  1. Does anybody have teh mix of The beginning of Dragnet's theme that cuts into Hit the road Jack?

I really have no idea where to start to be able to just make it on my own, although I'm sure it would be the easiest thing in the world to make.

  2. Thats just because America's players are too good for the AHL. If Abby had been there we would have won by 3 :P

Good Point. You're actually right. You got me. This time, there's a point even I can't dispute. so I guess with American players being too good for the AHL, as well as the Euro's as stated above, and Canada's 18-19 year olds being too good for the WJC, I guess it's a wash, and although it's nice when your country represents you well and pulls out a win, neither of these games really count too much in the realm of international hockey.

On a serious note, it was actually a really entertaining game, that Canada won in a shootout. There were no Wing Prospects there.

I just noticed in the Grand Rapids section we were streaming the Griffins games. I've never been able to watch AHL games. Closest I had was when the Vipers played on channel 38? 36? Rick Knickle, David Gorverde, Phil Bourque, Peter Ciavaglia, joe DAy, David Goverde.....Those were some of the names I remember.

    http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/display...rs.php?tmi=5494

all time Vipers Roster. Some names I forgot about, and some names I don't tihnk I ever knew about. Gerard Gallant, Shawn Burr, Tim Thomas, Miroslav Satan.

I remember Samsonov playing here to get used to the North American game, and I remember Pivonka and Bondra playing here during the Lockout.

CaN anybody deny those Jerseys? go ahead.......try it.

  3. Canada Beat the US and the rest of the world in the AHL All Star game 10-9.

It's just another feather in the cap of How far ahead Canada's development system is over USA's. Even with teh Help of the Rest of the World's best minor Pro hockey players, Canada Still beat them. World Junior's are yesterday's News, Canada's back on Top.

  4. The emergence Helm, Eaves, Miller and Abdelkader has made Maltby expendable.

Yup. Happy about everythign he's done for us, but it's time. I have a feeling someone else is gonna want to pick him up, and maltby will move on. It'd be nice to see him retire a red wing, But he's got enough left to help out another team in need of grit, depth and veteran leadership.

  5. The Canadian army numbered in 1944 about half a million men, five-sixths of whom had volunteered for overseas service. Some of it formed most of the force that suffered disaster at Dieppe in the summer of 1942. Some fought alongside Americans and British in Sicily and Italy. But the main military effort of the Canadians began in June 1944 with the landing on the beaches of Normandy, and continued with the fight across France and into Germany

Canada did not receive a cent of lend-lease aid from us. Instead of receiving, she supplied it to the United Nations. The total at the end of 1944 was some 4 billion dollars, which is more dollars per capita than our lend-lease contribution. On the economic side, the war placed a more severe strain on Canadians than on us. The average Canadian citizen paid more taxes and, on the whole, was subject to more rigid controls. He knows what the war cost and, let us be frank, he knew it longer than we did.

    From US written

    http://www.historians.org/projects/giround...da/Canada_6.htm

As with World War 1, Canadians were not only considered expert and professional soldiers, they were feared by the Germans as an omen of impending attack. The Canadian forces were relied upon to provide defence on the high seas and over Britain, and to spearhead assaults for major battles. Once again Canadians had proved themselves on the battlefield and fought ferociously to win every battle they were engaged in. However because "The grim fact is that we prepare for war like precocious giants, and for peace like retarded pygmies"(Lester Bowles Pearson - Men `Zines) we should now try to avoid any other war at all costs because of technology involved today a new World war would destroy humanity.

    - ©James McAllister

    May 15 1998

Early in the war, Canada's commitment to the British-French forces in Europe was limited to one division because Canada's military deployment reached corps-level strength for the invasions in Italy in 1943, and Normandy in 1944. Over the course of the war, 1.1 million Canadians served in the army, navy, and air force. Of these more than 45,000 lost their lives and another 54,000 were wounded.[4] The suffering and the hardships of war affected many Canadians at home and abroad.

Your 40,000 number was canadian Deaths. We had over a million people in the war.

