    James Wisniewski

Wisniewski committed 18 minor penalties in 75 games last year. If you break down the types of penalties he received it indicates that he does not have a tendancy to commit the same mistake over and over, which can be annoying to watch. Holding the stick: 1 Interference: 2 Slashing: 2 Cross check: 3 Roughing: 3 Boarding: 1 Hooking: 4 High-sticking: 1 High-sticking (Double): 1 Wiz took 8 of those penalties in 32 games for New York (One was for roughing during the 1-6 loss to the Flyers in which 120 minutes were handed out) and 10 while playing 43 games for Montreal (Another one was for roughing in the 2nd period brawl of the 6-8 loss to Boston in which 182 penalty minutes were handed out) Of those 18 penalties, only 5 occured during the last 10 minutes of the game (cross check, high-sticking, high-sticking, hooking, roughing), 1 came after the final horn (cross check) and none during overtime. Three times the opposing team received a matching minor, including the brawl in Boston. Only 4 times did the opposing team score on the ensuing power play (roughing, high-sticking, hooking, hooking) and none of those goals turned out to be the game winning or game tying goal. In fact, the goals that were scored turned out to be mostly inconsequential. One was the final goal in a 5-0 beatdown by the Predators, another was the fourth goal in that 6-1 blowout by the Flyers, another was the final goal in a 5-2 loss to the Penguins. The only one that really had any consequence to it was the go-ahead goal that put the Leafs up 4-3. The game ended 5-4 Leafs. By comparison, Rafalski committed 11 minor penalties last year in 63 games. While Rafalski was great about not taking penalties towards the end of the game, he did take one tripping penalty in OT against Dallas. Loui Eriksson ended up scoring shortly after the penalty expired. The puck also ended up in the back of the net on 2 other Rafalski penalties (hooking and cross check). Also, the majority of the penalties he did take were of the infuriating variety (4 hooking, 3 tripping, 1 puck over the glass). It is worth noting that the only guy Rafalski roughed up this year was Kopecky (That could be seen as good or bad) PS I was bored and couldnt sleep last night, somehow I got stuck on this.

    Let's summarize...

I don't know why people are expecting next years free agent crop to be better than this year. Right now the 2012 FA crop might have 5-10 defencemen I'd like to see play here and at least half of them will be re-signed by their current teams before they ever make it to free agency. If you sign a bunch of stop-gaps to 1 year contracts this year, the only defenceman you'll have signed for next year is Kindl. That could be a recipe for disaster.

You're getting dangerously close to blueadams status with the line combos. Id watch it if I were you.

Forbes article on Salary Cap, NHLPA and the next CBA

I see the light. Thank you I never did understand why they GMs to structure contracts where the cap hit is different than the yearly salary. It never made much sense to me.

Why no team is likely to offer sheet Doughty, Weber, or Parise

I wasn't offended by the information he shared but that he decided to be a smug ******* about it. A public service announcement? Since when did it become your job to school all of us on the CBA? Apparently he and Konnan are the ones easily offended by our ignorance and naiveté since they devote so much of their free time to making sure we understand how futile it is to hope for such things.

Why no team is likely to offer sheet Doughty, Weber, or Parise

Thank god you're around to protect all of us from our own imaginations. Now that this great service has been rendered, why don't you start touring around elementary schools dispelling the evil myths of Santa Claus and the Easter bunny. While you're at it, maybe you can share with them the odds of becoming astronauts, or baseball players, or the president of the United States. Much better that they stop dreaming now than to learn the crushing truth on their own.

    Changes in the offseason

The only problem I see is that if Weber does sign an offer sheet with us Nashville has 7 days to match it. Most of the big name defencemen will be gone by then.

    Holland or Yzerman?

In his first season as GM, Yzerman has taken Tampa Bay from 24th place to 7th place, a 23 point improvement. Under Holland, Detroit has been the winningest team in the NHL and has 3 Stanley Cups to show for it. Right now one team is in the conference finals, the other is playing golf. I know it's not fair to ask which is the better GM at this point, but I want to know who you would rather have as our GM right now.

Brian Rafalski announces retirement after 11 NHL seasons

Am I glad that's he's injured and decided that he can no longer play? No. But seeing as how that is the case, I'm glad that he decided to move on rather than linger around and be a hindrance defensively and financially. The reality is that he can no longer play at the level he wants to be at, so we should be thankful that he made the right decision and happy for him as he moves into a new phase of his life. There's nothing wrong with that.

Brian Rafalski announces retirement after 11 NHL seasons

Thats not my question. Hypothetically, if you signed two restricted free agents from two different teams and owed them both 4 first round picks as compensation, in which order would they receive your picks. Would Nashville get 2012, LA 2013, Nas 2014, etc. Is there some sort of rule about signing as many RFAs as you possibly can and giving up all of your first round picks from now until the rapture?

Brian Rafalski announces retirement after 11 NHL seasons

This just gave me an interesting thought. What if we were to put in offer sheets for Weber and Doughty and both Nashville and LA decided not to match? We would owe both teams 4 first round picks each, but in which order would they get them? Is there some sort of rule in place to limit the number of RFAs you can sign? Otherwise you could just sign a big name RFA each off-season and just be ok with the fact that youll never have first round picks ever again.

    Atlanta Thrashers move to Winnipeg

I see, thanks. What about the players though? I read somewhere that Bryzgalov said he would flat out refuse to report to Winnipeg, that he'd rather go back to Russia before moving to Winnipeg. Is that a common sentiment among players?

    Atlanta Thrashers move to Winnipeg

I dont understand why everyone thinks its such a good idea for Winnipeg to get a team. Didnt they lose their first team due to poor attendance? I also seem to remember reading that players hated playing/living there. Am I way off-base?

Brad McCrimmon will not return for 2011/2012

Great news, but not enough in my opinion. He wasted 3 years of Lidstrom's prime. I think 40 lashes is appropriate.

    Holland or Yzerman?

That's really not the question though. The question is, if you had to choose one guy to be GM right now and into the future, who would it be? In Holland you have a known quantity. He is arguably the best in the world at what he does. Yzerman made some shrewd moves that whipped his team into shape in a hurry, but there's no way to know how long that success is going to last. On the other hand, many people, including Babcock, seem to think that Detroit's window of opportunity is closing and in my opinion, Holland's style doesnt seem suited to making the gutsy calls that could potentially right the ship. edit: clarity

    Are we ready for this?

If the Wings do end up winning tonight it will be an incredible achievement and a great memory for fans. But where it ranks in the annals of Wings' history really depends on how often it happens in the future. If another team doesn't come back from an 0-3 deficit for another 30 years, then I'd put it in the top 5 all time greatest Red Wing moments. But if it starts happening every year it kinda takes the luster off it.

Has the Cheechoo train run out of NHL track?

I think it was just the confidence of playing with Joe. He had 7 goals and 8 assists in 24 games before Joe came to town and 49 goals and 29 assists in 58 games after. It's pretty clear to me where all those points came from.
