rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted April 26, 2007 annnnnd, here come the excuses. Right on cue. You got spanked by an 8th seeded expansion team with only one 30 goal scorer. Oh, and Irbe was in his first playoffs too. But then most Wings fans conveniently forget that little tidbit... I'll feed the bear. Regardless of what happen in 94, Detroit have won 3 cups and have made 1 cup final appearence, 1 western final appearence, and have not missed the playoffs. And San Jose have done what? *waits patinetly for bear to eat and then say something stupid.
Samadelphia 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2007 Over the long run Yes, Ozzie did bcome a MUCH BETTER goalie. That is exactly what I am talking about Even with that loss on his resume... I would take Ozzie overall career over that of a player who neverwas. Irbe had a fine career, including putting the Canes on his shoulders a few years ago for another improbable playoff run. To be honest, all things being equal, I'd probably take Irbe over Osgood in their primes. Osgood did not win the cup for the Wings. He was more or less along for the ride on a freight train that couldn't be stopped. Irbe wins the cup too if he's on that team... I'll feed the bear. San Jose has gone through the usual growing pains of an expansion franchise to become a model franchise that other teams are emulating. Not to mention being as good a bet as any to win the cup in their 16th year. But then if you really feel the need to compare your success to a franchise that wasn't even around in 1990, then be my guest. Whatever gets your rocks off... No one goes along for the ride against a hot Yotes team with JR and Tkachuk in their primes, Pronger and MacInnis, then the #1 ranked Dallas with Belfour on fire, and then Kolzig who was arguably the best goalies from that entire season and playoffs. Anaheim and Florida have both made it to the finals. Ottawa have been one of the better teams in the league during this period. And you say San Jose are the "model" franchise.? Wings_Fan_In_Exile 3 Report post Posted April 26, 2007 (edited) I'd have to agree with you. I played hockey with some guy who was supposedly on the "inside" with the Wings and he said that Yzerman and Shanahan were the biggest dickheads on the team, everybody hated them. I don't think that he was lying, because he wasn't bragging about it or anything it just kind of came up during a conversation. I find that extremely hard to believe. I know a few people who met him and said he was a class act. I've read a lot of first hand accounts from Maltby, Draper, Shanahan, Chelios, Osgood, Williams, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Robitaille, ect where they have nothing but good things to say. Just about anybody in the press has nothing but good experience talking with him. Yzerman's reputation as a good guy has always been undisputed as far as I've ever heard. Not sure how reliable "some guy who was supposedly on the inside" is. Anyway, off topic. Go WIngs! Edited April 26, 2007 by Wings_Fan_In_Exile
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted April 26, 2007 Couldn't agree more. Having them make the Finals will be the worst thing that could happen. Hey, at least I'd be able to get cheap playoff tickets out here without any fear of them selling out.
superstarsingh 23 Report post Posted April 26, 2007 Irbe had a fine career, including putting the Canes on his shoulders a few years ago for another improbable playoff run. And he lost to what team? I dont think Irbe could say "I have won over 300 games as a starting goalie in the NHL" Chris Osgood on the other hand, he can say that.
