Kovalchuck left the ice with a knee injury tonight. He did come back briefly, but left again and did not return.

He wasn't going for the knee the whole time, he was going to check Ilya legally, but then when Ilya moved he tried to still get a piece of him and reached out with his leg and elbow and thats how it happened, he wasn't going for the knee from the beginning, his reflex was just to get what he could, and he happened to catch his knee.
