Correct me if im wrong but he's suppose to go #1 next year ahead of Tavares, no!?

Your not trying to imply Vancouver is going to suck that bad next year are you?

you'd honestly have to be crazy to take Hedman over Tavares

Tavares is bored in the ohl, yet his numbers are still ridiculous

Hedman had a good year last year

50/50... it depends on what the team whose got the 1st overall pic needs a defenseman or forward... tavares could be 1st or 2nd

Some people seem to have the wrong impression on how an offer sheet is signed.

It's not, "Hello, here's a five-year, $20-million offer sheet, are you gonna sign it or not?"

They can negotiate, just like if Filppula were unrestricted. It's not really an offer sheet until he signs it.

he has to sign it or sit out if Detroit doesn't match

I can't see Filp taking the money and running. They need to get him under contract for around $2 million. He hasn't proven himself beyond that figure.

have to agree, even their captain wanted out of there, their "d" is suspect at best and thier top 2 scores were make our 3rd line....maybe....b4 the hossa pickup. Luongo is crazy good but so are a lot of goalies in the western conference; I just can not see the canucks doing any better then last year i actually see them doing worse

...this is what's gonna happen, I am looking into my crystal ball...

...Vancouver signs Filpulla to a $4MM offer sheet, Detroit doesn't match and receives Vancouver's 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks for 2009. Fast forward to March 2009, Vancouver is a bottom feeder, it is looking more and more like they are gonna be in the lottery with a good amount of balls to represent the Tavares draft. Trade deadline, Detroit owns Vancover's #1 pick, they trade that pick & Jimmy Howard to Vancouver for Roberto Luongo. Detroit in turn wins back to back Championships, Vancouver doesn't get the #1 pick, but they still have Filpulla at $4MM and Jimmy Howard... Oh, they do get a great pick in the draft by the way and we get our #1, plus 2 #2's and 2 #3's for Kenny and company to find more low round talent!!!! Yee Haw!!!

...now that's a scenario worth letting Filpulla go!

Huh, he doesn't have to sign or sit out? What are you trying to suggest? That Flip will sit out rather than sign an offer sheet from another club?

He either signs the offer sheet or continues to negotiate with his current club. The moment he signs anything, negotiations are over. The Wings match or they don't match

Has to sign what? The offer sheet? The offer sheet isn't an offer sheet until it's signed.

yes but he cannot not sign it and still play- he either signs and sees if there's a match or he doesn't and sits the year out

I'm not suggesting it, I'm saying that he has basically no choice but to sign it

He does have a choice. He can continue to negotiate with his current club, and any other club for that matter, until he signs an offer sheet or a contract with the Wings. He can talk to any team he likes, anytime from the draft on.

I don't understand how they'd fit Luongo's $7 million contrct and remain within the cap, but you can dream I guess.

...yeah, it's a dream, but for the end of the season, they wouldn't have to pay him $7MM. But hey, what are the odds Detroit will get the #1 pick anyhow? Exactly!

...speaking of which, it would be a Kenny Holland move to NOT take Tavares #1 and take Hedman instead!

What are you saying? If he doesn't sign an offer sheet submitted by team "X", he has to sit the year out? That's ridiculous.

Well Tavares would be on an entry level contract, so he's no problem for the first 3 years. Them he becomes a restricted free agent and you go through the same scenario of someone presenting him an offer sheet and you collect all the picks again.

It's perfect, however unlikely.

also lol at anyone who thinks we could keep Z, Dats, Tavares and Hossa together and maintain a respectable defensive corps

...it'll never happen! That is why if Detroit drew that pick somehow, they would have offers up the ying-yang for Tavares or the #1 or if Kenny wanted to keep Tavares, he would have to trade Zetterberg or Datsyuk! Imagine the offers for them? Of course with the cap, they'd have to offer them picks I suppose because anyone who would be worth trading the #1 for probably already makes league maximum!

...any news on Sakic? Is he retiring?
