I just read the article, and it didn't say anything about him clearing re-entry waivers. Only that he cleared waivers and was assigned to the minors. I wonder if this article was written before he was placed on re-entry waivers.
-
He does if he plays more than 10+ games or is on the NHL roster for 30+ days. If they want to keep him to take Toews spot, he very easily could play 10 games as the Hawks has 13 left this month. Also, per TSN. "To fill the roster spot, the club has called up forward Kris Versteeg from Rockford of the American Hockey League. " This was speaking about the roster spot vacated by Toews.

It's true that his salary wouldn't count against the cap if he were to be assigned to the Hawks minor league affiliate. However, he never was. He cleared waivers, was put on re-entry waiver, cleared re-entry waivers, and now is again part of the Hawks NHL roster. I would buy the financial move if he was assigned to the minors. But he wasn't, so this couldn't be a move to save any cap space. The only reason I see the Hawks placing him on re-entry waivers would be because a team had some interest in him, but no one claimed him. Doesn't make sense.
-
What? Are you forgetting he won a Cup? Seriously, Tampa is off to a slow start, but you can't blame that on Torts. He has been playing the last 3 seasons with minor league goaltenders. You can't blame Torts for signing Vinny, Richards, and St. Louis to those huge contracts, leaving little cash for a quality goaltender. Hell, if the Lightning had a middle of the road tender they'd be in playoff contention right now. As is they are 7 points out of 8th. Coaching styles are a preference, but you can't say Torts isn't a winning coach.
-
That's really odd. Regardless if he was in the minors or the NHL, the Hawks would still have to pay him. The half his salary you are thinking about is if any team would have claimed him, they would have had to pay only 50% of his salary, while the Hawks picked up the other 50%. This move doesn't make any sense to me. If they wanted to demote him, then they why would that have brought him back to the NHL?
-
Great example. Torts is ALWAYS emotional. He has a huge smile on his face when Vinny scores a nice goal, and he ******* up a storm when something doesn't go right.
-
Was this on TV? I checked the site, they didn't have anything. If he did clear, I don't understand the move. Why put him on re-entry waivers so soon after waiving him if there wasn't another team to pick him up?
-
In fact, this is quite tame in comparison to some other coaches. Anyone ever seen Bob Hartley? Marc Crawford? Mike Keenan?
-
First off, thanks to whoever makes the wallpapers, I love them. However, I noticed something odd this morning. Look at the puck next to Hanks left hand. Then look at his eyes. What is more interesting than the puck? I would assume this shot was taken during warmups or something. Just thought it was funny...
-
The first time I tried that move, I tripped myself. Luckily it wasn't during a game.

I disagree. From a players standpoint, I prefer an emotional coach. I want to know that he is in the game with us. That the losses hurt him just as much as they do me. Showing more passion for the game is never a bad thing. If anything, that would make me play harder for the coach knowing he is on board with us.

It has nothing to do with conditioning. They actually work out together over the summer. It's a pretty intense training program. The difference is time hasn't been as kind to Blake as it has Cheli.
-
I though it was funny too Again, I'm not 100% on the conditions, but it went something like this. Matthias conditional 2nd round pick - turned into 1st if the Wings signed Bert conditional 2nd round pick - turned into 1st if the Wings went far enough in the playoffs, I think either the WCF or SCF The thing you are missing is that this is Rob Blake. He is a marquee name. Regardless of what his play has been this season, he has the pedigree, just as Bertuzzi did. In fact, Bertuzzi was MUCH more of a risk for the Wings than Blake would be. The biggest reason your proposal wouldn't work is simply that there will be other teams trying to acquire a dman, and if Blake is being shopped, he will be sought after. It will turn into a bidding war. Yes he has a NTC, but that doesn't mean 1. he would waive it to come to Detroit, or 2. he wouldn't waive it to go elsewhere. Bottom line, the negotiation's start with a prospect and a pick and go from there.

