    Weekend Picks

50% today. Ok I guess. I hate Atlanta, though. Just one of many teams that always lose when I pick them, but always win when I don't pick them. Same thing with Carolina and Tampa. The southeast division is so hard to get points off of for some reason. Boo. Hopefully I have a good showing tomorrow.

Don't count on it. The lack of an IIHF transfer agreement means it might be a while before this guy plays for the Wings, or any North American team.

    philadelphia flyers

I'm starting to think you're a closet McAmmond fan. You just love the guy. Just kidding, of course. I'd probably agree with you more on this situation involving the Flyers if it were anyone but Steve Downie. I don't think I'll ever like that guy. Small players who run hiding behind the visor, yet don't answer the bell when need be really aren't guys that I like, and Downie is that type of player. He's like Tootoo, and you know how I feel about him. The other stuff wasn't as bad, except the Boulerice incident. I certainly hope you don't condone that type of play, because that's the most cowardly act I've seen in a while.

    Hockeytown Authentics

Hah, funny we don't see those anymore, yet we still see Little Ceaser's commercials from 7 years ago. I swear, the $5 pizze commercial with the woman naming off all the random holiday's, not believing you could by a pizza that cheap (and quite frankly with Illitch involved, I find that hard to believe also) has been on for so long now. He needs to start making new commericals, because the old ones suck.

I just laughed after seeing your avatar. Just curious: what game was that? I'm going to guess the 3rd home game against Calgary, since that had the smallest crowd to my knowledge, but I'm not sure.

    Euro-Problems

Hardly any. Of course you have exceptions (oh how I wish Vladdy was still playing), but the majority all play the same way: soft. Sorry to all who will accuse that of being a Grapes-esque comment, but it's true. When do you really see European trained players going out of their way to throw a hit or start a fight? Hardly ever, at least from what I see. There are exceptions, like Vladdy and Andrei Nazarov (fight fans like myself remember Nazarov from his days in Boston), but not very many. I tend to notice that North American trained Europeans play more physical. It's just the contrast in style. North American hockey is more of a physical, grinding game, while European hockey is a skilled, stickhandling, not at all physical style of game. This team really does need more North Americans. It's the plain truth. I don't see why there can't be a few more, mainly physical players, considering you have guys like Samuelsson and Franzen on the team, who are both nothing more than streaky depth scorers who, in my opinion, aren't pulling their weight. Don't tell me that would decrease the scoring if we lost those two either, because they both have a whopping combined total of 6 goals between them. Hudler has more goals than both Samuelsson and Franzen combined, and he get's far less ice time. Especially in Samuelsson's case, who get's so much ice time, it's not even funny. He doesn't deserve any of what he get's at all. I know I'm probably going to get shot for saying that about Franzen, since everyone loves him on this forum for some reason (I have no idea why), but I really don't like the guy. For his size, he should be a lot more physical. Plus, he's the most god-awful faceoff man I've ever seen in my life. I can't believe center is his natural postion. He lost almost every faceoff last night. ...and to make one more stab here, the reasons cited in the past of not having an enforcer because "you can't role 4 lines" is more extinct than a dinosaur now. The ZDH line is doubleshifted almost the entire game. If Holland ever uses that excuse again, especially if Downey is lost on waivers or what not, I'm going to go beserk. It's such a lame reason, since every other playoff calibre team seems to manage just fine with 2-3 enforcers in their lineup (Anaheim had about 5 or more last season, and they won the Cup with that many). The Wings are an entertaining team in some aspects. But, I think a more physical team with more hits and fights, and players with actual personality's and not that of a wooden board, would make the Wings more interesting to a certain group of fans, which could put asses in the seats again. I'm only speculating, since there is still the ticket price issue to deal with...
  12. Wow, didn't see that coming. I don't see what this does on a positive note for Anaheim. They basically traded one underproducing salary for another. Granted Weight does make less than McDonald, but he's not really all that cheap. He still takes up cap space that they might need. They would have been better off trading someone else for maybe a draft pick or prospect just to rid their salary. Sean O'Donnell or Brad May come to mind.

