Burnside breaks down the WCF and picks the Wings in 7
Mickeyisms Rule! replied to Frozen-Man's topic in General
Considering that Ozzie's GAA is 1.52 in the playoffs and Turco's is 1.73, add the fact that Ozzie is 6-0 in the playoffs, I beg to differ with your assessment of the goalie "goodness" in this series. If anything, I would rate it a push. -
See? Even Holland Thinks Grigs is Fat and Out of Shape
Mickeyisms Rule! replied to Hank's topic in General
Grigs had 4 goals and 6 assists with Ufa Salavat Yalayev in the RSL in 27 games. He is only 5'10" and tips the scales at over 200lbs (a soft 200lbs). I'm glad they're done with him. -
What's to stop Chris Chelios from running onstage and just stealing the Masterton?
-
It kind of looks, from recent past winners, that the Masterton has become the "get horribly injured or get cancer and come back to hockey" award. If this is the case, the Chelios would never stand a chance to receive it. I guess being an ageless cyborg has its disadvantages as well as its advantages.

I watched a good chunk of the Dux game last night and it really looked like the Dux are a one-trick pony. They approach every game as "We are going to be very physical and dominate the other team, just like last year." Unfortunately for them, their special teams weren't up to the task of killing the penalties and they let their frustration shine through in the end. I don't think Dallas will sweep, but to be honest if Anaheim doesn't turn it around in a hurry then they will be playing golf in less than a week.

In order to keep Quebec French, they will now be slapping each other across the face with their glove (or trapper if it is Roy) and duelling at dawn with the rapier. In case of cowardice, they will also have the option of going to the bench, grabbing a towel, waving it about and surrendering. This will result in a 2 minute penalty for the person surrendered to for vol à main armée (thuggery).

3/27 Update: Samuelsson has groin issue, Filppula ready
Mickeyisms Rule! replied to 40#1Fan's topic in General
You must be new here. We acknowledge the term "Mule," however he has earned at least 2 other nicknames: "Franzenstein" (make him green in Phoshop and put some bolts in his neck) and "The Franz" think Happy Days, The Fonz I wonder if anyone has those pics around that they can post again. Those were great last year. Ah here's one (let's see if it works) -
I would imagine that Drake plays Friday as he is being honored by the Wings for his 1000th game played.

Now wait a minute, here! The goalie apologists here say that smaller pads won't change the GAA because these guys are so damn good! How is it that you think that GAA would go to 6 or 7? Even during the crazy 80's the GAA for the Vezina-winning goaltender never got above 3.5- and you guys keep saying that the goalies nowadays are much better athletes and better goaltenders, positionally than those guys ever were. I'm not saying that they have to play in the same pads they used 20 years ago, but having them approaching the same size would be a great start. Of course they will be made of new fabrics, so they will be lighter weight, yet more protective of the goalie. They will also allow them a bettr freedome of movement. I saw in an article (can't remember exactly where) that if they shrunk the goalie equipment by one-half of an inch in all directions, that it would make 2.3 square feet of net available where a goalie used to be. (for non-US and Britain, that is shrinking the equipment by about 125mm in all directions, making about 2000 square cm open for shooting). That's quite a lot of net that opens up for the puck to hit, but it really isn't a large change in the size of the pads. I love an incredible save as much or more than the next guy, but there aren't anywhere near the number of those kind of saves in the games today as there was even 10 years ago. Much of the excitement in hockey is knowing that someone can score at any time and seeing the goalie squash it. The feeling now, though, is that they have very little chance to score, and the goalie usually beats himself. In 1981, the average goals scored per game in the NHL was 8.03. In 1998, it was 5.27, and in 2006 (the last time I can find the total because I need to go to bed) we were up to just over 6 per game. I grew up watching hockey in the late 70s and 80s. The game was much more exciting. Come to the Dark Side... we have cookies!

Nice way to dredge up a dead thread, but to respond, I have never seen a game between the 88 Oilers and the 74 Golden Seals on the NHL network. I had no idea that they could play a game between teams that were 14 years apart, but I will keep my eyes peeled for that one. Just where does your anger come from here? Yes. Goalie pads have been increasing in size for the past couple decades. It is hard to tell whether the goalies got better or not. Why don't we put them in the size pads that Plante and Sawchuk used to wear and find out for sure? Just what is it that they are afraid of?