He was put back on re-entry waivers on Tuesday, I think teams have 24 or 72 hours to claim him. But I'd be willing to bet if someone wanted him, it wouldn't take too long for it to happen. I'd say we would know by tomorrow afternoon.
-
"Florida Panthers traded Todd Bertuzzi to the Detroit Red Wings for Shawn Matthias, a conditional draft selection in 2007 and a conditional 2nd round selection in 2008." Straight from TSN. Get your facts straight. Now, I'm not 100% sure which conditional pick is which, but the Wings gave up a second round pick when they didn't re-sign Bert. I don't know exactly how it worked out, maybe someone else can chime in here, but if the Wings won a certain about of games in the playoffs, they had to give up a first round pick, if they did, it was dropped to a second. At best, the Wings gave up Mattias and 2 second round picks. Bertuzzi was a bigger question mark than Blake is. Blake would command more than a prospect and a pick.

I think Samsonov just needs to find the right situation. This would be a combination of coach, system, and teammates. I think Detroit's puck possession style, and current roster could be what Samsonov needs to get back on track. I'm not saying the Wings should go out and claim him. Just that I think he could do well here. I don't think he is washed up, he has the skills. He just needs to find the right place to showcase them.
-
It would take more than that to get Blake. Look what it took to get Bert last season. You don't get a player like Blake for peanuts. I think Blake would work, but there are several other players who could do just as well or better who Kenny could acquire for less and would cost the Wings less.
-
I didn't go into the details, but that is more or less what I said. The replica's that fans buy aren't what the players wear. The only way to get what the players wear is to buy the authentic ones, which coincidently cost even more.
-
Let's not forget some intagebles that Blake brings to the table. 1. RIGHT HANDED BIG SHOT 2. Leadership 3. Experience 4. Physical play First and foremost, the shot. There aren't very many right handed dmen with good shots in the league. The Wings have one in Raffy, Black would look pretty nice on the second PP unit with his shot. Second, what hasn't this guy been through or done? Not that this team needs anymore leaders, but could it hurt? Third, again, he been through it all. From playing on bad teams, to winning the Cup. He isn't first timer. Fourth, there is no denying that the Wings don't have a true physical dman. If you say Kronwall, please, go play in traffic. The Wings could really use some muscle in the playoffs. The most physical guy the Wings had last year was Lilja. That's sad. It's really a tough call to bring him in or not. His high salary does turn me off, but then again he is a UFA so the Wings could let him walk. All things aside, if he comes here, I'd be happy. If he doesn't I won't be sad.

The NHL announced that it was going to give teams the option to switch back a couple of months ago. While the decision may have been made, teams would have to wait until the new batch of jerseys arrived. Teams go through 6 sets of home and away jerseys each year (if memory serves me, it might be 8). From what I've read the individual players don't have a say, it's either the entire team or none as far as switching fabrics is concerned. The jerseys you and I can buy aren't the new material anyhow, so this won't reduce the price. The only jerseys made with the new material are the 'authentic' jerseys, and those will always be considerably higher priced than a replica.

That game was actually the final straw added on to what would end up being the end of Roy's career in Montreal. He was later traded to the Avs, and the beginnings to a great rivalry were born.

Keep in mind that Hasek's cap number is only at $4 because of his bonus money paid out last season. He will not hit his incentives this season. That will free up some cap space next season. With the cap raising again next season, the Wings will have anywhere from $7-10 in cap space to work with. They will need to resign a few players, no one huge though. However, I agree, there isn't enough cash to go around for an elite goaltender. Holland will give Howard the opportunity next year to play in the NHL. Whether or not he flourishes as the brass hopes.....

Blake for Lilja? You gotta love the trade proposals on the boards. Hold on while I catch my breath, I've been laughing uncontrollably for the past 10 minutes.... Ok, sorry about that. Now, could Blake do very well here? Yes, as another poster pointed out, the team has a lot to do with your success/failure. Blake hasn't been good this season, but look what he has to play with. Also, keep in mind, if Blake were to come to Detroit, he would be the 3rd dman. He would play 15-20 minutes a night. At his age, that would help him out tremendously. As for what the Wings would have to give up to get him, far too much. Kenny could do just as well for less somewhere else.

I hate when the talk goes to 'fire bettman'. Do you guys realize that Bettman is just a figurehead? He doesn't make any real decisions, he does what he is told to do. If you are upset with the way the game has changed under Bettman, look no further than the owners. They tell Bettman what to do, and he does it. Otherwise, he would be fired. Back to topic, I'd love to rewind time and tell Vladdy and co. now to get into the limo. :: The Wings have never filled his void. He was so great to watch.
