NHL Preview from The Sports Network Monday, December 10th (All times eastern) Detroit Red Wings (21-6-2) at Nashville Predators (14-11-2), 8 p.m. (Sports Network) - The red-hot Detroit Red Wings will aim for a seventh consecutive victory when they visit the Nashville Predators tonight in a Central Division battle at the Sommet Center. Detroit, which leads the NHL with 44 points on the year, is in the midst of its second longest winning streak of the season. The team won nine in a row from October 18-November 9. The Red Wings picked up their sixth straight triumph on Sunday, as they defeated the visiting Carolina Hurricanes at Joe Louis Arena. Andreas Lilja scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Detroit continued its home dominance of Carolina with the 5-2 victory. Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom scored 36 seconds apart late in the third for the Red Wings, who haven't lost in the last 14 home games to the Carolina franchise. Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen scored for the Red Wings, who also got three assists from Jiri Hudler and two helpers from Nicklas Lidstrom. Dominik Hasek made 15 saves in the win. Datsyuk extended his points streak to eight straight games. He has eight goals and seven assists during the run. The Predators won for the third time in five games with Saturday's defeat of Anaheim. Jordin Tootoo had a goal and an assist to help Nashville down the visiting Ducks, 4-2. Alexander Radulov, Ryan Suter and Jerred Smithson also scored for Nashville, which avoided a third straight loss. Vernon Fiddler collected two helpers, and Chris Mason finished the game with 21 saves. The Preds, who are 8-4-1 in the Music City this year, are playing the third test of a four-game homestand tonight. They will wrap up the residency with Thursday's test against Colorado. Detroit is 8-4-2 as the road club this year and will begin a four-game homestand after tonight's contest. The Red Wings and Predators have split a pair of meetings this season, but Detroit has taken six of the last eight encounters overall. However, the Red Wings have dropped four of their previous six tests in Nashville. Here's to more of this! Edited due to BBCode Boo Boo

Just some quicj additions here to this thread. I watched Huds come up in GR and always knew that he had the potential to tear things up at this level. It took some action by Babs this offseason to get Draper and he together to work on his skating and it has worked wonders for him. I try not to get attached to a lot of the members of this team, especially in the fluid roster moves that have become commonplace since the new CBA, but this is one guy that I hope stays a Wing for a very long time. I love his reactions when he scores or assists. No one is happier than he is to see the puck in the net. A couple quotes from the Det News: Looks like Babs is coming around and giving the kid more ice time. 4 2-point performances and one 3-point game this season. Find me someone else in the league that is doing this that we may be able to get for him in trade that is his age and will work for peanuts.

Perhaps Elias is being shopped around for a trade? I know Phoenix is looking for some scoring punch- not to mention some veteran presence to help the youngsters.

Osgood in net for Phoenix; Hasek in net for Montreal

Hasek looked good and solid tonight. Didn't face many shots, but he got the job done. I'm not saying that he is back on track, but he has definitely found his way out of the woods and can see the path. -
Oh my eyes! Cheli in tight polyester pants!

Actually it would be 2 losses to zero. Just something else to think about. -

If Dom did as good a job of controlling his rebounds (like Ozzie does) he wouldn't face as many shots on net. They can only play in front of him as well as he allows them to play in front of them. When he isn't controlling his rebounds they are forced to face the net more often than face the opposition. Even that small change of focus can alter the way a defense plays. This year with Ozzie in net, they haven't had to worry as much about covering huge rebounds. The same can't be said for when Dom is in net. -

Hasek has not proven himself this season. Sometimes you have to remove the blinders and admit that he isn't playing like he used to. This doesn't mean he can't come back from it, just that with the way he is playing right now, Hasek is not number a number 1 goalie. Not to jum down your throat, but did you miss somehow 1997-1998, when Ozzy was the #1 goalie for the Wings and they won the Stanley Cup? He has proven himself over and over again at being capable of holding and excelling in the number one role. When Dom proves that he can play well, not let in 16% of the shots he faces, and not lose 50% of his starts he will have earned the starting job back from Ozzy. -

