CCHA Hockey Discussion

I figured most people on the board, if they follow college hockey are probably a fan of a CCHA team. Here's my thoughts on the season so far.

The Good

Michigan State. Despite having an extremely tough opening schedule, road games at Michigan and Cornell and North Dakota at a neutral site; and suffering a ton of injuries, the Spartans having anywhere from 5 to 8 scholarship players out, the Spartans have a 4-1-1 record. That includes a shutout of North Dakota, tying Michigan, and splitting a series with Cornell. Comley may have gotten his s**t together.

Alaska-Fairbanks. The Nanooks are sitting at 4-2-1 and have wins against Michigan and Minnesota. This is a dangerous team, but their real test doesn't come until January when they travel down here to play Michigan then Michigan State on consecutive weekends.

Michigan. Despite losing Tamberlini who was a badass, and Montoya who wasn't anythign special last year, the Wolverines are still looking good. There have been some cracks in the armor though. Losing to UAF and giving up a game tying goal to MSU with less than a minute left. But, they did beat Boston College and are looking good.

The Bad

Notre Dame. The new coach isn't going to make that much of a difference really.

The Ugly

Ohio State. Last week the Buckeyes were sitting pretty at number 4 in the country and had what should have been an easy series against Western. Instead, the Broncos swept the Buckeyes. The problems continue for Ohio State, losing last night to Miami. Not a good start for a team that many picked to win the CCHA.

The Spartans swept the Pussycats last night for the first time in 4 seasons, winning 5-0. Vicari got his second shutout of the season and 14th of his career. He's got a chance to catch Ryan Miller's NCAA shutout record.

The problems for Ohio State continue, getting swept by Miami this weekend. The Redhawks outscored the Buckeyes 7-2 in both games. Ouch!

Considering the Buckeyes were preseason picks to win the CCHA, things aren't looking good at all.

And check out Miami. 4-0-0 CCHA record so far. Pretty impressive but I expect them to fade.

At least one MSU team is playing well. The sweep helped cheer me up after the football team dumped that game against Purdue.

That's for sure. God that game was painful to watch.

On Inside College Hockey.com the Spartans moved up to #3. I'm guessing on USCHO they'll move to at least #5.

The Spartans are playing Ferris in Big Rapids on Tuesday. I want to drive out there for the game but I have a feeling I won't be able to because of school.

The Spartans and Bulldogs tied. Neither team deserved to win. I don't think either team hit two straight passes all night. It was just an all around ugly game. The Spartans probably come out ahead since they pick up the point on the road.

Yeah, I heard it was a pretty ugly game. I actually wanted to go up to the game, and I got stuck in a meeting.

Two against Nebraska-Omaha this weekend, the Ohio State next Tuesday. Four games in a week, that's rough.

Ugh. Just when I think Comley has the Spartans going in the right direction, they go on a 3 game winless streak. Dropping two at home to Nebraska Omaha is inexcusable. I'm beginning to doubt Comley is the right man for the job.

I think this week is a big test to see whether the Spartans are for real, or if they were just overacheiving. We've got the slumping Buckeyes in Columbus, then a home and home against the inconsistent, but dangerous Broncos. EL on Friday, KZoo on Saturday.

Anything else than 4 points should be considered a failure.
