FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted March 26, 2009 It seems like he had a bright future until alcohol and drugs brought him down the path to commiting other crimes. Thirty-six seems too young to let a dream die. But after serving 14 years in prison for unarmed robbery, Mike Chegwidden, who might have become one of the Upper Peninsula's greatest hockey players, knows he must let one go and find another. It's an interesting read - link

seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted March 26, 2009 Cool read. That seems like an awful long time to spend in prison for what he did though.
GROwl 5 Report post Posted March 26, 2009 Mike Chegwidden, the subject of the article, wasn't a Wings draftee. Jeff Mikesch, with whom he went to high school and who was quoted in the article, was a Wings draftee. Right? Chegwidden was already 22 years old when he committed the crime. Hockey players and brothers Patrick and Jeff Mikesch grew up with Chegwidden in Hancock. "He was an amazing athlete," said Patrick, 36, now assistant hockey coach at Michigan Tech University and a former minor league professional player. "If he had stayed straight, who knows how far he would have gone?" Jeff, 33, drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 1994, said Chegwidden, even at 150 pounds, had a shot at the pros. "He was exceptionally fast with a hard, accurate shot."
FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted March 27, 2009 Good catch - I read the article twice and missed the "Jeff," both times apparently. Mike Chegwidden, the subject of the article, wasn't a Wings draftee. Jeff Mikesch, with whom he went to high school and who was quoted in the article, was a Wings draftee. Right? Chegwidden was already 22 years old when he committed the crime.