Cheli is Darth Vader. Don't forget that we are the most hated team in the NHL- so we must be the Empire, not the Republic. Kinda throws a wrench into your ideas of the Wings as a force for good, doesn't it?
-
Errrr... have you ever heard of sarcasm? You haven't even been on the board for a month yet and you are chastising the regulars. Way to make an impression.

You really should read the first post again. He DID Google it. To my knowledge, he didn't wear his number 19 in all star games, but I have been known to be wrong.

heh.. you may also want to change the "From" line in your account. Somehow I don't think that "I'm from the streets, b****h!" is quite appropriate.

Technological advance usually has the result of something smaller performaing as well or better than a larger, heavier item from the past. Take for example the flak jackets worn by our troops. In 1970, in VietNam, the flack jackets we wore were made of overlapping layers of steel and they were heavy- about 35 pounds heavy. They did a good job of stopping stray rounds but an AK47 could penetrate them fairly easily from inside of about 100 feet. Fast forward to today, where the flak jackets are made from Kevlar, weigh about 50% of the old ones, and can stop an AK47 bullet from penetrating from 20 feet. On top of it they are thinner than their 1970 couterparts. So from the example above you can see that the technology has advanced enough so now there is a lighter version of the old version that does a better job. Now look at hockey goalie pads- they have gotten lighter and are made from better materials, but they have ALSO increased in size and coverage area since the 80's. So now, they don't just do a better job of protecting the gaolie, which is what they are supposed to do, they do a better job of protecting the netting behind them, which is what the goalie (not the pads) is supposed to do.

Crossing the line? Do you have the NHL network? Check out some classic NHL and tell me if the goalie's pads are as big as they wear today. You can't tell me that the size of the pads don't make a difference. Watch Giguere, or Patrick Roy when he was playing in the mid 90's and you will see that they barely even move to make a stop. Also pay close attention to where the puck hits them. In the chest= goo sound positioning. Off the outer edge of their shoulder or defelcting off the edge of a trapper = oversized equipment, You calling us crazy is rich. You already admitted that you play or played goalie, so you've already announced to us that you are crazy.

As long as he wears the Winged crest on his jersey, I will be a fan. I cheer my team for what they do right, and don't bash them for what they do wrong. It is merely, "an opportunity for improvement." I see many opportunities for the above poster.

So... what do you think about him after the game saver block now? Do we get to keep him? Mom! Can we?

Yahoo is streaming the video with Ken and Mick announcing. Complete with commercials! woowoo?

They may send some players there, but with Flint and Grand Rapids as affiliates for the ECHL and AHL, I'm not sure hom many more prospects they have available.

I have a tendency to believe a hall of fame defenseman more than I would believe the people in this thread asking, no, demanding Lilja's head on a platter. Fact 1: Lilja blocks more shots than anyone else on the team. Fact 2: Lilja, when he plays his role, is as good a denfenseman that you will find for the pay Fact 3: The puck that got shot over the boards last night was rolling, plus he was in the process of going down from a check when he shot it over the boards The people here that are crying about this play should be more angry that there is no wiggle room in that rule. When a defenseman is falling because they are being checked there should be an allowance made on the delay of game rule. At this time, the refs had no choice but to call the penalty. If this had been a time before that rule was put into effect, then you all would be praising Lilja right now for staying with the puck and getting it out of trouble. Try this: (those of you that don't own a hockey stick may need to borrow one) draw a line on the ground, place a puck on the line on its edge and try to get the puck to go straight down that line. Try it on your forehand first, then move to your backhand (Lilja was on his backhand). Now, ask your large-sized friend to run into you at full speed while you try to keep that puck on the line that you drew from your backhand side. Post your results so we can laugh at you and tell you how much you suck.

I love it. The last 2 games the Wings have given up exactly 1 (ONE) goal. You can't tell me that the defence has been playing THAT poorly- especially with LIDSTROM, KRONWALL, RAFALSKI, and now CHELIOS all gone to injury (and yes I have watched the games, Agalloch). We have the 2 top scoring defensemen down right now. Of course the offense isn't going to be as good!

I'm all for 1-0 games when it is the goalie making the saves and not his oversized shoulder pads, trapper, and leg pads. When you see a 90+ mph come in and hit a goalie squarely and he doesn't know it hit him, the pads are too big. Its kind of like when you drive down the road in one of those big boats of American cars from the mid 70's. You don't get any kind of road sensation, because they went too far with the power steering. Right now the goalies have gone too far with their pads because they can. Its like Patrick Roy said the day he retired, "You can make pads smaller now."

Just think! If they actually succeed in shrinking the equipment, Samuelsson would be a 50 goal scorer!
