Perhaps a silly question...

Did anyone else read this, and if so, what was the point? How was it a 'slip-up'? Was that not supposed to be said? Are the wings eyeing him? I just don't quite get it.

Stevie didn't mean he will play FOR Detroit. HE meant that Toews is good enough to play for Detroit. Skill wise. He is a Blackhawk though. And I am jealous. Toews looks like a very good player from what I saw at the World Championship.

Then why a 'slip-up'? I feel like that is a pretty legit thing to say....

I think Tallon took it as a slip up when Wirtz asked "did you tell them what Yzerman said? He could play for Detroit." If Tallon doesn't state the blatantly obvious then there is no thought of a slip up. I think Tallon is just trying to look smart or something. I don't know. It's pretty clear to me. Yzerman complimented Toews and said he is good enough right now to play for Detroit. But in no way meant that he be playing FOR Detroit. He can't. He's Hawks property. Tallon is genius. "Well he plays for Chicago." Thanks Dale. Good work Dale. Get me a sandwich Dale.

It depends. If Wirtz was replying to emphasize that he's Detroit-caliber, then that's right.

It sounds more like he was contesting Tallon instead, but who knows, it's an article.

"Yzerman said he was as good as any player he had," Tallon said.

"He said he could play for Detroit," Wirtz said.

Oh yeah, I can see that for sure. That helps a little bit. Because Yzerman saying he was as good as any player he had, implies that he is just as good as our best players, but Wirtz correction implies that he could crack the Red Wings lineup. This makes sense, but the so called 'correction' of, "Well, he's going to be playing for the blackhawks." Still is a little bit confusing.

Maybe Yzerman was trying to subtly say, "You're not just playing in the big leagues because Chicago is such a garbage team. You're good enough to be playing on a legit team like the Red Wings."

Yeah that's what I thought when I first read it.

I know nothing about Toews and how he'd receive it, but that's the subtext I got too: that head nod to the kid breaking into a bad club, if he needs the vote of confidence.

It's definitely a classy gesture. Maybe the article left out the rest where Wirtz is offended and rants at Tallon about how "JONATHON IS GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY ON THE BLACKHAWKS, we really are great folks.... you'll see"
