Datsyuk-Hurt or Shut Down?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Pavel Datsyuk was the most dominating, noticeable presence on the ice in the regular season for the Wings. Up to this point in the playoffs, he has been near invisible. We all know how great he was in last year's playoffs so what gives this year? Has he been straight up owned by the opposition or is he nursing an injury that is affecting his play?

Hard to say. He definately doesn't look like his normal self.

I don't think that he's hurt - his defensive play has been fine, and he's been throwing a few checks, so I'm sure its not an injury. I just think that he's being driven out to the side. He's tried to dangle once or twice today, but he's getting through people and ending up near the boards, and passes to Hossa and he just throws a shot off. I think he's not playing the best hockey of his life, but is still playing fine - though he is being shut down offensively (prove me wrong!).

And according to Mike Milbury we now have a player called Holmgren!

Datsyuk played off and on all season with Hossa. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about...

And I watched every single game this season.. so I do.

Datsyuk scored 25 more points than the second highest player on this team(Zetterberg). He played his best hockey on a line with Franzen and Holmstrom. Zetterberg struggled all season but moreso when playing WITH Hossa and the second Datsyuk and Hossa were reunited Zetterberg started producing again.

Hossa is bringing Datsyuk's game down. Hossa is a glorified version of Samuelsson with a better shot.

This is ridiculous. The whole post, but the part in the bold should be up for post of the year. And I am by no means a Sammy hater.

I see. So Hossa is a cancer that is eating this team alive. Got it.

- Sammy gets puck, he shoots

- Hossa gets puck, he shoots

Both are decent defensively and obviously Hossa is faster but thats it. They also both throw their weight around.

Hossa is MASSIVELY overrated at this point.

Yes, thats exactly what I said. Deflect deflect deflect.

He may be the nicest guy in the world, probably rescues baby kittens in his off time but that doesn't make up for the fact that he has ZERO chemistry with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Each player has struggled with Hossa on their line.

Ok... so not only does Hossa have a better shot, as stated by you, he's also faster. Any other things you want to add to further seperate him from your initial comparison to Sammy? Just curious.

He makes six million more per season? They play a very similar style.... one is just more physically gifted.

Hossa and Samuelsson don't use their linemates well if at all. They stand around waiting for the puck to come to them while their linemates do all of the heavy lifting.

Hossa could score 30 goals on a line with Draper and Maltby, hes that kind of player. On the other hand we already have a great goalscorer (Franzen) who makes dramatically less than Hossa and plays well with Zetterberg AND Datsyuk because he knows how to use his linemates and gasp.... pass the puck.

So safe to say that the problem lies with Babcock for not finding a proper place for him. I will agree that I would much rather see him centered by Flip or playing with Hudler. I'm not prepared to say that he is bringing Datsyuk down, as you claim. If you want to focus only on point production, you have an argument. To me, Datsyuk isn't moving like I normally see him move. Up until this most recent penalty kill anyway (Hossa was out there with him, by the way). Hope he gets it going.

Datsyuk isn't "moving" like he usually does because hes not getting any good breakout passes from his linemates. Holmstrom is only a first line player if hes on a line with Datsyuk and another star forward. Hossa is busy setting up in the slot waiting for a pass to come to him through three guys. Datsyuk is effectively killing penalties 5 on 5 because hes constantly being double teamed because of Hossa floating around in the offensive zone.

Babcock is nitorious for not changing lines up until the last possbile moment. If we're trailing in this game for the majority of the game he wont put D-Z-H together until the last minute. Why not double shift our best line every once in a while?

The fact is, Hossa makes way too much to be playing on the third line. But hes a part of this team, like it or not.

The only problem I have is certain people acting as if Datsyuk is choking or not showing up when its certainly not the case. Put a guy like Leino or Helm on his line in place of Hossa and the line will look better by default.

was thinking the same thing. he looks tired, disengaged. he looks like when he gets the puck he is getting little/no support and feels like he needs to try to split two or three guys, which doesn't happen this time of year.

Samuelsson throws his weight around? How many goals did Hossa have this season?

You are an idiot. So, where in California are you from?

Sammy is one of our leading hitters... and hes a 20 goal scorer making a million dollars a season.

Hossa had 40 goals making $7.5 million.

Franzen had 34 goals making LESS than Samuelsson this season.

Franzen was obviously underpaid but even taking his new raise into account hes still making around $4 million less per year than Hossa this season.

Plus like I said above, he can actually play with both of our top two centers, unlike Hossa who needs weak linemates to play at the top of his game.

Ive got a couple more things to seperate Hossa and Sammy for you DavyMac:

1. Hossa lead the team in goals. Alot more than Sammy

2. Teams scheme to stop Hossa. Teams let Sammy shoot wristers from the boards.

3. Hossa is wanted by the team. Sammy will be let go after this season

These boards need an option to "Vote Off" some of the stupidest posts ever made while during a game. Better yet no posting should be allowed during and 3 hrs after a game.

Samuelsson will be here next season, hes too cheap to let go, unlike Hossa....

You guys do realize this isn't NHL2009 correct? Aware of the salary cap? Aware of the salary increases already given to Zetterberg and Franzen and the increase probably coming for Hudler?

This isn't 2002, every line doesn't need to have an allstar forward on it. Oh wait, im the moron... I guess I am on the only person here who recalls this team winning a cup without Hossa...

The fact is, you need guys like Samuelsson and Hudler to win. Its called team depth.

How many 100-point seasons does Datsyuk have?

What about Hossa?

How many Selke trophies does Hossa have? 0

How many will he ever be nominated for? 0

How many Stanley Cups does Hossa have? 0

Of course if we're going about things purely on points, not taking in account defense or the fact that Hossa's 100 point season came while playing in the South East division, Datsyuk has outscored Hossa since the lockout.

We're not discussing Hossa's defensive prowess (although he is one of the best in the league at it). We're discussing your allegation that he brings other players down. I realize that you're just trolling, but I'll still take the time to dismantle your arguments.

He scored 80 or more points twice as a Senator, averaged 96 in his two full seasons in Atlanta, and scored 26 points in 20 playoff games last year (including seven against the Wings).

What you've failed to realize is that Hossa's playing four or five minutes fewer PER GAME since he came to Detroit. He played a minute and a half less per game than Datsyuk this year.

Datsyuk plays 3 minutes less per game than Crosby, Malkin or Ovechkin... he still nearly scored 100 points.

Hossa is playing with two of the best passers in the league (Datsyuk and Zetterberg) and hes struggled offensively. Hes also tied with being the highest paid player on this team.

There really isn't an excuse for it.

Let me break this down for you, Davy:

If you take Hossa's 100-point season in Atlanta (21:41 ice time per game), and apply the points per minute to his ice time in Detroit (17:48 per game), he would've scored 82 points in 82 games that season. By Hossa's points per game average this year, had he played 82 games, he would've scored 79 points. That's a three point difference.

I think you're done now.
