Goalie equipment has been vastly improved since the old days. I can remember an old leather pair of pads that I had that would get so waterlogged by the end of a game that I could barely move my legs. If you are going to make the skaters go back to old equipment then the goalies should have to wear old pads as well- oh and no helmet, just the Jason mask. All equipment has improved, often so far that you can get superior protection with smaller size. In fact, since the goalie equipment technology has improved so much it should have been getting smaller, not larger.

While I agree that goalies as a whole have improved, how about letting them prove it? Put them in comparable pads and equipment to the goalies of old; they can use all the new materials they want, but the size needs to be the same. When a goalies leg pads stick out 5-6 inches past his leg on each side, that isn't for safety (unless you think the twine needs to be kept from feeling pain). When a goalie's arms look like a little kid in a snowsuit, that isn't for safety either. If the goalies think they need all those pads to feel safe, then they are welcome to retire. Homer stands in front of the same shots they do, and all he has is clamshells on his lower leg. If goalies say they don't need all those pads to be good then they can go to the smaller pads and not get any worse, right? I don't believe it.

QFT It is the goalies that have taken advantage of the rules and the lack of enforcement here. Luongo looks like a rice-burning street racer with all the attachments he wears. I half expect him to have a park-bench style spoiler on his ass when he comes out one of these times.

Eh, passion of the moment- but watch the replay. I see a butt-end of a stick right next to Lidstrom's eye- pretty sure it made contact (I'm at work and sitting a long way from the TV). It was not a clean hit. This may also have something to do with the fact that Laperriere always looks like the guy that gets away with everything because he always has that "who me?" look on his face.

Are you watching the same game we are? He left his feet, he had his elbows and the butt-end of his stick in Lidstrom's face, and Lidstrom hadn't touched the puck yet. So tell me again how clean the hit was?

Anyone that thinks that Downey will play in the playoffs had better get their heads checked. Bring up Mac and see how Mr Drake is feeling. I love the guy, but he hasn't really been much of a contributor in games this season. Half the time I am surprised when they mention his name at the end of the games because the guy has been invisible. If there is anyone that DMac would be replacing on this team for the playoffs it would be Downey. Regular season he would most likely take Drake's spot.

I hate when this subject comes up, brcause I still have a signed pic, puck, and trading card of his hanging just above and to the right of my computer desk. I guess I never bothered to take it down, justifying it as Red Wings memorabilia, but whenever this comes up I look at the plaque it is mounted on and wish for The Return. Would it be cool? Hell yeah. Will it happen? Doubtful, but a boy can dream, right?
