorite players on the Wings back then.
-
Yep, that's right! I was wondering if anyone would get Chevrier right. Oh, definitly. I think Racine is actually still playing in a senior league in Quebec. Bring him back and pair him up on defense with Bobby Dollas, and put them out with a line of Paul Ysebaert, Kevin Miller, and Jimmy Carson, and that line looks pretty good.
-
Ahaha, I must say I'm shocked to hear this! Good riddance. I'll be able to sleep at night again the day I know Alexei Yashin will not be a Red Wing.
-
Haha, figures. They do this every year with the Conference finals rematch. Just like last year with Buffalo - Carolina. Oh well. Bring it Anaheim. You guys won't nearly be the same team without Neidermayer and Selanne. Schneider and Bertuzzi are pretty piss poor replacements.
-
Jagr? Why? He throws a fit every time someone breathes the same air he breathes.
-
He can hit the road if that's what he wants. I can't believe that he thinks he worth 4 million a year. What exactly did he do that would warrant him that much money?
-
Hell Yeah - You wouldn't know Somewhat of an odd name for a band, but this song is great.
-
Yashin and Fedorov on the same team at the same time? I don't think all the banks in the world could pay the salaries that those two alone will demand.
-
Even if he did sign here, he wouldn't score that many points!
