39 year old Ottawa Senators defenceman Luke Richardson was waived today by the club. Upon his clearing waivers, he will retire and become an assistant coach with the club.

Looking back, I'm sure the Leafs are satisfied with having drafted this solid, steady defenseman over that consummate slacker, Joe Sakic.

Riiight.

Blame Harold Ballard. The Leafs had told Sakic that they would draft him if he was available, but a senile old Pal Hal said at the draft table that he'd fire everybody if they didn't take a defenceman.

He was a pretty solid defensive defenseman, who was a great hitter and a pretty good fighter. I don't know what you guys are all bitching about with this post.

Yeah they passed him over for Sakic, but every team (including the Wings) has passed someone over for a better player. That's no reason to say he had a bad career.

Umm... I don't get it. Are you saying Richardson was better than Sakic? The reason its such a big deal is because the Leafs scouts and management did want Sakic but Harold Ballard vetoed it and demanded they draft a defenseman. What's no to get about this? Pretty different to all other missed opportunities in drafts.

I'm just saying that he had a good enough career that he shouldn't be only remembered now upon retirement, just for that draft day.

There have been bigger disasters on draft day than this situation.
