Duhatschek: Wings will successfully re-sign Hossa

Recommended Posts

Eric Duhatschek of The Hockey News just said on TSN's That's Hockey that he expects Hossa to re-up, long-term, after the playoffs (and yes I know that it can't actually happen until a certain date for cap reasons). He claims that they had a deal in place in principle prior to the playoffs and he expects it to be of a similar structure to Franzen's.

Obviously nothing set in stone, but I tried to phrase the thread title to avoid getting people worked up over nothing.

Still....

Here's a link to the video clip.

MOD EDIT: Inserted link to video.

:P Household name for most hardcore hockey fans. He writes for The Hockey News, is the lead hockey columnist for Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail and is in the HHOF for his journalism over the last 35 years.

Wow, what a boss! Time will tell!

Yeah, Duhatschek went as far as to say anyone who plans to sign Hossa in the offseason is in for a real disappointment because he's not leaving Detroit... He sounded utterly convinced of this.

The only way I see this going down is if he takes Franzen money.

Hossa for Franzen money? Yes please.

There must be something internal to this organization, that is head and shoulders above the other organizations in the league. I know we always say cause they win, but I wonder if it is something else that drives these players to sign here for less than market value, besides the winning.

Even at Franzen money the Wings would still need at least 2 more forwards at the league minimum to even come close to the salary cap....

Oh so you mean Holmstrom, right?

That would be nice. 2.5 million for him is a little steep. 1 million is more along the lines of his value as of right now. Won't the Players Association step in and force Marian Hossa to sign a deal for more money if his deal is too low? I would be upset if I was an NHLer and guys signed below their market value.

Or Hudler, or Helm, or Leino, or Samuelsson, or...

NOT a fan of this move. I truly hope that it doesn't come to pass. Hossa's good, sure, but sacrificing monster depth for one streaky player is insane.

I think Mr Illitch sets the example. It's not the team the players like, it's the franchise.

They treat their players (Outside of the Cujo debacle) extremely well, x11ty billion if the player's career ends due to health reasons.
