RyanK 1 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 Right now on 97.1 they are talking about a subject that they're calling the elephant in the room. We're seeing Applicator, Helm, Ericcson getting some good playing time in the stanley cup finals. What they are doing it preparing the next face of this team. "In Holland We Trust", he says but the wings are going to change over the summer. They're talking about dropping 3mil on the cap resulting in a major change in our line up. Hudler, Sammy, Hossa..etc are probably gone in this scenario and we're prepping their replacements. Just something to think about.

Its annoying to know that our team has to change because of imposed financial restrictions. Imagine having to go tell huds or sammy or anyone for that matter that he cant wear the winged wheel next year. Through no fault of their own.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 While there will be changes I think if hossa walks Hudler stays. Why let him walk if Hossa does? He'll cost less than Hossa even if Hossa takes a huge paycut. But it's not just financial stuff. you can't let the young guys sit down in GR forever. As for the cap it sounds like it'll be around the same this year and drop next year. Where they will have a little more space to negotiate when Lidstroms contract is up. I think they will prepare this year knowing the cap will probably go down next year. I have to say I am more confident in going with more youth now than I ever was before. #18 the _Hoss_ 2 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 It's a ******* shame ! But the Red Wings spirit will prevail no matter what !
Casey 145 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 After the last few games, I'm more steadfast in thinking Hossa should be allowed to go. Scoring we have. Depth we have. You don't need to give up tons of depth for one more scorer.
Lovin Jiri Fischer 147 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 I'm still in favor of signing Hossa, Hudler, and Sammy for about 2 million each and then having Illitch pay them each another 4-6 million for Little Caesar's promotions
Chris L 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 (edited) End of an era? That would be when Lids retires, or when Z and Pav leave. That would be end of an era. I hardly think Hurds, Sammy and Hossa constitute an "era" (edited to get a spelling mistake) Edited June 1, 2009 by Chris L
maltbymaniac 13 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 i think holland will get the guys to go ahead and just accept minimum wage to keep this the baddest team EVER.

We've heard this topic every year for the past 5 years. Karsch and Anderson suck, are the most unoriginal show on the air, and were the ones trying to strike fear into the masses before the series. God I miss WDFN. Edited June 1, 2009 by KronwallCRUNCH
Wombat 26 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 There is no way this is an end of the era. This is the Red Wings Way... veterans lead the team and are eventually phased out for the next wave of leaders/stars. The Wings will lose a handful of players this year but they are ready to replace them from within. It happens and it won't hurt that much in terms of the product next year. Lidstrom retiring will be the only thing I think in which we can talk about "the end of the era". This string of good play by the Wings (18 straight playoff seasons) is The Lidstrom Era. I wonder (fearfully) how the team will play when he's retired.

The end of the Lidstrom era is the beginning of the Zetterberg era. We're in good hands. Or maybe we'll just skip straight to the Kindl era

Or maybe we'll just skip straight to the Kindl era It remains to be seen if the Wings can fully replace the 2nd greatest defenseman of all time. We will miss having a guy that could consistently shut down the other team (and add good offense) for almost half the game. The best chance the Wings have is if Ericsson can become 2/3 of the player that Lids has been. He'd be a consistent All-Star at that level (that's how great and unappreciated Lids has been!). Combined with other good guys on the backline, maybe that can allow the forwards (Z/Dats/Franzen) to carry the team along further.
RyanK 1 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 Yeah I hear you guys. Im just thinking about the cap dropping and what that might mean for our line up. I like how Illitch still manages to keep players on a little less pay than other teams can do. I don't know how he does it, maybe offers them houses and cars....and women.. lol

Dude would probably be a Norris finalist on any other team.

And, how will we do without Lidstrom? Probably how we did in games 4 and 5 against Chicago.
