Guest mindfly Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Val will sign a cheap one-year deal. He will get his money next year. Simple. True, but let's say hossa gets a 50goal, 100pts season... if i were ken holland i wouldnt want him to leave..
jawbreaker 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 True, but let's say hossa gets a 50goal, 100pts season... if i were ken holland i wouldnt want him to leave.. Then Franzen, or Val will get their money from some other club. It's obvious that we can't keep Z, Hossa, Mule, Val. My guess, if Hossa stays, then Franzen is gone. He can have a great season, and we will not be able to pay him near 5M per year. If Franzen will have another 40-50pts season, then we keep Flip, 'cause he is a lot younger than Mule. whitey 4 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 True, but let's say hossa gets a 50goal, 100pts season... if i were ken holland i wouldnt want him to leave.. That would be a good problem to have. It would likely mean another cup in D town, and time to sort things out next year. Simply speculating, I would expect a trade of signed players for draft picks and/or prospects to make room. Again, that all depends on how other players in contract years play this year. It also depends on the cap for next year. The brilliance of the signing of Hossa is that it buys flexibility to react to the teams performance, that of individual players, and the market.
Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I know some might still hate the thought, but I'd love it if Kenny still found a way to get Bertuzzi on this roster: Bertuzzi-Datsyuk-Hossa Franzen-Zetterberg-Homer Hudler-Filpulla-Cleary Malbty/Sammy-Helm-Drapes Lots of toughness and scoring. Agreed. I woudlnt mind him as a depth player. Would give us increidlbe flexibility. Since we only have about 4 mil in cap space now, if some Lowe-like crazy person offers Flip 5 mil+, he's gone. Flip has to sign it, and he has already stated he is happy with detroit. If someone does offer him 5 million we woudlnt match, even if we did have the cap room. A 1st and a Second would be more than enough compensation for a 35 point player
Yzermania 156 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 you guys have to bring into consideration as well, if Hossa LOVES playing here, and if we perhaps win the cup again, he may take a long term deal with a pretty good discount so he can stay and also help keep the team together. It's not impossible to have Z, Mule, Hossa and Flip 2 seasons from now...especially if the cap continues to rise.

Also, Holland said on the radio, that he would try to get the guys to buy into the team concept and try to keep it together.

I'm not sure we would match $5M anyway but we could do it. You can be 10% over the cap during the summer.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 4 mil for Flip Dmac and Downey? Bad bad bad bad bad... Filpulla would be crazy to turn down this opportunity. I bet he'll sign a short-term contract. He's got to expect his production to skyrocket this season, thus increasing his value. So he'll take less money this season and stay, but after his numbers go up, watch for him to make demands in the next season or two.

If Hossa wins the Cup this year with us, look for him to look for big bucks, long-term. I don't want to call him a prima-donna, but he knows what he's worth and has no emotional connection to the Wings. Z and Franzen on the other hand, owe their entire careers on Ken Holland, and would be more likely to take hits for the team, I think.

I don't know, I am not disagreeing with you you exactly, I'm just not sure. I would have never imagined that Hossa would take what he did this year with all of the other offers that he had. He may just be one and done but I'm not sure what he will want in the future but it seems pretty obvious that money is not the absolute most important thing or he would be on a different team (that may change if he wins the Cup this year) and because of that it makes it hard to predict what he might do. jawbreaker 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Hank will get his money. Hossa might take a slight discount. But you have to consider, that Johan Franzen have never had a big payday. If some Edmonton throws him big bucks, then I won't be blaming him, if he will decide to leave.