Why, he definitely COULD be twice the goalie Ozzie is, but the question is WILL he? Having just turned 38 recently, even though I am not a top athlete by any stretch, I can definitely attest to the fact that as you age you don't move so good anymore. You can make up for a lot of this lack of movement by using your head to a greater degree, but eventually the head may be willing, but the body ain't able. I am not saying that this is the case for Dom, but I am starting to wonder. Lest we forget, Ozzie was the Stanley Cup goaltender in '98. He is perfectly capable of "handling it." he has won the same number of Stanley Cups as Dom as the number one goalie. Osgood leads the league in GAA right now and is tied for third for victories. Now is not the time to be saying that Hasek should be getting playing time because he is our number one goalie. He has the talent to re-attain that status, but our number one goalie for the time being, is Ozzie. Hasek must earn that status again. Now is the time to be supporting our number one goalie, Osgood, and realizing that he is not a spring chicken either, so Dom will definitely get the playing time to prove that he has his game in order. You don't get playing time by playing crappy in Babcock's system, and Dom has been for lack of a better term, crappy.

I need to stop posting before I have read the whole thread. (Insert left-leg sprain good if manual transmission overdone line here.)

Well if you go by your justification then we should never have let Lang go (he once led the league in scoring), should not be hating on Hasek currently (he has won multiple Vezina awards), and there is no reason to be angry at George Bush (he once had an original idea). Going by a person's past performance can be very misleading. The same is true for stocks and mutual finds; this is why you get a disclaimer for any fund that says "past performance should not be used as an indicator for future performance." While it may give you an idea of what he is capable of (or at least what he was capable of), it certainly gives you no indication of what he can do anymore. I love when Downey is on the ice, my eyes seem to follow him around just to see what will happen next around him. This happens to members of the opposing team, too. This is why he is so valuable to this team. He draws the attention from the goons and allows the skill guys to be skill guys. Waive Drake.

The worst thing about this mistake is that I knew it was wrong and I still submitted it. You may revoke my priviledges, spelling cop.

Flip is doing just fine right where he is. Kopay, in no way deserves second line time (not at this point and not over Flip). I like the Hudler-Flip-Sammy line as Flip likes to pass, Sammy shoots (LOTS), and Hudler is willing to do whatever it takes. Remove any of the three and you are missing something. Keep all three of them on the line and the only thing you are lacking is a North American player that can make the Euro-bashers stfu.

Why do you think that hitting 30 goals would be a surprise for Homer? In 05-06 he had 30 and in 06-07 he scored 29. Its not like he has never done it before. Its not Kopecky we're talking about here, its Homer. No, he won't score 45 goals this season, but wouldn't it be cool if he did? More likely he will get in the neighborhood of 30 goals and continue to be a thorn in the side (and flatulence in the face) of goaltenders throughout the NHL.

Happy is 4th on the team in goals scored (tied with Drapes with 5) and 16th on the team ATOI. His shooting percentage is 3rd on the team. He has scored 2 really good shoot-out goals. 1/4 of the way through the season he is on a pace for 21 goals and 21 assists. I know he's a Euro and I understand he doesn't fight, but why all the hate for Jiri? He is nothing but happy to be here and he works hard through the limited amount of ice time he gets. In my mind that earns respect from the fans, not the derisive attitude displayed here by many posters.

I think that they are trying to promote the team members more and more now. I have seen specials on Hank and Pasha in the last 2 weeks on FSN and can't even begin to believe that they are done with those. With the personnel changes over the last 3 years the Wings have lost a bit of the identity and need to work hard to reestablish it with the new lineup they have. It will take time, but as long as they produce some good pieces on the players so people get to know them better I think that the people will want to go see them play.

This has to be the most maddeningly even rendition of the NHL that I have ever seen. Any team can beat any team on any night. 1 right on Friday and Saturday night sucked as well. Here's hoping that I at least get one right tonight and its the only one I care about.

Personally, when it comes to the name of the CHicago Blackhawks, I really see it as a tribute to the native Americans of the Illinois area. Chief Blackhawk was a Sauk warrior that fought in the War of 1812 on the side of the British because he was against the ceding of native lands in favor of European settlers. During the War, he was granted the rank of brevet Brigadier General in the Royal Army, and fought in several engagements in the area of the Great Lakes. In 1832 was fought the Black Hawk War, which was a war to try and regain their tribal lands across the Mississippi in Iowa. The warrior spirit that was displayed by Blackhawk and his followers is one that the Chicago Blackhawks want and need to emulate in order to succeed. It is an honorable name, and has no place being compared with Chief Wahoo. You can find more information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hawk_%28chief%29
