sixer 37 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 (edited) The Star Kevin McGran SPORTS REPORTER The Toronto Maple Leafs are moving closer to signing Swedish defenceman Jonas Frogren, a mainstay of the Tre Konor national team. "It hasn't happened yet, but it will happen," one insider close to the deal told thestar.com today. Frogen, a 6-1, 200-pound stay-at-home defenceman negotatiated his release from Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League. He told the Swedish newspaper, Aftonbladet, that he would soon sign with the Maple Leafs. "I'm pleased to pursue my dream," said Frogren. Based on comments made to Aftonbladet by Färjestads president Thomas Rundqvist,, it appears the Maple Leafs will pay the Swedish club at least $200,000 U.S. for Frogren. "We have never stopped a player who wanted to become an NHL professional, and when we could (we try to) find a solution with Jonas and his agent became (so) all the parties are satisfied," said Runddqvist. "We have always fought to get paid market value — and more — than the old agreement and that we have received." Under the terms of the old NHL transfer agreement with the International Ice Hockey Federation, NHL clubs paid $200,000 for a player. There is no transfer agreement in place any more. Teams simply now have a handshake agreement not to poach a player under contract. Frogren, 27, has played nine seasons with Farjestads. Frogren is expected to make the Leafs, giving the team nine bluliners under contract: Tomas Kaberle, Pavel Kubina, Bryan McCabe, Anton Stralman, Jeff Finger, Staffan Kronwall, Carlo Colaiacovo, Ian White and Frogren. Rookie prospect Luke Schenn, the Leafs' No. 1 pick in the draft last month, is also expected to have a shot at making the team. GM Cliff Fletcher is quietly hoping to convince McCabe to waive his no-movement contract. He may well be entertaining offers for Kubina, who's no-trade clause is null until Aug. 15. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 Apparently they found this guy when scouting Brunnstrom. Anyways, they expect him to be on the NHL roster, further making sure that there's no room for Bryan McCabe.
Yak19 303 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 (edited) apparently if McCabe doesnt waive the no trade clause they will ruin his career making him the 7th-D man if he doesnt perform to his salary i like this move by the leafs, we play them early in the season its the first hockey night in Canada of the season, should be good. Guest mindfly Report post Posted July 5, 2008 (edited) He's probably more of a 7-8th D guy, he really isn't that good... his specialty is in boxplay, bit of a lilja guy but even worse(!) Leaf top4 McCabe, Kaberle, Kubina, Finger.. Coliacovo, Strålman, White, Frögren och Staffan Kronwall must fight for the other 2-3spots.. Yak19 303 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 dont know much about the new guy but Coliaccovo is a good offensive minded D-man i like his play i think he will be in the mix as well as Stralman liked what i saw from him last season
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 (edited) I'm pretty excited for Stralman this year. It took him 3/4's of the season to really find his confidence at the NHL level, but he was really solid near the end of the season. He's so smooth with the puck and has great moves going end-to-end. Colaiacovo could be really good if he wasn't cursed. White's pretty 'meh', wouldn't be surprised to see him moved, just to make room. But obviously, McCabe is the target. They want him gone in the worst way. He's probably more of a 7-8th D guy, he really isn't that good... his specialty is in boxplay, bit of a lilja guy but even worse(!) I think that's all they got him for, just to be a decent 7th defenceman. Edited July 5, 2008 by MacK_Attack
12Newf 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 this guy will never play. jeff finger is going to be a total superstar and andy wosniewski is going to step up as a 20 goal scorer. ian white just looks like a gremlin but the guy takes tae bo in the offseason and can kick some serious ass. mccabe will be an allstar so there is just no need for this jurgen furgen character.