We were a Major part in taking back france and Going into Germany. US Came in when your government allowed Pearl Harbor to get attacked. The Attack on Pearl Harbor Was seen and warned about in plenty of time, not only from US radars, but also from the Australians. It was allowed so the government could show the American public that their country was under attack, and motivate people to get on board with the war and sign up, then later bomb the bejezus outta Japan.

There is also some conspiracy theorists that say the US had a hand in setting up the attack, and wanted an excuse to use their nukes and establish themselves as the Number 1 global Powerhouse. Who knows about that, but the fact is, the attacks were seen coming, and warned about, but allowed.

  6. Get over it. Everybody - seriously, this is ridiculous. I'm a U.S. citizen, but I have family in Canada so I don't take part in bashing the country. All of the points that Don Cherry were making could be 100% valid as far as I know, but it doesn't matter. The way I see it, the NHL and hockey wouldn't be what it is without either country. BUT, Don Cherry saying all that stuff just makes him come off like a sore loser - and that's exactly what the rest of you sound like. Your country lost - get over it. 'Yeah well, Stamkos blah blah blah' - you lost. 'Yeah well, U.S. players play in Canada blah blah' - you lost. None of that matters. Canada beats the U.S. in hockey overall - hands down. Everybody knows that. But Don Cherry or any of you had any class, you would just congratulate the winner and stop making excuses for losing. The simple fact that you are getting so fired up about it only gives the impression that the dominance that you are spewing about isn't quite what your words say. It gives the impression that there is, in fact, an argument here. I think the main point the original poster was making is that Don Cherry is annoying as hell. I'm pretty sure that's what all U.S. (or anyone not from Canada) hockey fan thinks. The reason for that is because he IS annoying as hell. Don Cherry's answer for EVERYTHING is CANADA is GREAT and if something bad happens, it was because come non-Canadian player had the puck. Something good happens 'OOOOOOO CANADA!!!!' - something bad happens 'should have had more Canada.' It is freaking annoying as hell. He may be a 'stand up guy' and help out and all and that's great..... really. But, the guy is so obnoxious on my TV - I honestly do not understand how even you Canadian fans can not completely groan with disdain everytime he shows up on your screen. Put the Canada vs. U.S. aside - it seems like it spouts up at every freaking opportunity.

Wow, Way to Summarize how the rest of the world feels about 2 thirds of the americans on TV that are the Same way. 66% of american is exactly this way. We've got 1 guy.

Why do I Capitalize random words?

    don't know, habit.

Canada does have an inferiority complex. Especially when comparing itself to America. It's not the US's Fault, it's ours. Don's point is that we should be proud of who we are, and what we've done, and the fact is, not many Canadians really know all that much about what we've done. Canadian history isn't nearly as emphasized in Schools as American history. Canadian Pride isn't taught/bred over here nearly as much as it is over there. It's not your fault.

How many people even know about the War between Windsor and Detroit? in the 1800's Detroit was constantly attacking and trying to take over Windsor/Sandwich through Amherstberg. We defended time and time again, stationing at fort Malden.

These Battles were not covered at any school I went to. Were they covered in Detroit schools? Probably not, because It was a battle that Canada won. I live right next to this great, historical battle field....you'd think the schools around here would make a bigger deal out of it.

I'd imagine that when you guys in the US Study World War 2, the main emphasis is on The US's involvement, and you're pretty much told the war was going on, and then US came in, swept up, whooped some ass and won the thing.

In Canada, we spend equal time learning about hte cause of the war, the background behind it, the involvement of Every Country, and about every battle.

All Don cherry tires to do is to tell Canadians, you live in a great Country, get your head up and get over this inferiority complex we have. He wants us all to Wave a Canadian Flag in our front lawn, get behind our own military, and have the mindset that we live in the Greatest country in the world.

Kind of sounds like the philosophy of someone very close to us.

You wanna know why the world hates US so much? Because Everytime someone turns on American TV, all they see is one American Don Cherry after another. Now you know what it's like to hear someone from another country talk about nothing other than how they're the Greatest country in the world.

I personally don't hate America. I love living in Windsor, just so I can go over the border and Go to Wings/Lions/Tigers games. I love that I'm close enought to get all the American TV channels. I wish out country was as patriotic as yours. I love the 50 different Identities all of your states each have. I love going down to Texas and Seeing the Texas Pride everyone has. I love going to New York, and seeing the New york Pride that everyone has. I also love when someone from My Country shows that Same Pride in My Country.

