bradman349 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2006 I was reading on Red Wings Central about our prospects and was pretty impressed when I ran across Matt Ellis. Living in Florida I rarely have the chance to see the Wings play, let alone the Griffins, but I was wondering if he lived up to the 'elite two-way forward' that he is described as? And if he is such a good two-way forward why have him behind Filppula, Hudler, Kopecky, and Bootland in the call-up order. I understand, with the exception of Bootlander, they are prospected to be able to hold their own offensively, but after last night I dont think we have much of a problem scoring. Just a though..............
RyanBarnes! 293 Report post Posted October 12, 2006 Sadly I think Ellis will be lost in the depth chart. He's good at what he does, but not good enough to really make a name for himself or compete with the younger prospects.
Seth 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2006 (edited) ya pretty much what Barnesy said..the good news is in GR he's at least playing loads and gettin paid pretty good. And they gave him the C which is well deserved. I really kinda wish the Wings could give him a spot though. Damn Hudler hehehe. skacore 2 Report post Posted October 22, 2006 Matt Ellis has been an overachiever all of his hockey career, he started out in the ECHL and a couple years later he's a top notch AHL player.. It's really frustrating to see that he was hardly given any ice time during the preseason, but I guess he didn't prove a whole lot with the ice he was given.. Unfortunately, in my opinion it will take a big jump in Matt's game for him to become a favourite in the Wings' depth chart, he's definately a solid two way player but until he adapts to a real hard hitter, or starts scrapping a little more often, he will just be looked at as a franchise AHL player
Icer 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2006 Don't count Ellis out yet. He was not considered any kind of prospect when he came out of majors. He wasn't even drafted. But he worked really hard at Toledo and impresed the coaches so much they sent him to the Griffins. His first year here wasn't much but he elevated his game again and had very good numbers the past two seasons. If he keeps working this hard, I don't see how some NHL team isn't going to give him a shot sooner or later. No one's ever going to confuse him with Sidney Crosby but he's a solid 2-way forward.
