OTTAWA - Sen. Jacques Demers is in hospital after undergoing surgery.

A report says the former hockey coach has been bed-ridden for about a week with a stomach ailment.

Demers' office told Corus News that he is in an Ottawa hospital, where he is in stable condition and where he will be recovering for an unspecified period of time.

The 65-year-old Demers was named to Senate last year by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The longtime hockey man is a popular analyst on French-language TV and radio in Quebec.

Demers is also known for having admitted to being functionally illiterate in 2005 and then becoming a vocal advocate for literacy.

The Senate continues sitting until the end of the week.

Get well soon, coach. We all have a ton of respect for the coach who gave Yzerman the "C".