  7. I don't have too many issues with Grapes. However, I remember an instance where I took immediate offense to a statement ofhis on one occasion when he diverted from hockey talk on Coach's Corner last season and made an asinine statement of how much better Canadian soldiers were over American soldiers during World War ll, something that never should have been said amongst other reasons that I won't go into that could derail the thread.

He says Stuff like that to try and instill some national Pride amongst Canadians. Canadians generally see themselves as insignificant, as USA's little Brother, and Barely a nation that can stand on it's own. Our navy is the butt of a lot of Jokes. We're gonna send the Canadian navy over to help in Iraq. The Canoe should get there in about 4 months.

Canadians rarely take Canada seriously, and all Cherry tries to do is remind us that we do have our own history, we do have our own identity and we do have lots to be proud of as a Country.

It seems like Every Single American can boast about how much greater they are than everybody else, and if you don't say that, you're not Patriotic. The second someone from another country talks about their accomplishments, they get Bashed.

Can you prove american soldiers were better than Canadian soldiers in WW2? In history classes growing up, did you learn about Canada's involvement in the War? did you learn about the battles we were in, and the battles that were won because of us? I understand US dropped the bomb to end/win the war. I'm not saying either side was better than the other, but before you go and get offended that someone claims that they did more than your army in a certain war, make sure you know all the facts from both sides.

  8. No one added this one? Really? NOBODY? I know we lost that year, but this to me was the beginning of our rise to glory.

    post-12510-1263266338_thumb.jpg

I added the Youtube Video For it. The Image I think of really, is the Shot from Behind Casey, Where you can see where the Puck's headed, and you can See Stevie in his follow through at the blue line.

    that's My Image.

  9. Looking at what the Wings gave up in various trades that were still with the teams they were traded to, or the return from those traded to. This is as of 1998, for both the Wings and trade partners, projected from players involved in the Carson/Murphy deal. Only post-trade NHL regulars will be mentioned.

Keith Primeau, Dean McAmmond and Bobby Dollas for Brendan Shanahan.

Trade partners included Edmonton, Los Angeles, and Hartford. Edmonton and Los Angeles each went to the Cup final immediately after the trade, with Edmonton winning. Detroit went to the Cup final the season of the Shanahan trade, winning that season and repeating the next year.

    Detroit 2, Edmonton 1, Hartford 0, Los Angeles 0.

Jimmy carson Was a 30 Goal Scorer.

Again, In Jimmy D's Autobiography, I'm pretty sure this was the 2nd trade he regretted. But really, They were making a Push for the Cup. Adding 30 Goal Scorer Jimmy Carson, 30 Goal Scorer Tony McKegny, and Bernie Federko, a veteran, and All time Leading Point getter in Blues History, in theory could have been what they needed to get past the Oilers (If anyone Could get past the Oilers)

Things just didn't happen in real life the way they should have on Paper. Maybe Going after Gilmour from St.Louis Instead of Federko and McKegny, for Adam Oates woulda made a Difference, But either way, Jimmy D was making moves that he thouhgt would put him over the top, and trying to do what it took to Win. I respect that.

And I agree with eva up there....Jimmy carson led to Paul Coffey, Which was great, and then led to Brendan Shanahan, Which Led to 3 Cups.

Jimmy Carson wasn't tough enough to be a Real Impact player in the NHL. Jimmy D took a LOT of flack for Taking Joe Murphy ahead of him in that Draft, And Jimmy Carson put up Solid Goal and Point totals up until he left Detroit. Although those trades still do look pretty bad, after all was said and done....they really wern't all THAT bad.

  10. They were the better team that night for sure. You can cry about that all you want. I am sure you will.

    That They Were.

Minnesota was the Better team last night against Pitsburgh. But Today, I'm going to go ahead and Still claim that Pittsburgh Is Better than Minnesota. And In a 7 Game Series, I'm taking the Penguins 100 times over 100

  11. I never Proved there arn't any, I'm just waiting for one. It sounded from his post that he was one, then talked about his Canadian Pride. I don't know where he's from. I assumed he was Canadian.

