FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 (edited) I was listening to Sirius this morning and Bubba was referring to some drama at the Tampa game last night. There was some mention of Tocket (sp) throwing a tantrum and other such things. Did anyone watch the game? Does anyone know what happened? FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 I guess Tocchet had a reason to be mad. http://www.nhl.com/ice/recap.htm?id=2008020465 Milan Hejduk was awarded the lone goal in a shootout when Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith was penalized for throwing his stick, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Lightning 2-1 on Thursday night. Smith's stick came loose when he was making a save on Hejduk's backhander. After discussing the play for several minutes, the officials awarded the goal. "They huddled to make the decision to see if they felt the stick was thrown," NHL senior vice president of hockey operations Mike Murphy said in a phone interview from Toronto. "And if a stick is thrown, as outlined in Rule 26.4, they can award a goal and that's what they did in this case. There was a strong feeling that his stick was thrown." As Tampa Bay interim coach Rick Tocchet argued the call, some fans threw debris onto the ice. After Martin St. Louis failed to score on the Lightning's final shootout attempt, several players continued arguing with referees Tim Peel and Brian Pochmara. "I know it's a quick game and things happen fast, but there's four refs on the ice, not one," Smith said. "They have the angles covered. I made the save and then I had to drop the stick because my stick was going to come up in the air. You can't make that call at that point in the game. The save was already made. "I guess if you're winning, if you're up in the standings, those calls seem to go your way."

FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 That is crap. He definitely lost control of his stick, but I don't think he threw it. It looks like it got caught on something and jerked from his hand.

Opie 308 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 WOW, that stick traveled about 1.5 feet, that is not a throw that is more of a drop. More bad officiating!!

T-Ruff 47 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 Complete joke of a call They have every reason to be upset.... How they can make a decision like that at such a critical point in a game is beyond me....
Spinner 6 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 I'd like to see what video replay they were looking at in Toronto, sure looked like a dropped stick to me.
drwscc 212 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 I like how when they are showing St Louis talking to the official, you can hear one guy repeating Bulls*** over and over.
esteef 2,679 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 Barry Melrose would've successfully argued that call. f*** You Tampa! I love how the audio picked up the fan at about 3:00 into it repeating "Bull-s***! Bull-s*** Bull-s***!" :colorbounce: esteef
Opie 308 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 This has been a big problem across the board with sports, I think a lot of it (not this instance) is that the officials are just not in the kind of shape that the players are. I truly believe that officials in all sports at the end of the season should undergo mandatory evals. Watch replays and make a decision based on what they see. Two years of poor on ice and evals and you are out the door. My other beef is that in a lot of these sports the officials are much much older than the players, which leads to an inability (For the most part, there are always exceptions to the rule) to follow the game or be in the right spot to make the right call. Very few players play past the age of 38, how many of the refs are under the age of 38. I know the young guys are inexperienced and will make mistakes as well. But seriously I watch almost every sport I can, and in the major 4 I see more and more out of shape (especially baseball), old, and incapable officials. I don't care if you think I am an ageist, the fact of the matter is that a 60+ year old man should not be trying to run up and down the B-ball court with 19,20,21 year olds, same in Hockey. Football, the Chargers lost 2 games (hate the chargers BTW) due to horrible calls that the Refs admit they got wrong, yet the losses count. Baseball the Strike zone is so inconsistent and there are so many bang bang plays that are missed. How many times have you seen a fielder earn an out by walking a way or their body language saying "Got him" and the ump punches him out, even though he was safe. Maybe the games are just getting too fast for human officiating but what can you do about that you can't officiate with cameras. Train the officials better? Make it a year round job where they are required to skate (or run) all off season to prove they are in shape to ref. If Lids showed up to camp at 3 bills looking hungover and just couldn't play at all, the Wings would not play him, however these officials have there job, no matter what. Amen, but all the media types will just spin it as the botched calls create controversy and get people discussing the sport. It sucks, especially when they have replay and STILL f*** it up! BTW, my baseball pet peeve is THEY HARDLY EVER TOUCH THE SECOND BASE BAG ON A DOUBLE PLAY! Boooools***! I feel better. esteef

zaxx 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 You can see in the replay that following the release from Smith's hand the stick went directly down. If it was thrown it would have had some horizontal movement, but it only had a vertical motion. After the save when Smith came down he landed on the stick with his blocker and the snap against the ice shot the stick sideways. It was not thrown it was dropped, the only reason it moved away from Smith at all was due to the contact with the stick after the play. Just more BS from the gods in Toronto. I am only glad this did not happen to us.

Guest Shoreline Report post Posted December 19, 2008 (edited) I never saw what happened until now, but here's the video: Very clearly the stick is not thrown and it's lost in contact with Hejduk and AFTER the save is made. That was a terrible decision by the refs. Goals like that should not be awarded unless the intent is very clear that the goalie throws the stick. In this case, it was not. Ref was too trigger happy and decided the game. Edited December 19, 2008 by Shoreline
SDavis35 140 Report post Posted December 19, 2008 One of the officials was Tim Peel he was also officiating that game we lost to the Sharks last season because it hit the netting above the glass... Wings needed to play until the whistle, but Peel was there too.
