Athanasiou got a broken jaw, couldn't eat solid food for weeks, lost almost 20 lbs., AND missed more games than Mantha. Yet he still managed to work hard every game once he returned. Being injured might excuse the results, but not the lack of effort.
I don't see why people feel the need to constantly make excuses for the Mantha. He was used to streamrolling weaker competition in Juniors, and he learned bad habits, and hasn't unlearned them yet. It doesn't doom him to a career of mediocrity, but he doesn't get a free pass from criticism because he was drafted high and people like the fact that he's big.
To date, Mantha has been soft, lazy, and moderately disappointing.
I'm pretty sure you need your legs to play hockey ? As bad as the jaw injury was you need your legs more to play hockey than your jaw ...I'm no doctor but I'm sure a leg injury could effect his your play on the ice , with a broken jaw after sometime off you put your protection and your good to go
And again don't forget mantha didn't have training camp and exhibition games so when he came back he was already not in playing shape
And he finished with a goal behind athanasiou ... Not like athanasiou blew him out of the water (nothing against athanasiou, like the kid )
Before it was mantha was just good cause he played against 17-18 yr olds and now it's he steamrolled through weaker competition in the juniors ... Well he was named one of the best players at the world junior championships against the best of the juniors , what's the excuse now?
Mantha played in the league he was in ... It was out of his control , ahl is a tougher league and he learned from it and will get better .... Why you already writing him off after a injury ridden first season?
As far as I know without checking drouin didn't light it up and he was 3rd overall and couldnt even get in the lineup during the playoffs .... What a bust
To date mantha's played 60 games ... Far to soon to be judging him ... Don't forget Tatar was in Grand Rapids for 4 years
I'm not writing him off. I'm saying he doesn't drive offense. He's like Franzen in that way. Because he's soft and doesn't enjoy working hard, other people have to create offense for him to capitalize off of. Tons of very productive guys in the NHL are like that.
But your point is taken. When 6'4, 200+ lb. guys like Mantha play against 16-18 year olds, they're super impressive.
And your point is taken ... Get a broken leg , miss training camp and a bunch of games and don't score a goal a game in a new league that's not his age group and let's all jump on the kid and say he's not that good
And nobody said mantha was gonna be a playmaker and drive offense ... Is pulkkinen gonna drive some offenses? Give me a 30+goal
Give the guy a full season to prove himself ... He's already hard at the gym training trying to bulk up not tanning and drinking beer , doesn't seem lazy to me
I believe Holland, based on his relationship with Babcock, already has a trade in place to send Mantha and our first to Toronto for Phaneuf.
Boy it sure is easy making things up. And fun too. We should both be like Cox and do this for a living.
Go for it ... You can Give eklund a run for his money
6 months ago I'd like like nooooooooooo. But with how quickly Larkin is coming along, and the emergence of guys like Little Bert, all is well if it is for the right piece. Gonna be an interesting summer for sure!
Everyone's just willing to give up on him cause he didn't score 50 goals in 50 games .... We need to see him play a full season next year before trading him off
A first and mantha for Phaneuf and his 7 million cap hit even now we'd get f***ed
I don't pay attention to anything damian cox says .... And for everyone who's thinking mantha is a bust bnd is willing to part with him should really thank twice .... Mantha came in missing camp and a bunch of games, it's wayyyyyyyyyyyy to soon to say he's a bust and be ok with trading a big man who can shoot
Yeah, NYI and St. Louis were real all star teams when he played there. Still solid numbers, first year in NYI they made the playoffs for the first time in years. Saved the Wings asses during the 2008 cup run as well, and was instrumental in them making the Finals the following year. Some people will just never give the guy the credit he deserves because he played on some great Wings teams. Oh well.
He's just not as great as you think he is ... If he played his whole career in nyi and slt he would of won nothing ... Look back at the wings lineups during those glory years ... Truly remarkable stuff , never needed a superstar goalie to win with that lineup
Now imagine if we had hasek in nets as well from 93-05 how many cups we'd have
What really gets me is how people are praising osgood so much and yet s***ting on federov and he's the one who's had the way better career in detroit , only cause he chased some money along the way
I'm really not trying to turn this into an Osgood debate, but it looks like it's already heading that way.
Using the fact that Osgood "took advantage of all-star teams" against him completely ignores the fact that guys like Fuhr, Sawchuk, Plante, and Smith ALL played for dynasty teams as well.
I don't see anybody arguing that Grant Fuhr's banner should be pulled down because he played with Messier and Gretzky.
Those guys you mentioned were also the best goalies of there time and won vezina's and conn smythe's, in nets for many cups
Brodeur roy hasek and others were miles away better than osgood
Osgood holds all the Red Wings goalie playoff records, I think if Fed's jersey get's retired, Osgood's should too.
Ya cause he played for hall of fame teams ... Hawks win the cup again and maybe a 4th you retire corey crawford a jersey in Chicago? Come on .... Ozzie looks like a good guy but he was an average goalie who was fortunate to be in the teams detroit had ... He never had to steal a series for the wings
