I think with the cap going up, Lids, Homer and most likey Bert taking cheaper contracts we'll be able to spend a bit over a million on a dman. Lilja's contract was 1.2 so we can definitely spend that much on a replacement.

That opens up quite a few more possibilites because for around 1 mill to 1.5 mill it makes bigger guys like Exelby, Boynton, and Jurcina possibilites.

If we want a cheap guy that could be a mentor for the younger D-men then someone like Hnidy or Strudwick could be pretty good options.

I really think Strudwick is a good possibility, he had a bad year on an even worst team so for the same price I'm sure he could be signed and whenever I've watched him play he hasn't seemed to bad at all. He's fairly mean as well.

In addition to the guys you mentioned,I wouldn't mind seeing O'Donnell here. He's be a great mentor for the younger guys.I don't think he would he a cap issue either, especially at his age.

Kindl will be up next season---and if Holland looks for another D-man to play the #7 role, it'll be Lilja. I don't get why people are rushing around discussing who should be signed to that role.

If we're looking at this guy saying he's going to be a fairly big hitter, why would we get a 5'10 guy when theres guys out there that will be around the same price, 6'2 and big hitters.

Definitely wouldn't be my first choice.

I don't like linking size and hitting ability too strongly. There are as many giant ******* as there are small wrecking-balls.

I don't know if we have that much wiggle room/would we want to spend it on a 1.5 mil 6th dman.

Meyer is one of the better hitting dmen in the league, and probably the most consistent one that is under 1.5 mil

If we pay Garnet Exelby $1.5 million, we're making a giant, giant mistake on so many levels it isn't even funny. He's not even gritty enough for Brian Burke and the awful, awful, horrid Toronto Maple Leafs, and Burke likes nothing BUT grit from his defencemen. Maybe throw him a training camp invite, with the intention of throwing $1 million MAX at him if he makes the team.

Meyer sounds interesting, but I'd like some consistency in both who he's paired with and his role on whatever team he's on to be able to fully judge him. He was also -19 in 2008-09 in 26 games, missing over half the year with a groin injury.

The article on Mlive saying that another free agent might be signed to play the 6th defenseman role is why we are discussing it.

I know what you mean, but I would rather have a big physical guy, then a small physical one. If both hit with the same amount of consitency give me the big one for a bit more money.

We wouldnt pay him 1.5 million but I'm saying we could potentially sign a better guy for up to 1.5 maybe.

Exelby is one of the grittier guys in the league, he had a bad season in TO and for 1 million would be a great addition here. Toronto doesn't need more grit on defense so Burke won't try to hard to sign him I don't tinhk.

I have a feeling Kindl won't pan out.Just by the way we're going after another guy after re-signing Janik.Might just be me tho.
