FiOS and NHL Network/Center Ice

Rate this topic

So I moved and switched to FIOS. Started flipping through the channels and found out that the NHL Network will be on channel 87 (SD) and 587 (HD). It's in the guide along with Center Ice. :w00t2:

Does anyone know if you can get NHL network in HD in the US? I have it in standard but I want it in HD!!

Nope. Not anywhere at all. Not even in New Jersey, which is probably some Canadian province anyways.

It's in HD on Directv, but not all of the programming is in HD. The games are, but the shows (especially older footage) are not.

I've got it in Chicago on Comcast Channel 234 listed as NHLHD part of the sports entertainment package. Very little programming actually in high definition on there so far. Current NHL network game broadcasts and reruns of some recent games (last 2-3 years) are sometimes in HD and of course all Hockey Night in Canada programming is high def which looks very nice (Wings game last Sat night). As far as the "select HD games" that are supposed to be offered with CenterIce on a dedicated HD channel, I have been told they simply don't have the bandwidth in Chicago right now but it should be in place by next season (hey, thanks a lot Comcast!).

the comcast nhl center ice package for northern california sucks ass. some times it is so grainy that it looks like im watching a sega game. last nights wings and 'nucks games sounded like it had some digital distortion all over the audio.$160 and putting up with crappy audio and video is the price to see a hockey game on tv.

 wow, political discussion angst spillover

I was being sarcastic. Is it your angst spilling over?

In-*******-deed. While both satellite and cable TV suck alike, cable TV (Charter/Comcrap) here can't seem to figure out how to keep a stable picture.

Well I just moved to Chicago after living in the Bay Area and the standard def NHLCenterIce quality also sucks here. I was noticing the same audio issues (crackling in the left channel) throughout the game as well. I wish these issues were limited in scope but they appear to be nationwide on many systems.

Anybody under the Milwaukee version of time warner start complainin with them ot get NHLN HD and Center ice HD

I stopped bothering toward the end of last season and switched to DirectTV. Best decision I've made in a while.

On top of having NHLN (and in HD) I get Center Ice in HD almost every game.

Does anyone know if the new digital broadcasting requirements of 2/19/09 will have any effect on the standard def games?

It shouldn't.....how are getting games anyway? The only time you'd be able to view a game on a free network would be the NBC games. The remainder of them *would have to be* be viewed on a digital platform anyway (Versus, Center Ice, NHL Network). The only thing you would need to do if you aren't paying for programming whatsoever is make sure you have your digital converter box by 2/19/2009. That will allow you to continue watching games on NBC.

I watch on the Center Ice package, but some of the games look crappier than others - worse than the local standard def broadcasts. I was hoping that somehow the digital platform might make the transmission between the locals and Center Ice cleaner.

It won't. All the games you are currently watching on CI are already being broadcasted digitally. You have the network that is providing you with the s***ty feed to thank for that.

Like I said, DirectTV provides all games in HD that are broadcasted by the local affiliate in HD. Its quite nice.

im worried when tv stations go all digital (if they already haven't switched) the signal will look worse, especially on a hdtv. i hope in the next two-three years we will be able to have the whole package in hd. i never really cared about the picture, but after my friend gave me an hdtv and i watched a few local sharks games i found there to be a dramatic difference.

How do you think you're currently getting the games? As long as you have cable or some form of a dish you are watching digital TV. The only thing the digital transition will affect is those people that currently don't pay for cable or dish. Nothing will change otherwise.

That's interesting since you say you get the Pistons game to stretch. Is this when you're watching it on the HD channel or the standard def channel?

If you're watching it on the standard def channel you simply need to change your input settings on the direct TV box. If you are watching it on the HD feed it will automatically show the game in HD or the black bars will be brought up if the broadcast itself isn't in HD. I assume the Pistons' games you've seen so far have stretched because they are being broadcasted in HD, where as not all the Wings games are.

im watching the wings on the HD FSN and it wasnt strecthed .. the games against the nucks and i think the flamers.. so from my understanding they werent broadcasting them in HD.. how come the sound quality (its way better) changes when you watch a show thats not broadcasted in HD on a HD channel?

Are you sure you were watching the game on the HD channel (even though the game wasnt broadcasted in HD)? Again, it won't stretch if the network is broadcasting the game in HD, as you and I have said.

BTW, when you watch the *non-HD feed* does it go full screen for you? Mine didn't at first and I simply changed the DirectTV setting to stretch it. Its much more tolerable even though the quality still sucks.

That I'm not sure about, that's one of those mysteries I don't think we'll ever find out.

i hate time warner in austin...no nhl network..no nfl network......they suck.

Switch...that's what I did.

Sidenote: How ya doin' after Sunday?
