Vladifan 680 Report post Posted April 22, 2010 Spouse just read this aloud to me. The book is of course, a spy novel by Tom Clancy, and it takes place during the Cold War. Excerpt: (The American is on the Metro in Russia) <<"Where in America do you come from?" was the next question. "New York City". "You play ice hockey in America?" "Oh, yes! I've been a fan of the New York Rangers since I was a child. I want to see the hockey here". Which was entirely truthful. The Russian skate-and-pass game was the closest thing to Mozart in the world of sports. "The embassy has good tickets, they told me today. Central Army", he added. "Bah!" the Muscovite snorted. "I am a Wings fan". The guy might just be genuine, Foley thought with surprise....>> There's more, but I don't want to bore anybody with this. Anymore than I already have. In fact, that's why I put it on here. Because I'M bored!

hooon 1,089 Report post Posted April 22, 2010 Depends on when during the Cold War it takes place. There was some good Wings teams and some reeeaally bad Wings teams during that time. Nice Wings reference! I wonder what team is referenced the most in the media. I feel like I see Wings jerseys/gear more often then most. I can think of at least 4 or 5 examples. LGW. Perry Cox from Scrubs, Tim Allen in Home Improvement, Joey in Full house. And those are just off the top of my head. I agree, I see the Winged Wheel a lot too. crotty99 302 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 Another- thanks to playing the Olympia in '76. I remember watching a McCartney concert DVD recently, he brought out that guitar to play "Yesterday". It was quite a shock to see the Wings logo on there! Wings and the Beatles, truly an unstoppable force.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) Love Tom Clancy books. I read that one when it came out but I'd totally forgotten that reference. Awesome find. EDIT: Let's not forget South Park. They had an entire episode devoted to those evil bastard Red Wings. Edited April 23, 2010 by VM1138

Vladifan 680 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) All of these references OBviously confirm our excellent taste. Especially the Paul McCartney, Dr. Cox and "Bueller's" Alan Ruck Howe jersey. I also really appreciated the line about Russian skating and passing being the closest thing to Mozart. That's the best description I've seen/heard that describes my feelings about watching the Russian Five. Oh, how I miss them.