The "Better" team doesn't always win. If the "Better" team always won, then there would be an 82-0 team in teh NHL each year and a 0-82 team Every year. You can lose to a team that isn't as good as you, and still be better.

Canada is not Better than the US At Baseball.

US is not better than Canada at Hockey.

  13. Does it really have to be about development of hockey players?

USA won at the World JUNIORS because the JUNIOR players from the states are better than the Canadian JUNIOR players.

Don't get it? Junior = the level below pro. The players like Tavares, Myers, Kane, etc. are full-time professional hockey players and therefore are exempt from being junior players. Plain and simple, Americans won and Canadians oughta suck it up.

If a tournament revolving around junior players is representative of development of hockey players (which I don't believe it is) then congratulations to the Americans for being on top of the Hockey World (for now). American hockey is starting to develop better players, and maybe with less talented players too. Canadians live and breathe hockey right? That's why they have more pro players; they've mastered this development of players' skills and such. They obviously have some formulaic way of creating hockey players (called practice practice practice since they can walk) and I may be wrong, but the passion Canadians have for the game of hockey is the reason they're spitting out so many potentially great players. Not saying that the American players don't have passion - as those with passion are the ones who made the team - but they don't have superstar players on the team because they're not practicing every moment from their birth. (a huge generalization, but it's a difference in culture)

The American players that make it to the World Juniors were also players that hadn't quite made it to the NHL level yet. D'Amigo (?) a Leaf draft pick was on the squad and showed some truly solid playing style. None of the Americans in my mind were "superstar" caliber, but neither were the Canadians. The Americans played with more passion, more grit and flat out faster than Canadians in that game.

This is why Americans are getting so much praise - they've IMPROVED - they're not necessarily the greatest hockey nation ever now, but they did take down the team from the country that is. (and that's my Canadian pride at work)

I'm not a hard headed Arrogant Canadian Prick. I'm just Right.

I can admit when someone else can come up with a good point. This is It. I cannot argue that The US Proved to have the Best Junior Players in the World this year.

lol, I was just about to say that there are some intelligent americans that can stay on topic and provide Great counter points. Until I saw that last line......

  14. I can't think of a recent trade that was horrible in the past decade. But the Red Wings traded Adam Oates and Paul MacLean to the St. Louis Blues for Bernie Federko and Tony McKegney back in 1989. So basically they shipped off a 36 goal scorer, line mate of Steve Yzerman, for an out of shape washed up winger, who in turn played 14 games, and was a complete locker room cancer. He wanted the leadership role on the team, but Steve was already the man here. Frustrated , Federko retired after that season. Oates went on to set up Hull and Neely with a great career.

The Flyers also traded Forsberg, Duschene, Hextall a first rounder, plus a couple other players including Chris Simon to Quebec for Lindros. No Cup in Philly, but the Nords moved to Colorado and won the Cup within two years. This deal also set up the Roy to Colorado deal. Because that first rounder that was involved with the Lindros trade, was Thibault. Thibault with two others were traded to Montreal for Roy and Mike Keane. And if you remember Roy had a falling out with Tremblay, Montreal's coach at the time for him leaving Roy in the game when your Detroit Red Wings smoked him and the Habs 11-1 that night in Montreal. So I guess you can say these trades are all just one big circle jerk if you will.

Sorry I went on so long here, I just wrote a blog the other day on this topic.

Jimmy Devellano Made that trade. In His Book, he admitted it was a Bad trade, and one of the only couple that he regretted, but his rational behind it was that Adam Oates Wasn't tough enough to win a Cup with. As you saw throughout the Rest of his Career, Jimmy D was Right. no team Ever won a cup with Oates. You could chalk that up to coincidence, Or, Chalk it up to a man that had a Hand in building 8 Stanley cup Champions knowing what he was doing.

Granted, He should have gotten more out of that trade, But I see His Rational. 2 years in a Row, We made the Conference Finals. Bernie Federko was the all time leading Scorer for the Blues, and Tony McKegney was a multi time 30 Goal Scorer in the 80's. Trade away a guy you don't think you can win with for 2 top 6 forwards, and hope that will help you take the next step.

