John Tortorella suspended 1 game for game 5 antics

So the New York Rangers coach threw a water bottle at a fan. If you knew what that fan was saying to Tortorella, you might not be so quick to come down on him.

"Well, I tell ya, I know the heart of the guy and I know the thing that triggered him," Jim Schoenfeld, who replaced Tortorella as coach, said Sunday before Game 6. "It wasn't any sling they threw at him; and there were many. It's what [the fan] said about one of his players.

"And you guys, it's easy to say you got to be in control, you got to keep in check, you got to turn the other way, there are rules; but there's a certain part of your being when you're a coach, and it's just like being a parent, and there's certain things you'll put up with when people slander your kids and there's a certain line that people cross. And that's what happened with John."

My guess what the fan said: "Hey, Tortorella. Avery is undisciplined and hurting the team! You hear that?! I said he's UNDISCIPLINED! He doesn't even deserve to PLAY today! Haha!"

And, well, Torts wasn't gonna stand for someone talking like that about one of his players.

That has "excuse" written all over it. Yeah, you might get pissed if someone says something about your kid, but is your kid a sensitive 9 year old who doesn't know what the word **** means? Or is he a 20/30-something professional hockey player who gets trash talked to all throughout the game?

Spare me. Thats bulls***. Coaches don't have to protect their players because some fan in the stand was being a meanie.

There are lines you just don't cross. Some fans regardless of team are just going to be over the line stupid. I think it is retarded, but me hating it isn't going to change that fact. From what I saw over the weekend, it looked like the fan didn't do anything too out of whack or too much out of stupiditiy to warrant the response from the coach. If it is just verbal yapping from an idiot fan, that's to be expected and should either be laughed off or ignored. Hopefully nothing ever goes past that, but that happens sometimes as well unfortuantely.

Though I don't think he can hold a candle to Joey Kocur throwing a chair onto the ice when he was an assistant under Dave Lewis. Poor Joey, I guess he felt left out.