    Freep article regarding Violetta

That article made me burst into laughter. Illitch is the most clueless idiot about this situation I've ever seen. It's plain as day that Michigan's ass backwards economy has been going nowhere fast for about 5 years now, and he admits it, yet makes absolutley no attempt to lower ticket prices and charge them at affordable levels. And then, to top it all off, he acts like he has no idea why the games don't sell out! I'm telling you, this guy is becoming more and more of a jackass every day. I'm going to put this very simpily: LOWER THE TICKET PRICES. It's really as simple as that. Hiring Steve Buttf*** or whatever his name is from Nashville isn't going to suddenly put asses in the seats. This guy isn't a household name at all. In fact, it worries me that he's even been hired in the first place. His NHL expierence comes from 3 horribly unstable organizations: Nashville, Pittsburgh, and Ottawa. All 3 were in danger of moving at one point or another in their respective history's, so it possibly seems that Violin doesn't have the savvy business marketing skills that the Wings organization thinks. I could be wrong, and I certainly hope I am, but the numbers aren't making much of a case for this guy. His past history doesn't look too great. It's not just the ticket prices, either. The parking at JLA is a f***ing ripoff. $20 for parking? That's a joke. I remember going to a game back in '96 when I was only 12, and the parking was like $5. With as expensive as everything is down there (food, beer, programs, souvenirs, all of which are highway robbery) you'd think they could compromise and at least keep the parking at affordable levels. But no, Illitch has to continue to squander all the money he can out of us fans to spend on his casino empire (which is not that at all) and his bad tasting pizza. It's really getting old, just like everything else as far as the Wings are concerned. The most frustrating thing out of all is the way he runs the Tigers. It's not that he runs them badly, which he doesn't. He does a great job at running the Tigers. Their a great fan-friendly, affordable team and a great organization. The problem is that he does a great job running one of his teams, but not with the other. I have to ask: why? I mean, I know Illitch is a baseball guy first and foremost, which is fine by me. I love baseball, it's my favorite sport next to hockey, and I'm glad Illitch cares about the Tigers. But, at that same time, I'm getting pissed off over his recent neglecting of the Wings attitude towards the fans, which is downright terrible. It's come to the point that I don't even go to Wings games anymore unless it's right there for me. I live too far away (Bay City is not exactly a stones throw away from Detroit), and I can save the money that I'd spend at a Wings game for better things. I could go to about a half-dozen or more Tigers game, have a great time, and spend about as much as I'd spend as going to one Wings game. It's really not a priority for me to go to these games, because it's too expensive; a lot more than it has to be. I wish Illitch would get it together and fix the Wings problems the right way, not what he's doing now. Cheaper tickets and concessions, autograph signings, fan giveaways, and other stuff like that. It's not asking that much. Considering Illitch can seem to find all this money to fund a large casino and a chain of pizza company's, it's not too much to ask that he does a little for the Wings to make them more fan friendly. If he want's to fix the attendance problem, he could start by doing those things.

    12/7 GDT: Red Wings 5, Wild 0

Good stuff tonight. Downey vs. Fedoruk was the highlight of the game, for me anyways. Downey got in some good shots early, and held in there pretty good. Overall I'll give it a draw. I'll give a slight edge to Downey in the end, mainly because I'm a homer. Nice to see the Fridge dropping the gloves again, on that note. He's slowly rounding back, though he definitly won't be able to take on the heavyweights anymore. He can still be a decent middleweight fighter at this level, since he shows at times he can still handle it. Nice win tonight.

    Brady Vs Manning

Tell me about it. It's like the talent gene was saved only for Peyton. I've watched Eli a few times this year, and he really blows bad. He's extremely overated. There's no debate on the subject of this thread. Brady is far and away much better. Peyton is a great QB, but nothing in the range of Tom Brady.

It's really disappointing to see the Tigers give up Miller. I mean, this guy has so much potential that hasn't even been nearly tapped into yet. Hopefully Miller stays in the NL and doesn't come back to haunt us anytime soon. I can see him being the guy to do so. He's got so much talent. On a better note, you have to give up to get, in which the Tigers certainly did. Wilis and Cabrera are two great additions to this team, and the lineup is looking amazing for the start of next season. We got Rogers locked up now, and now bringing in those two makes it even better, and hopefully everyone stays healthy in the offseason. Really looking forward to opening day already.
