Red Wings offer assistant Paul MacLean extension

The Red Wings have offered an extension to assistant coach Paul MacLean, but they are prepared to give him time to consider other options.

MacLean joined the Detroit coaching staff in the summer of 2005, coming over from Anaheim along with head coach Mike Babcock.

"We've offered him a contract," general manager Ken Holland said this week of MacLean. "We're prepared to sit tight for a bit. He's hoping to get an opportunity to interview with some of the head-coaching jobs available."

Dallas, Florida, Minnesota, New Jersey and Ottawa are all looking for bench bosses. MacLean, 53, interviewed last summer with Columbus, which ended up hiring Scott Arniel. Holland said no team has called to ask permission to speak with MacLean, but it's not uncommon for teams to wait until June before looking at candidates.

The Wings parted ways last week with assistant coach Brad McCrimmon, who took over when Todd McLellan left to take the head-coaching job in San Jose three years ago. They have yet to interview any replacements.

BERTUZZI UPDATE: Forward Todd Bertuzzi, who suffered a concussion in the last game of the playoffs, said he's doing better and has been able to both skate and work out. He still has to pass a baseline test before being cleared; he'll try to do that within a week or so.

as defense coach and bring someone else in as offense!!!! thumbup.gif

That's what I'd prefer, but he's good coaching the offense too and if that's where he's happy, I'd rather keep him there happy, than move him to D and make him want to look elsewhere...

Paul MacLean is an excellent coach, and I think he'd be a great head coach somewhere, having seen him during my formulative years as the bench boss of the Quad City Mallards.

That said, KENNY GIT R DONE!!!!!!

Would he still count against the Cap? ;)

I'm guessing it would for the first year, but after the initial season it'd be like burying him in Europe. I do not, however, think 30 minutes a week to discuss his next contract would be enough to re-sign him since i'm sure Edmonton will have plenty of cap space to outbid anyone for his services.