I think it was a good Idea in Theory, But the players he got back just didn't produce the way he expected. Some times you just get unlucky.

  15. He clearly has an inferiority complex against America. He's like one of those Canadians from South Park. LOL Pretty laughable actually.

Classic American comment. nothing to add, nothing to back yourself up, nothing to do with the discussions, just a drive by empty insult.

When someone beats you with facts, throw out an insult and laugh. Sorry, Us Canadians learn how to handle situations better than this in grade school

    Nuff Said

  16. At this point, I wasn't talking about the US Olympic chances or even Don Cherry, I was just addressing Tane specifically. With respect to Canada in the Olympics, you guys will have all the players and conditions you need and want to play an open tournament without qualifying the result. Yet, he wants to say "Who knows in a 1 game elimination tournament. I think the best way to judge which country is ahead of anyone else, is who's putting the most players into the NHL. Sorry, Canada's the Best." There is no question about the premier level of Canada's love affair with hockey, the cultural integration of the sport, and the individual development of the players, but if ever there was a time and place to show that those players can create the best team in the world, the Olympics is it. It's unfortunate that Tane's national pride would be so severely wounded if Canada were to lose that he has to create excuses beforehand and diminish the importance of the Olympic tournament. You guys really have no basis to be so insecure about hockey.

[and no Tane i wasn't mocking your use of "u"s - I was inserting them out of cultural deference]

    My Point is......

Who's Better at Baseball? Canada? or USA?

I'd say without a doubt, USA.

At the Last World Baseball Classic, Canada Beat Team USA. That doesn't mean canada's Better at Baseball than The US. On that day the Stars aligned and we beat you. In a 7 game series, I'd say we wouldn't have a chance. Or maybe our guys were just meshing at the right time, and US didn't put together the Right team. When Canada beat US, Yeah, It was Sweet, Yeah, we felt good about ourselves, but I hope nobody said that Canadians are now better at Baseball than Americans.

    Same thing In Hockey.

The Red Wings don't win every game, We don't win every playoff series, but over the last 20 years we've shown a level of Excellence that allows us to Say Detroit is the Best Franchise in Hockey. Just because Pittsburgh Beat us last year, by 1 goal, Doesn't mean that they're overall better than us. They don't build a team as well as us, they don't rebuild/retool a team better than us, and they don't sustain excellence as well as us. If the Wings don't win the cup this year, it doesn't mean we're not still the best. If Pittsburgh Wins again this year, and again next year, And stays dominant over the next 10 year or so, they'll have something to say. Until then, it's Still Red wings, and it's Still Canada.

    Sorry.

  17. Though it is just outside the decade qualification, the worst I think was when the Wings acquired Wendel Clark, Bill Ranford, and Ulf Samuelsson. Looked good when it happened, but turned bad since the team did not get past the 2nd round of the playoffs that year

Well, Let's see what we really gave up.

We Got Wendel Clark and our own 6th round pick back (Possibly from teh Shawn Burr/Ben Hankinson Trade? Ben Hankinson, Terrible Trade)

    for

Kevin Hodson and San Jose's 2nd round choice (previously acquired, Tampa Bay selected Sheldon Keefe) in 1999 Entry Draft

Meh. I liked Hodson, But really, we didn't give up much

    Ulf Samuelsson

March 23, 1999 – Traded by the New York Rangers to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Detroit's 1999 2nd round draft choice and the Ranger's 1999 3rd round draft choice. (99 2nd round pick was - David Inman, 3rd round pick - Patrick Aufiero)

Gave up Nothing for Samuelsson's 4 Games with us.

    Bill Ranford

We got him for a "conditional" Draft pick. I'm not going to do the research to find out what that turned out to be. But if the conditions were If he sucks, you don't get much.....they didn't get much.

We Got Chelios For Ericsson and 2 First Rounders.

    (Steve McCarthy and Adam Munro)

think we had a Decent Deadline. Loaded up for the Playoffs. Gave up Nothing. Just like the Lang and Bertuzzi deals....gotta like the Fact that if we have a Chance at the Cup, we'll go out and get the best available players in order to push us over the top.
