What happens if the Wings are over the cap 10/9?

Soooooo.... what exactly happens if the Wings are over the Cap when the season begins? What are the penalties? I personally think we will dump a few players at training camp (which I don't want to see). Can some please clear this up for me. Thanks

I actually read the CBA dealing with the salary TODAY trying to find any sort of penalty explanations or anything like that, but couldn't find anything specific.

The CBA does state that the team MUST be under the cap by the final day of training camp - but we all knew that already. There was no mention of a fine or anything else that would be levied against the time should they not comply, but I got the feeling that it's just a RULE - like it is that you can't play with a rocket launcher. It doesn't explicitly say you CAN'T use a rocket launcher...you just can't.

I assume that when you submit the payroll to the accountant on that day (per the CBA), they have to sign off on it or you have to make changes.

They do have a clause in place that states the NHL will overturn any transaction (signing, trade, etc -- including voiding contracts signed that would put a team over a cap) DURING the season, but this 10% over during training camp is a unique situation. My gut tells me it's just something that all teams agreed to and you'll never encounter a situation where someone's trying to play it out.

If there was a loophole, it would have been found by somebody. I'm looking at you, Brian Burke...

Any team in violation of the salary cap - ceiling or floor - must forfeit all games... gm's arent that stupid though and will put players on waivers or make trades before that happens... if they didnt, im sure they would be out of a job pretty quick

Gary Bettman was once asked this question on the radio and he said that if a team refused to get under the cap ceiling or get above the cap floor, then the NHL would take over operations of the team and would make the necessary moves to get said team in compliance.

He never said anything about forfeiting games because he said it would never get that far.

forgive me, i dont recall the source but i am certain i heard the forfeiting thing from a very credible source earlier this summer.... perhaps TSN, but i thought it was bettman

either way it seems like an unlikely scenario... who is going to refuse to comply when the rest of the league is?

I wouldn't put it past Burke, who would later blame it on Lowe.

Nah, seriously, I doubt any GM or owner would be stupid enough to do that, knowing that they'd lose control of said team.

As of right now, these are the teams that are exceeding the cap and the amount by which they're exceeding it:

San Jose Sharks ($225,834)

Chicago Blackhawks ($458,856)

Philadelphia Flyers ($1,031,667)

Calgary Flames ($2,299,167)

Washington Capitals ($2,692,212)

Anaheim Ducks ($3,235,000)

everyone knows gary would either send Z, D, H and Lidstrom to pittsburgh or else wive the cap totally and bring sid to detroit so his boy could get a cup, hell might even bring in AO too just so it is not so obvious just for Sid

Yawn!

Can someone get a new joke, the only thing you left off was that Sid would whine about it until Bettman made it happen.
