    Weekend Picks

What the f*** happened tonight? I didn't get a single pick right. 0 for the whole night! Wow! Grrrr...

    Matt Walker

I'd take those other players you mentioned before Walker. I'm not a big Matt Walker fan, but then again, maybe you're right about his fighting. He does take on some of the league's better fighters, so that might not be why he wins. Still, the Wings have a better chance of getting Kovalchuk for Samuelsson straight up than making a trade with the Blues. I don't think it's even worth discussing, because with the Blues in the playoff race, do you really think they'll make a trade with a division rival? No way will they do that. The only way Walker ever plays for the Wings is if he signs here via UFA, or is traded here by some other team, if he signs somewhere else. Of course, all of this will come to pass after Holland is no longer GM because... well... you know...

    Red Wings top trade bait

Yeah, and that was all in a little hot-streak back in late November through Mid-December. What has he done since then? Hudler hasn't scored a goal in 10 games. If he's not producing points, he's virtually useless, and contributes nothing when he doesn't score. If he is scoring, then he's fine, but otherwise, I see no reason for him to be in the lineup. ...and also, he may have more points than Filppula, but is nowhere near the all around player that Filppula is. Filppula is a better player, and can play a defensive role, as well as an offensive role. Hudler can only do one, and lately, he hasn't been doing what he's supposed to. To be honest, I've never been a big Hudler fan. I know plenty of small guys in the NHL have gone on to have great careers (Marty St. Louis, Brian Gionta, Valeri Bure, Cliff Ronning, etc.), but for some reason, Hudler doesn't impress me. The only time I really see anything from him is in the shootout, which he is good in. But, the shootout isn't important enough to keep a guy around solely for that purpose. This season, scoring wise, he's been inconsistant at best. Maybe with more ice, he'd be scoring more, but it's hard to tell. Overall, Hudler is not considered an "untouchable player" because you can find plenty of guys like him, whether it be in the draft, free agency, straight out of Europe (one of those three Swedish prospects, I think his last name was Klassen, has similar statistics and playing style over in Europe), or a variety of other places. If teams want Hudler, there is no reason why the Wings shouldn't give him up, if they can something decent for him. He's one of the players the Wings really can move. Oh, and by the way... I hate Samuelsson, so you don't have to use him in an arguement to support Hudler, or any other player for that matter.

    Zack Torquato

I think that if you get him out of Erie, he could still put up 60-70 points by the end of the season. He's not getting any help in his current situation.

    Red Wings top trade bait

Lebda does not impress me at all. He can skate, but he can't do anything else. He's just another body out there being used to eat up minutes so Lidstrom can rest, if you ask me. The Wings would be better off getting a physical defenseman at the deadline to take his spot, or an all around performer that can play the PP, as well as do other things (such as Brad Stuart, whom is now in my avatar ). I don't think Lebda will be moved, because Babcock seems to like him. His name isn't mentioned in trade rumors, and they seem to happy with what he does (which I don't seem to see), so I don't see him going anywhere at the trade deadline.

    Darren McCarty Progress Thread

Has the idea never crossed you just to have both McCarty and Downey? I mean, what's wrong with that? People's view of only being able to have one enforcer because of the so-called "New NHL" is ridiculous. The Wings had Kocur and McCarty on the 1997 and 1998 teams respectivily, and that didn't stop them from winning. Heck, having those two helped the cause, if you ask me. Downey isn't a very impressive fighter, but I still don't want to see him cast aside for some loser player like Kopecky or Ellis. If McCarty does come back, why not get rid of one of those two instead? They don't do a damn thing in the lineup when they play. Oh, and it's great to hear that McCarty had a good game tonight. Hopefully Holland is keeping watch, and brings him if possible...

