On the other hand, I totally agree with your last statement: its the beginning of November, this time last year Ottawa was running away with the league, two-months later, not so much. Now regarding Todd McLellan as the new coach. Ron Wilson is a hell of a coach when it comes to handing him a rebuilding team that in theory shouldn't go anywhere. Wilson will turn a team like that into a legitimate threat. If you hand him a great team that just needs to get over the hump and win a cup, good luck. Wilson could take a moped over a mountain, but you give him a tank and he'll get it stuck in the mud. McLellan on the other hand knows how to handle a team bursting at the seems with talent and if he brought some of the Babcock School of Motivation along with him, it may be just the shot a team like San Jose needed. Time will tell what the Wings have lost when McLellan got a promotion elsewhere and McCrimmon replaced him, but for the time being I'm a lot more worried about a hungry Sharks team with McLellan at the helm than I was with a lazy Sharks team with Wilson steering the ship. In San Jose it wasn't just Marleau's fault but also Thornton's fault too and if these two (along with Cheechoo) can SHOW UP in the playoffs, then San Jose are really a threat to Detroit's hopes to repeat. soultrain 43 Report post Posted November 11, 2008 there has been many a choke years for the wings other than 03-07. you say "show up"? I hate to see what thornton does when he "shows up" because last year he had almost 100 points. Cheecho was still healing from a surgery he had the summer prior. In the playoff both players weren't completely devoid of scoring. They (joe and cheech) won't have to be powerhouses THIS playoff year. They play a different system; notice the whole team is scoring goals. They are the only other team in the west who was a shot at the cup. I hope The wings can repeat this year. I also hope that roenick signs with the sharks for one more year and they take the cup in 2010. The sharks have a respectable organization, they don't play dirty and they are a fun team to watch. What are the odds of a rookie head coach taking a team of talented perenial second round losers to the SCF? I would say not very good. Todd is a very good Assistant coach but lets be realistic here, he's never been an NHL Head coach and he is faced with the task of getting a team that has 3 years in a row underachieved to somehow get past their demons. I wouldn't bet on it.

You lost me when you said that. There are at least 4 teams that have a shot IMO. Detroit, San Jose, Dallas, and Aneheim. It's early, don't get too excited yet...
