Not exactly true. It depends on what site you use. I thought they were supposed to have around $4.3 mil, but all of these sites differ.

In all seriousness; Hossa isn't gonna re-sign with the Thrashers, & will become a UFA on July 1st 2008...Would look good in a Wings uni.

True - very true - however Hank will have 1 year left under contract after this year (last season under contract is 2008/2009 season)...I'm certain Hossa will command roughly Dats level of salary (as will Hank) which will equate to $6.75 to $7.5 miilion per season (maybe more), but Hossa would certainly fit the bill as to what the Wings need.

As for Nick - I'm really hoping he'll take another "Hometown Discount", & won't ask for anything more than $5 million (hopefully less ) thus realising a need for some extra cap space for a top-flight winger.

It doesn't work that way. Even if Lids agreed to take a major hometown discount to give the Wings an edge on the salary cap, the NHLPA wouldn't allow Lids to make that little. IMO, the best deal they could hope for would be something along the lines of $6.5 - $6.75 per for 2 years. Even that is a stretch.

Lids is worth every dime of the 20% max and the NHLPA knows it. The only thing working in the Wings favor (as far as cap number goes) is his age.

The NHL does. It's the same reason the league has to approve all trades at the deadline? To make sure things are fairly handled.

The only stipulations on salaries are the minimum and maximum. Beyond that, no one has any say in what a player can sign for.

Take a look at what Mario did way back when. He took HUGE discounts to stay a Pen. That isn't to say the NHLPA wouldn't place a lot of pressure on Lidstrom to take what he is "worth". The NHL approves trades to make sure they meet all guidelines. It has nothing to do with how fair a trade may be. If the Wings wanted to trade Dats and Z to San Jose for J.R. there is nothing the NHL could do to stop them.

EDIT: Also, the Wings cap would fluctuate depending on who they have called up, but not nearly the $2mil that has been suggested. Remember though, any potential UFA the Wings were to acquire this season can still walk at seasons end. Or Kenny could simply not offer a contract. By no means does an acquisition require Kenny to re-sign said player.

If Lidstrom thinks $5 million is alright, there's no way the NHLPA is going to disallow from signing a contract for $5 million. Look at what Brodeur and Sakic are making.