Dump Hudler. He hasn't scored a goal in 10 games, and his numbers this season aren't all that great anyways. He's a very one-dimensional hockey player, and if he's not scoring goals, he's pretty much useless. Besides that, I think he's overated to the extreme around here. I remember people even comparing him to Paul Kariya at one point, which I laughed my ass off when I seen that. Great AHL numbers do not always translate to NHL success. Otherwise, Stacy Roest (remember him?), who is the exact same type of player as Hudler, might still be in the NHL... I don't like hearing that Quincey might be traded, because I think the guy has all the tools to become a great defenseman. Same thing with the others like Kindl and Ericsson. Leave these guys alone in the minors, and let them develop. Heck, if the Griffins didn't blow so badly this year, maybe their potential would be showing better, and they wouldn't all be having such bad seasons...

Who's the next sleeper out there?

Which I'm still infuriated about. Battaglia is not a great player, but he's a hell of a lot more useful as a depth forward than Drake or Ellis. Plus, he doesn't make that money, either. I'd like to see Matt Pettinger come in, since he's a decent checking line forward. He would be an upgrade over who we currently have down there, which is what the Wings need.

Players Linked to Wings for Deadline

^^^Tim Connolly is a guy I've been hoping to come to the Wings for a long time, but after hearing about how bad his current injury is, I'm not sure it's a such a good idea. Because the injury was a mis-diagnosis by the Buffalo team doctors, Connolly will require hip surgery once the season is over, which would be a major inconvience to aquire someone who will have to go through that. Still a great player though, and I'd like to someday see him in a Red Wing uniform. He needs to get healthy, though, before that happens.

your top 5 favorite non-red wing players today?

    1. Vinny Lecavalier 2. Brian McGrattan 3. Mike Komisarek 4. Derek Boogaard 5. Mike Fischer For goalies, I'd say Luongo, Kiprusoff, and Dipietro. Honerable mentions go to Ryan Kesler, Eric Staal, Riley Cote, Matt Lombardi, and Nathan Horton.

I just had flashbacks of that guy last season (can't remember his name, but I know he was banned) that was just obsessed with the "Trade Draper" threads. He must have posting at least one a week.

    Matt Walker

It's a very truthful comment that a lot of people don't understand. People look at a guy that can seem to have the credentials for that role, but really doesn't. I remember a couple of years back people on here wanted the Wings to sign Eric Daze because he adds "grit and toughness that the Wings need". Daze may have been an imposing 6'6, 222 pounds in size, but the guy in truth plays like a major puffball. The highest amount of PIM's he got in a season in his entire career was 36, back in 2001-2002. There are players who can rack up that many in a single game, no less. Or, just last summer, people were saying how, if the Wings re-aquired Dandenault from Montreal, their toughness issues would be resolved. Dandenault is not a bad sized guy, and he has a couple of fighting majors to his credit, but in no way should he even considered for playing the tough guy role on this team. I don't know what people were thinking when they said that. There are numerous other guys in the NHL that are the same way: Hal Gill, Nik Antropov, Nikita Alexeev, the list goes on. I could write a book on the amount of guys that people on here have wanted the Wings to aquire going of size alone, not knowing that said player isn't really tough at all.

Walker sucks. He's a bad fighter, which completely takes any value he would have at all, because he's also a terrible defenseman. Besides that, the Blues will probably move to Mexico before they make a trade with the Wings.

    Wings trade Engelhardt

Lemieux's junior numbers are pretty decent (250 points in 272 games with Chicoutimi of the QMJHL), and he's younger, so it looks like he could have some decent potential. LOL!

Yeah, I know 80's night was the reason. Maybe they should hold that event every night, if it means that song won't be played.

    Forsberg rejects Stars, Wings, Flames

Right. Because Forsberg is such a nice, classy guy himself, and we should all wish him the best. He's such a nice guy, and fan favorite in Detroit, and we should all want to see him succeed.

No way. I thought it was all right when it first came out, because it was a novelty item, but the Wings DJ just overplays it to death. I mean, playing after a goal is one thing, but he also plays it during every commercial break. That's just way too much. Hopefully, he's seen the light, and realizes it's a bad song.
